Grand Valley State Defeats Colorado School of Mines in NCAA D-II Quarterfinals

Denver, Colo. - Grand Valley State advanced to the national
semifinals after defeating #21 Colorado School of Mines 3-0, Sunday
(Nov. 22) afternoon in Denver, Colo. The #3 Lakers will play
Thursday, Dec. 3 in Tampa, Fla., against Saint Rose in the NCAA
Division II National Tournament.
GVSU got on the board first during the 14th minute when senior
forward Irie Dennis came down the left side and took a shot from
the far left wing of the box. Dennis scored her seventh goal of the
season when she placed it in the top right corner, giving the
Lakers the 1-0 lead.
Grand Valley State got its second goal of the half at the 39th
mark when freshman Maria Brown came down the right side and crossed
it over to freshman Ashley Botts, where she found the back of the
net, giving GVSU the 2-0 lead. Botts recorded her team-high 14th
goal of the year.
The Lakers outshot Colorado Mines by a 7-3 margin in the first
half, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
During the second half of play, freshman forward Kayla Addison
notched her 11th goal of the year when she scored at the 69:20
mark. She came down the middle of the field on a breakaway and
placed it in the lower left corner of the net, giving the Lakers
the 3-0 win.
GVSU outshot Colorado Mines by a 17-5 margin, including a 10-1
advantage on shots on goal. Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise picked up her
11th shutout victory on the year. The tough Laker defense held
Colorado Mines to only one shot on goal the entire game.
The Lakers advance their record to 20-0-4 on the year and picked
up their 14th shutout win.
