GVSU's Elsass Chosen as GLIAC Women's Soccer "Player of the Week"

Bay City, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University senior forward Ashley Elsass has been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Soccer "Player of the Week" it was announced by the league office.

Ashley Elsass - Grand Valley State University

Senior Forward Ashley Elsass scored the game-winning goal in matches against Northwood (4-0) and Saginaw Valley State (2-1, OT) this week. She paced the team with three goals and seven points on the week, as well as 10 shots and six shots on goal. Elsass is tied for the team lead with 10 assists and is second on the team with 13 goals. She has tallied four game-winning goals on the season. Elsass scored in overtime against Saginaw Valley State to keep the Lakers perfect in the regular season with one game left to play.

Ashland - Ashland dropped both of its home contests this past weekend. Tiffin came into town on Friday (Oct. 24) and won easily, 3-0. On Sunday (Oct. 26), AU hosted Findlay, which ended in an Oilers 4-1 victory. The Eagles record now sits at 7-12 overall and 4-9 in the GLIAC. Junior keeper Krista Herbst made 10 saves over the weekend. She now has 106 on the season. The total places her second all-time in single season saves at Ashland University. Only Robyn Lymangrover's 109 in 1995 are keeping her from the top spot. If Herbst collects four saves in the Eagles final match against Northern Michigan on Sunday (Nov. 2) she will set the record. Herbst earlier this season set the single match record for saves with 17 against Grand Valley State on Sept. 21.
Ferris State - Ferris State's eight overall victories this season represents the program's most since the 2005 campaign when the Bulldogs compiled an 11-7-0 overall ledger...Freshman midfielder Maegan Smith (Hickory Corners/Kalamazoo Christian) has compiled three game-winning goals this season, including in each of the Bulldogs' last two matches at Saginaw Valley State (10/24) and at Northwood (10/26). Smith has generated a combined six goals in FSU's last five matches to date with 12 total points during that period...Sophomore midfielder Megan Stec (Novi) posted her first collegiate goal with a second-half tally at Northwood (10/26) on a penalty kick. Stec's two points (1-0=2) in 15 matches this season equals her two points (0-2=2) in 17 contests a season ago...During its current three-match winning streak, Ferris State has outscored its opponent by a 9-3 differential despite being outshot by a 16.7 to 13.0 shots per match margin. FSU has attempted 39 total shots on goal during the three-match span while the opposition has generated 50 total shots.
Findlay - The Oilers split a
pair of GLIAC games last week, losing 3-2 at home to Northern
Michigan and winning 4-1 on the road at Ashland... Sophomore Amanda
Bachameyer had another stellar week for the Oilers as she scored
three goals in Findlay's two games...Bachmayer scored one goal in
the loss to Northern Michigan and then came up with two more in the
Oilers win at Ashland...Bachmayer has a team-high eight goals on
the year and is also tied for the team lead in assists with
three...Sophomore Sara Jones is second on the team with six goals
and has also tallied three assists.
Grand Valley State - The Lakers held on to the No.
1 rank in the NSCAA/adidas poll with wins over Northwood (4-0) and
Saginaw Valley State (2-1, OT)...GVSU is still undefeated with a
record of 18-0, 13-0 GLIAC...GVSU has now won 26 consecutive
conference matches (4th all-time in Div. II), dating back to Sept.
29, 2006...They have also won 37 consecutive regular season
matches...GVSU has not lost at home in a span of 39 matches (5th
all-time in Div. II) dating back to Sept. 4, 2005... Through
matches on Oct. 19, Grand Valley State is the only undefeated team
in Division II and ranks first in goals-against average (.188) and
shutout percentage (.875)...GVSU also ranks fifth in scoring
average (3.69) and seventh in save percentage (.893)... She has
recorded 11 individual shutouts, while the team has shutout 15
opponents in 18 matches...Individually, Nasturzio ranks second in
the nation in goals-against average (0.202) and seventh in save
percentage (0.893).
Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan
University women's soccer team will conclude the regular season on
the road against Ashland this week...Last week the ‘Cats went
into double overtime in both games as they defeated Findlay (3-2)
and tied Tiffin (1-1)...Against the Oilers the ‘Cats were
down 2-0 before rattling off three unanswered goals...Abigail
Debiak kicked home the game-winner at Findlay for her second goal
of the season and first game-winner of the year...NMU is now 3-2-1
in overtime games this season... The ‘Cats are 3-1-1 in the
past five games...NMU has scored seven of its 23 goals over the
past three games...Kara Music has a 0.99 goal-against average to go
along with her .822 save-percentage...The tie against Tiffin was
the ‘Cats first tie of the season.
Northwood - Northwood women's
soccer defeated Rochester and then dropped two hard fought
matches...NU won, 6-0 against Rochester and lost, 4-0 to Grand
Valley State and Ferris State...The Timberwolves travel to Saginaw
Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and host Saginaw Valley on Sunday, Nov
2, with both games starting at noon.
Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State
University women's soccer team lost both matches this week. On
Friday (Oct. 24), Ferris State started the afternoon's scoring when
Tammy Unsworth scored a goal just fifteen seconds before the half.
Saginaw Valley's Kim Oberski (Port Huron, Mich.) responded with a
goal on an assist by Stephanie Roy (Royal Oak, Mich. / Dondero HS).
Later in the game, Roy would find the back of the net on a penalty
kick to knot the score, 2-2. Ferris State would add a late goal to
seal the victory. The Cardinals lead for most of the game against
Grand Valley State, as senior Kim Oberski (Port Huron, Mich./Port
Huron HS) scored just 11 minutes into the game. In the second half,
Grand Valley got on the board at the 56 minute mark on a free kick
to end the scoring in regulation to send the match into sudden
death overtime. The Cardinals look to rebound this week as they
face Northwood University in a make-up game from earlier this
season at home on Wednesday (October 29) and the travel to
Northwood on Saturday (November 1) to round out their regular
season.
Tiffin - Deidre Abouahmed
scored 2 goals against Ashland...Shelly Rogers had a solid week,
tallying a goal against Ashland along with an assist, while also
getting the lone assist on Tiffin's goal in a 1-1 double overtime
tie against Northern Michigan...Kirsten White scored the tying goal
in the 81st minute on a header off a corner kick against the
Wildcats...Jillian McGonigal and Steffany Stoeffler also had
assists against the Eagles...Abby Grieser got a shutout against the
Eagles and allowed just one goal in 110 minutes against Northern
Michigan. She posted a 0.45 GAA for the week.
