GVSU to Host NCAA D-II Women's Soccer Midwest and Central Region Finals

Allendale, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University downed Quincy University (Ill.), 2-0, on Sunday in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region semifinals at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers earned the right to host the Midwest and Central Region finals this Friday (Nov. 21) with the winners meeting in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals on Sunday (Nov. 23).

Grand Valley State - The Lakers held on to the No. 1 rank in the NSCAA/adidas national poll and earned their fourth consecutive bid in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Final with a win over Quincy (2-0)...GVSU is still undefeated with a record of 22-0 overall, 14-0 GLIAC...GVSU has won 27 consecutive conference matches (t-3rd in Division II history) dating back to Sept. 29, 2006...GVSU has also won 38 consecutive regular season matches...The Lakers have not lost at home in a span of 43 matches (3rd all-time in Division II) dating back to Sept. 4, 2005...Through games on Nov. 9, Grand Valley State is the only team in Division II that has won every match and ranks first in shutout percentage (.857)...GVSU also ranks first in goals-against average (.19), first in save percentage (.918) and fifth in scoring offense (3.48)...The Lakers set a new Division II single-season record for shutouts with their 19th against Quincy on Sunday...Senior goalkeeper Kristina Nasturzio (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded a shutout streak of 880:01 earlier this season, which ranks fifth all-time in Division II...Nasturzio has recorded 15 individual shutouts (t-3rd in Division II history) and GVSU has shut out 19 of their 22 opponents...Grand Valley State has not allowed a goal in postseason play through three matches...Individually, Nasturzio ranks first in Division II in goals-against average (.201) and fourth in save percentage (.918)...Senior forward Katy Tafler (Mississauga, Ont.) ranks eighth in assists per game (.62), 13th in points per game (2.43) and 20th in goals per game (.905)...Earlier this season, Tafler became the first player in GLIAC history, and only the 17th in Division II history, to record at least 40 goals and 40 assists (114/41)...In Division II history, Tafler ranks third in both goals (114) and points (269)...Senior forward Ashley Elsass (Powell, Ohio) ranks 28th in both points per game (2.05) and assists per game (.52)...Junior forward Irie Dennis also ranks 28th in assists per game (.52)...Tafler leads the team with 20 goals, 13 assists and 53 points on the season.
Tiffin - Tiffin University
(13-5-2) saw its memorable season come to an end in dramatic
fashion, as TU and Quincy battled to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes
in the first round of the NCAA National Tournament at Grand Valley
State University. Quincy won the penalty kick shootout 4-3. With
the penalty kicks tied at 3-3, Tiffin's fifth shot was stopped by
Quincy's goalkeeper. Quincy made its fifth shot to end the Dragons
season. The Dragons had led 1-0 at the half, as Deidre Abouahmed
scored in the 44th minute on an 18 yard shot into the upper left
corner of the net. But Quincy answered in the 57th minute when
Becky Fleming scored. Quincy controlled the tempo throughout most
of the game's 110 minutes, outshooting the Dragons 22-7. Abby
Grieser made 8 saves in 110 minutes in goal for the Dragons.
