Three GLIAC Women's Golf Teams Earn Berths into NCAA D-II Super Region Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Committee has selected the teams and individuals that will compete in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships.  Grand Valley State University, Ashland University, and Ferris State University will each advance to the Super Region One Tournament.

Ashland - The Eagles have been invited to the NCAA Division II Super Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year. This is the second time in school history the Eagles have reached the postseason. A year ago, AU was sixth at the regional event. This year’s Super Regional will be played May 2-4 at the Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, MO.  Back on Apr. 10-11, Ashland played on that course and was second at the Drury Lady Panther Invitational…last week, the Eagles finished second at the GLIAC tournament. AU has been the conference runnerup for two consecutive years.    


Ferris State - For the ninth consecutive time, Ferris State University will be represented at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Regionals as the Bulldogs earned a postseason berth to the 2010 Super Regional One (East Region) as announced Monday (April 26) by the NCAA-II Women's Golf Committee... FSU will make its ninth straight NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance after making its debut back in the 2001-02 season with a third-place showing. To date, the Bulldogs have won a regional tourney twice (2003-04 and 2006-07) while attaining runner-up honors on four occasions (2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, and 2008-09)... Ferris State is among nine teams who will playing in the 2010 East Super Regional from May 2-4 at the Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.  Drury University will be hosting the Super Regional One Tournament. Ferris State finished the conference tournament with a third-place showing as the Bulldogs registered a two-round 628 team score (+52) in Saturday's (April 24) opening two rounds.  FSU turned in identical rounds of 314 and was 34 strokes behind 2010 GLIAC Champion Grand Valley State (594, +18)... This season's league tourney showing marks the second year in a row in which Ferris State has captured third-place honors.  The Bulldogs were third at the 2009 GLIAC Women's Golf Championships following a 69-strokes over par 645 team stroke total at Grand Valley State's The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.  Grand Valley State also claimed top team accolades at last year's conference tournament.

Findlay - Junior Andrea Vogt, a 2010 second team All-GLIAC selection, joins three other individuals and nine teams at the event with a chance to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship... The championship event will take place on May 12-15 at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona... Vogt, who finished 12th at the GLIAC Championship, was named the GLIAC Athlete of the Week on April 21 after winning the Tiffin Invitational with a two-round score of 157 and finishing third at the Ashland Invitational after carding a 161... UF finished in fifth place at the 2010 GLIAC Championship, which was hosted at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Michigan. The Oilers shot a 328 during the opening round and came back with a 313 in the second for a total of 641 on the day... Individually, Ashley Gubser (79, 76 – 155) finished in eighth place while Megan Hall (84, 75 – 159) and Andrea Vogt (82, 77 – 159) tied for 12th... Erin Craig (83, 85 – 168) and Jacqueline Sublette (86, 85 – 171) also competed for Findlay at the event. 


Grand Valley State - The Laker women travel to Springfield, Missouri for the East Region Tournament next week (May 2-4), where they will compete with eight other teams at Rivercut Golf Course, hosted by Drury. The top three schools from the super regional will advance to the Division II Women's Golf Championship in Mesa, Arizona from May 12-15... Grand Valley State women's golf team captured its third consecutive GLIAC Championship this weekend, after Sunday's (April 25) final round was cancelled due to rain and unplayable course conditions. The Lakers held a 26-stroke advantage after 36 holes of play on Saturday (April 24), as all five GVSU golfers were in the top-15 of the tournament, including the three lowest individual scores... The teams played 36 holes on Saturday, with Grand Valley State own the two lowest rounds of the day. GVSU shot a 293 in the opening round, followed by a 301 in round two for a total of 594 (+18) at Katke Golf Course. Ashland placed second with a score of 620 (+44) and Ferris State was third at 628 (+52)... Finishing as the tournament medalist and the only player to score under par was senior Ashley Smith. As the first place finisher, Smith shot a two-round total of 143 (-1) by using an opening round score of 70 (-2) and coupling that with a second round 73. Tying for second place were two GVSU golfers and one from Ashland. Senior Caitlin Bennett and sophomore Sarah Hoffman tied with AU's Annie Miles for second place with a total of 149 (+5). Bennett used rounds of 76 and 73 on Saturday, while Hoffman shot 72-77 for her tally... Also finishing in the top six scores was freshman Ashley Beard, who tied for sixth place with a 153 (+9). Beard used rounds of 75 and 78 to tie with Ashland's Erin Misheff. Placing 15th as the fifth Laker in the top-15 was junior Allie Tyler, who notched a 162 (+18) with rounds of 80 and 82... It is the seventh GLIAC Championship for Grand Valley State since the tournament's inception in 2001. GVSU has now won league titles in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2010.



Lake Superior State - Freshman Meredith Cleary (Ontonagon, Mich.) shot an 88-101—189 Saturday to place 31st, while freshman Louise Hunt (Waterford, Mich.) carded a 104-106—210 to place 33rd as LSSU competed in the GLIAC Women’s Golf Championships for the first time in school history.

 

 

 

Northwood - The Northwood University women's golf team finished fifth at the GLIAC Championships Saturday afternoon... NU shot teams scores of 342 and 327 to finish at 669 overall. Grand Valley State was the overall winner at 594 (293-301), followed by Ashland (308-312)... Leading the way for the Timberwolves was freshman Brittany Davidson (Mississauga, Ont.). She carded rounds of 83 and 78 for a total of 161, good for 14th overall. Paige Molnar (Corunna, Mich.) tied for 16th overall at 163 (82-81) to tie for 16th... At the conclusion of the tournament, the All-GLIAC teams were announced. Molnar was named Second Team All-GLIAC, while Davidson claimed Honorable Mention.


Tiffin - Tiffin University finished 7th at the GLIAC Championships played at Big Rapids, MI. Deborah Landis posted the lowest score for TU with 86, followed by Brittany Lynch's 88 and Stephanie Templeman's 89. Sara Durkee finished with 92 and Allison Soviak had 99. The Dragons shot 338 in the first round but fell off to a 355 mark in round two. The third round was canceled due to inclement weather.
