GVSU Claims 2010 GLIAC Women's Golf Championship After Final Round is Cancelled Due to Rain

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Grand Valley State University claimed the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's golf championship, hosted by Ferris State University at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. on Sunday (April 25) after the final round of the tournament was cancelled due to unplayable conditions on the course.
GVSU took the title after tallying a 293 in round one on Saturday, followed by a 301 in the second round for its total of 594. The two Laker rounds were the lowest two scores on Saturday, as they finished ahead of second-place Ashland University (620, +44) and third-place Ferris State University (628, +52). The University Findlay (641, +65) finished fourth, while Northwood University (669, +93), and Tiffin University (693, +117) finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Members of the Lake Superior State University team competed as individuals.
Earning tournament medallist honors was the only golfer under par, GVSU senior Ashley Smith, who is first with a two-round total of 143 (-1). Smith fired an opening round score of 70 (-2) and used a 73 in round two for her total. GVSU senior Caitlin Bennett and sophomore Sarah Hoffman tied for second place with a 149 (+5). Bennett shot 76-73 on Saturday, while Hoffman notched rounds of 72-77 as the Lakers own spots 1-2-3 after the opening day.
Ashland junior Annie Miles also tied for second after carding rounds of 72 and 77 (149, +5). Ferris State sophomore Erin Fuchik rounds out the top five individuals, shooting rounds of 75 and 77 (152, +8).
Grand Valley State garnered its third consecutive GLIAC Championship and seventh overall, as the Lakers have now won conference titles in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
