Ferris State’s Becky Hoffman Named 2008 GLIAC Women’s Golf “Athlete of the Year”

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Ferris State University senior Becky Hoffman was named the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's golf "Athlete of the Year". Grand Valley State University's Kristina Langton earned the "Freshman of the Year" honors while Grand Valley State's Lori Stinson was tabbed "Coach of the Year."

Hoffman (Gaines, Mich./Swartz Creek) led the Bulldogs to a runner-up team finish at the 2008 GLIAC women's golf championship. Hoffman was the tournament's individual medalist as she bested Grand Valley State's Ashley Smith by carding a birdie in the first playoff hole. Hoffman posted a 226 (74-75-77 = 226, +10) in the three rounds of competition prior to the playoff on the par 72, 5,851-yard Sycamore Springs Golf Course.The victory represented her third top-five tournament finish and eighth top 10 placing in events this campaign.

Langton (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central) finished sixth at the GLIAC championship with a 54-hole total of 233 (82-76-75 = 233, +7) and recorded seven top 10 finishes in 12 tournaments played during her freshman campaign. Langton tallied a 78.04 stroke average, this season which included a low round of 71.

Stinson led GVSU to the 2008 GLIAC championship as five Lakers finished among the top nine in the individual standings. Grand Valley State captured five tournament titles during the 2007-08 season and three golfers earned the GLIAC women's golf "Athlete of the Week" honors. Stinson has guided Grand Valley State to four GLIAC titles in the last six years and five since 2001. Stinson has now earned the GLIAC women's golf "Coach of the Year" honor four times in her career.

Joining Hoffman and Langton on the 2008 All-GLIAC First Team are: junior Alison Meyer, of Ferris State University; sophomores Caitlin Bennett and Ashley Smith of Grand Valley State; and senior Stephanie Gillette of the University of Findlay.

The All-GLIAC Second Team includes: freshman Jacqueline Benscoter and juniors Raquel Hansen and Meghan Hunter of Ferris State; freshman Annie Miles of Ashland University; and senior Tracey Puckering and freshman Allie Tyler of Grand Valley State.
