Northwood's Pam Wilson Voted Daktronics Midwest Region "Player of the Year"

Northwood’s Wilson headlines Daktronics All-Midwest Region honorees

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Northwood University senior forward Pam Wilson (Grand Blanc, Michigan) has been selected the Daktronics, Inc. Midwest Region Player of the Year for women’s basketball in a vote by the region’s sports information directors.

Wilson, a first-team North Division All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, led the GLIAC with 16.9 points per game this season. She also was second in the GLIAC with 8.8 rebounds per appearance.

Joining Wilson on the first team was Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year Ali Schwagmeyer (Camp Point, Illinois), a junior forward from Quincy University. Schwagmeyer is averaging 17.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for the Lady Hawks, who are the number two seed in this weekend’s NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament.

Michigan Tech University senior forward Lucy Dernovsek (Holcombe, Wisconsin) also earned first-team All-Midwest Region honors after leading the Huskies to the top seed in the regional tournament. Dernovsek averaged a team-best 12.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest for the Huskies, who are hosting the regional tournament for the second straight season after capturing the GLIAC Tournament title.

Ashland University sophomore forward Daiva Gerbec (Dublin, Ohio) and Northern Kentucky University junior guard Casse Mogan (Circleville, Ohio) rounded out the first team selections. Gerbec averaged 15.9 points and a conference-best 10.7 rebounds per game for the Eagles, who were the runner-up in the GLIAC Tournament last weekend. Mogan led the Norse with 17.8 points per contest as she was selected first-team All-GLVC for the second consecutive season.

The All-Midwest Region second team was comprised of five players from the GLVC. University of Wisconsin-Parkside junior guard Jadee Rooney (Markesan, Wisconsin) and Bellarmine University junior forward Lauren Jones (Crestwood, Kentucky) were the only underclassman on the second team after averaging 14.9 points and 17.7 points per game, respectively.

Quincy senior forward Courtney Shuman (Kahoka, Missouri) joined fellow teammate Stephanie Wagner (Elkhart, Indiana), a senior guard, on the second team, while Drury University senior guard Ja’Nell Jones (Chesterfield, Virginia) rounded out the All-Region selections. Shuman and Wagner are averaging 16.6 points and 15.7 points per game, respectively, while Ja’Nell Jones is averaging 15.6 points and 4.8 assists per appearance.

The NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament begins Friday in Houghton, Michigan. Michigan Tech will play GLVC Tournament champion and eighth-seeded Lewis University in the opening round, while Quincy will play seventh-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan College. Third-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside squares off against sixth-seeded Missouri University of Science & Technology, while Drury will take on Grand Valley State University in the four-five match-up.
