MTU's Wysocky and TU's Jaeb Chosen As GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Michigan Technological University senior forward Katie Wysoky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and Tiffin University sophomore guard Mandy Jaeb (Louisville, Ohio) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," respectively, as announced by the league office.

Michigan Tech’s Katie Wysocky recorded a double-double in each of MTU’s first three games of the 2009-10 season. The 6-0 forward posted back-to-back games of 13 points and 14 rebounds in wins over Minnesota Duluth and Missouri Western State before tallying 22 points and 11 rebounds vs. Texas A&M Commerce. Wysocky became Michigan Tech’s all-time leader in rebounds during Friday’s (Nov. 20) 67-37 win over MWSU. Her new career total is 886 rebounds.

Tiffin’s Mandy Jaeb was named to the Merrimack College Courtyard Classic All-Tournament team following her team’s 1-1 performance last weekend. She opened the season with 24 points against Slippery Rock, including a 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line with six rebounds and five assists in a 65-55 victory. She then totaled 16 points in a narrow 59-56 loss to Merrimack. The Dragons bounced back behind Jaeb’s 17 points and five rebounds in a 57-44 win over East Stroudsburg.

Ashland Eagles (1-0, 0-0 GLIAC)

Ashland opened up its season with a 75-59 victory at Urbana on Saturday (Nov. 21). The Eagles were led by freshman Beth Mantkowski who scored 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting. She also grabbed eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Senior Lacy Romine added 15 points. It is the fourth consecutive season that the Eagles have won their opening contest. Ashland next hosts the Holiday Inn Express Classic on Nov. 28-29. Ashland will play Mercyhurst on Saturday at 3 p.m. and California (PA) on Sunday at 3 p.m.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (0-2, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Ferris State University women’s basketball team opened the 2009-10 campaign with a pair of road losses this past weekend at nationally 19th-ranked Gannon and Edinboro (Pa.). The Bulldogs were led by junior forward Tiara Adams’ team-high 18 points on six-of-eight shooting at Gannon. She was also six-of-nine at the free throw line and added seven rebounds and four steals in the contest. Adams averaged a team-best 15.5 points in the two games. The Bulldogs also received eight points apiece from sophomore guard Lindsey Pettit and freshman forward/center Leah Kebler at Gannon Gannon snapped a six-game series’ losing streak to the Bulldogs with the win. The loss was Ferris’ first on opening day in five years. All five Bulldog starters finished the game in double-figure scoring at Edinboro. Junior forward Amy Joostberns tallied 16 points, and junior forward Tiara Adams netted 13 points.

 

Findlay Oilers (2-0, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Oilers are currently 2-0 on the season and averaging an impressive 91 points per game. The team scored 101 in their victory over Wheeling Jesuit last week, eclipsing the 100-point plateau for the first time since scoring 116 against Marygrove on December 19, 2007. Senior guard Audra Mihalic is chasing the 1,000 point barrier and currently has 995 career points. There have been 16 players to reach the plateau during their playing careers at Findlay. Senior guard Maggie Gompers tied her own school record with seven three pointers in the Oilers 101-61 win over Wheeling Jesuit on November 16. She previously established the mark against Lake Erie on November 25, 2008.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (1-1, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Lakers played their first overtime contest since Dec. 18, 2006, falling to visiting Drury 92-85 in the season opener for both teams. GVSU received double-digit scoring efforts from five players and four starters, including a pair of freshman playing their first collegiate games. Sophomore point guard Jasmine Padin (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming Park) led all players with 19 points and totaled a career-high with nine assists. She tallied 124 assists last season. Junior Elizabeth Van Tiflin (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) notched the second double-double of her career with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Drury. She added four three-pointers. Freshman Alex Stelfox (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) scored in double figures in each of her first two collegiate games and averaged 12.0 points. In the win over Kentucky Wesleyan, freshman twin sisters Briauna and Brittany Taylor (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Franklin) combined for 29 points on 13-of-19 shooting.

 

Hillsdale Chargers (0-2, 0-0 GLIAC)

The 2009-10 Hillsdale College women’s basketball team lost both games in its opening weekend of play in the state of Minnesota…The team lost the two games by a combined total of 10 points. The last time the Chargers lost a game by 10 or more points was at Michigan Tech in January 2008. Senior Janay Miller scored a career-high 23 points in the team’s loss to Minnesota State-Moorhead in Friday’s season-opener. She added 19 points in Saturday’s game, and her 42 points represents the most she’s had in back-to-back games in her career. Freshman Emily Anderson started both games over the weekend in her collegiate debut, and had a total of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Hillsdale will play a pair of Great Lakes Region rivals this weekend, Bellarmine and Southern Indiana, in Louisville, Ky.

 

Lake Superior State Lakers (0-0, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Lake Superior State University women’s basketball team opens their season when they travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to face Ill.-Springfield on Friday, November 27.

 

 

 

Michigan Tech. Huskies (3-0, 0-0 GLIAC)

Michigan Tech was named a preseason No. 1, the highest ranking in school history, and the Huskies are 3-0 as the nation’s No. 1 team. Senior Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) has turned in a double-double every game this season. Her sixth rebound in last Friday’s (Nov. 20) game was the 867th of her career—enough to become Tech’s all-time leader. Wysocky finished the weekend with 1,382 points and 886 rebounds. Senior center Danae Danen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) tied her career high with 22 points vs. Texas A&M Commerce. She made 11-of-15 field goals in the game and has converted 66.7 percent of her attempts this season. Tech has outscored its three opponents by an average of 18.3 points per game. The Huskies will have 12 days off before its next game, which is their home and GLIAC opener vs. Wayne State on Dec. 3.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (1-0, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team opened up the season with a 65-32 win over Northland College. This week the Wildcats are back on the road with a game at UM-Duluth Tuesday night and UW-Parkside Saturday afternoon. Christa Erickson led the “Cats with 23 points as she was 7-8 from the three-point line. Newcomer Mariah Dunham chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds...NMU will not have a home game until opening up GLIAC play Dec. 3 against Northwood..

 

Northwood Timberwolves (0-0, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Northwood University women’s basketball team opens its season this weekend when they travel to Ashland to play in the Holiday Inn Express Classic. The Timberwolves will face California (Pa.) on Saturday (Nov. 28) before taking on former GLIAC rival Mercyhurst (Pa.) on Sunday (Nov. 29).

 

 

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (1-1, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Cardinals currently sit at 1-1 as they defeated Urbana 74-63 and fell to Indianapolis 77-59. SVSU is averaging 66.5 points per game. As a team, the Cardinals are shooting 75% from the free-throw line (27-36) and are averaging 40 rebounds per contest. All nine Cardinals have seen playing time this year. Aysha Boston posted 22 points against Urbana on Nov. 15 while Grace Herzog ended with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds. SVSU has out rebounded their opponents 80-69 this season and has forced 40 turnovers. The Cardinals will travel to Lewis (Nov. 28) and Wisconsin-Parkside (Nov. 30) this week for non-conference match-ups with GLVC schools.

 

Tiffin Dragons (2-1, 0-0-0 GLIAC)

Mandy Jaeb was named to the Merrimack tourney All-Tournament team following her team’s 1-1 performance. She opened the season with 24 points against Slippery Rock, including 12 for 12 from the free throw line with 6 rebounds and 5 assists in a 65-55 victory, then totaled 16 points in a narrow 59-56 loss to Merrimack. The Dragons bounced back behind Jaeb’s 17 points and 5 rebounds in a 57-44 win over East Stroudsburg. Freshman Jordan Jenkins backed up Jaeb with ten points while grabbing five rebounds against the Rock. Jonette McQueen, also a freshman, grabbed nine rebounds as did junior Samantha McCall. McCall also dished out four assists just like teammate Karli Mast. Poor shooting hurt the Dragons against Merrimack, as they managed only 30 percent from the floor. They were also outrebounded 43-35 and were outscored in the second half 40-26. TU’s three point shooting helped keep them in the game, as they hit 45 percent of their trey attempts (10-22). Mandy Jaeb led the way with 16 points while Karli Mast had 15 and Jordan Jenkins had 9 points.

 

Wayne State Warrior (0-3, 0-0 GLIAC)

Eight members of Wayne State’s highly touted recruiting class made their debuts against Southern Indiana during WSU’s 69-68 season-opening loss on Nov. 15. Sophomore guard Felicia Thomas set numerous career-highs in Wayne State’s first three games with five assists and one block vs. Southern Indiana, 14 points against Arkansas Tech and three steals at Missouri S&T. Freshman forward Chelsea Davis just missed a double-double vs. Missouri S&T with 18 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Chelsea Kouri has scored in double digits in two of the three games with 15 points vs. both Southern Indiana and Missouri S&T. After hitting five three-pointers in three games, senior guard Brooke Bowers now has 149 three-pointers for her career placing her third in Wayne State history.
