MTU's Wysocky and NU's Wilson Chosen As GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Michigan Technological University senior forward Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and Northwood University junior forward Pam Wilson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively it was announced by the league office.
GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:
Katie Wysocky - Michigan Tech
6-0, Senior, Forward
Whitefish Bay, Wis.
Wysocky averaged 24.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals in two Tech roach wins last week. The 6-0 senior tallied 28 points and 15 rebounds in just 27 minutes of action in a 91-54 victory at Saginaw Valley State Thursday (Jan. 21) before turning in her 14th double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 72-67 win at Lake Superior State Saturday (Jan. 23). Wysocky is averaging 17.8 points and 11.7 rebounds this season.

Pam Wilson - Northwood
5-10, Junior, Forward
Grand Blanc, Mich.
Pam Wilson averaged 30.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in a pair of games last week. She shot 52.6 percent from 3-point range (10-19) and 85.7 percent from the foul line (12-14). Wilson scored a career-high 32 points against Grand Valley State, tying a school-record by making seven 3-pointers. She then netted a game-high 28 points while grabbing 11 rebounds in a victory over Ferris State. Wilson is currently third in the GLIAC in scoring (17.7 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (7.4 rpg).

Ashland Eagles (10-7, 6-6 GLIAC)
The Eagles had a perfect 3-0 week as they improved their record to 10-7 overall and 6-6 in the GLIAC. Ashland defeated Urbana at home on Jan. 19, 68-57. AU then traveled to Hillsdale on Jan. 21 and won, 80-72. Ashland finished off the week by traveling to Findlay on Jan. 23 and beat the Oilers, 80-68. Senior forward Micki Kuns had the best week of her career as an Eagle. In three games, she averaged 17.3 points on 67.7 percent shooting, 4.7 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 2.3 assists and made five out of six three-point shots. Against Urbana, she had a career-high 27 points on 12-of-16 shooting and blocked two shots going the full 40 minutes. Freshman forward Daiva Gerbec also played well in two games returning from injury. Against Hillsdale, she scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in 22 minutes. She had a career-best 24 points and 14 rebounds in the victory at Findlay. The Eagles have won four straight for the first time this season and have won seven out of nine games. AU hosts Northwood on Thursday (Jan. 28) and Wayne State on Saturday (Jan. 30) at 1 p.m.
Ferris State Bulldogs (5-12, 4-8 GLIAC)
The Ferris State University women’s basketball team has dropped four of its last five games to date following two narrow conference road losses this past week. FSU fell at Wayne State by a 69-63 count on Thursday (Jan. 21) in Detroit before losing to Northwood 68-62 on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Midland. The Bulldogs held a 15-point lead over Northwood with 15 minutes to play in the contest, but NU outscored FSU 39-18 the rest of the way to pull out the victory.Ferris sophomore guard Kelsey DeNoyelles posted back-to-back double figure scoring performances, including 15 points against Northwood. Sophomore guard Tricia Principe also had two double-digit scoring efforts with 12 points at Wayne State and 14 points at Northwood. The Bulldogs presently are tied for eighth place in the GLIAC standings with 10 league games remaining this campaign. FSU returns home for a four-game homestand beginning with Thursday’s (Jan. 28) league home tilt against Northern Michigan.
Findlay Oilers (13-4, 8-4 GLIAC)
The Oilers split a pair of home games last week, winning 74-69 over Tiffin on Thursday and losing 80-68 to Ashland on Saturday. In the Oilers win against Tiffin, sophomore guard Laura Bardall led the way with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists while senior center Jessica Vorst chipped in a season-high 17 points to go along with eight boards. Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Nelson had a solid game off the bench, scoring five points to go along with seven rebounds and a career-high tying five blocks. In the loss to Ashland, Senior guard Audra Mihalic led the way with 16 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals. Bardall added 15 points, three rebounds and three assists while Nelson had a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Senior forward Megan Sellers added only one point in the loss but tied her career-high with 14 boards.
Grand Valley State Lakers (14-3, 11-1 GLIAC)
GVSU pushed its winning streak to seven straight games with road victories at Northwood and Wayne State. The Lakers went a perfect 4-0 on their four-game road trip and are now 7-0 in 2010. They have not lost since Dec. 30 at Lake Erie. Grand Valley State had four players average double figures in points, led by freshman guard/forward Briauna Taylor (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Franklin). Taylor averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the field and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from three-point range. She scored 21 of her career-high 26 points in the second half at Northwood, including 15 straight GVSU points. Sophomore point guard Jasmine Padin (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming Park) is tied for sixth all-time in Laker history in three-pointers made with 112 triples. She has done so in just 47 games. Sophomore Emma Veach (Grand Haven, Mich.) blocked a career-high four shots against Northwood on Thursday and owned a 13-to-3 assist to turnover ratio in two games.
Hillsdale Chargers (7-9, 7-5 GLIAC)
The Hillsdale College women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak in a big way Saturday, defeating Tiffin University 101-62.Hillsdale set two team records and one individual record was set in the win. The team’s 31 assists and 15 3-pointers made are both new single-game team records. Sophomore Chelsea Harrison went 8-for-10 from 3-point land, setting the new individual record for 3-pointers made in a game. Guard Kara McCormick saw her first game action for Hillsdale since March 13, 2008, when she entered the game midway through Saturday’s first half, and she made a 3-pointer on her first shot. McCormick missed all of 2008-09 after being diagnosed with lymphoma prior to the start of that season. The Chargers had a season-high 21 offensive rebounds in Thursday’s loss to Ashland. The Chargers hadn’t lost to the Eagles since February 2006. Hillsdale wraps up a four-game homestand this week by hosting Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State Thursday and Saturday. Hillsdale hasn’t lost to SVSU since December 3, 2001.
Lake Superior State Lakers (9-7, 6-6 GLIAC)
Sophomore center Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.) totaled a career-high 16 points and 12 rebounds to record her first career double double and lead LSSU during Thursday’s 64-56 loss to Northern Michigan. She scored 13 points during a 72-67 loss to fifth-ranked Michigan Tech to average 14.5 points per game for the week. Schemberger is ranked fourth in the GLIAC in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and averages 7.2 ppg. Five Lakers scored in double figures against the Huskies. LSSU, which played five straight road games in January, returns to the road to play Findlay and Hillsdale this week. Freshman forward Maria Blazejewski (Beulah, Mich.) averaged a team-leading 18.5 ppg to lead the Lakers during December home games against the Oilers and Chargers. Blazejewski is ranked 10th in the GLIAC in scoring (13.7 ppg). Junior guard Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.) is second in the GLIAC in free-throw percentage (.887) and third in assists (4.4 apg). Junior guard Ronlea Peterson (Midland, Mich.) is third in the league in steals (2.3 spg).
Michigan Tech. Huskies (16-1, 11-1 GLIAC)
Michigan Tech swept its two games last week to extend its winning streak to six. The Huskies are 6-1 at home and 10-0 on the road this season. Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) turned in double-doubles No. 13 and 14 on the season with a 28-point, 15 rebound performance at Saginaw Valley State and a 20-point, 11 rebound effort at Lake Superior State. The 6-0 forward has reached 20 points in a game five times in the last six contests and nine times this year. She leads the GLIAC in rebounding (11.7 per game) and field goal percentage (60.4) and is second in scoring at 17.8. Senior Katie Zimmerman (Green Bay,Wis./East) scored 17 points in last Saturday’s (Jan. 23) win at Lake Superior State. The 5-6 guard, who ranks third in the GLIAC in 3-point percentage at 45.5, has averaged 19.3 points per game over her last three Saturday contests (7.0 over the last three Thursdays). Head coach John Barnes owns a 141-53 record and 72.7 winning percentage in seven seasons as the Huskies’ skipper.
Northern Michigan Wildcats (12-5, 9-3 GLIAC)
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team winner of three games in a row and four of its past six play two more games on the road this week. The Wildcats face Ferris State and Grand Valley State this week for the first time this season. Steffani Stoeger and Christa Erickson were the two players to score in double-figures in both games last week, Stoeger recorded 16 points against Lake Superior State and 20 against Saginaw Valley State while Erickson had 12 and 17 respectively. Stoeger is currently second on the team in scoring by averaging 11.0 ppg as Mariah Dunham has a team-high 12.2 ppg. Stoeger does lead the ‘Cats with 51 assists and 23 steals. Two ‘Cats are averaging over five rebounds a game with Elicia Derusha leading the way with 5.4 rpg with Dunham next at 5.3 rpg. Erin Powers with 11 blocks leads the team. NMU has played two overtime games this season as they are 1-1 this season, both overtime games within the past four games.
Northwood Timberwolves (8-8, 4-8 GLIAC)
Northwood went 1-1 last week, falling to North Division leader Grand Valley State 79-75 before earning a comeback 68-62 win over Ferris State. The Timberwolves are now 8-8 overall, 4-8 in the GLIAC. Pam Wilson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) has a very strong week for Northwood, averaging 30.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Wilson scored a career-high 32 points against Grand Valley State, tying a school-record by making seven 3-pointers. She then netted a game-high 28 points while grabbing 11 rebounds in a victory over Ferris State. Wilson is currently third in the GLIAC in scoring (17.7 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (7.4 rpg). Jodi Ostergren (Midland, Mich.) also had a double-double against Ferris State, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ostergren (1,241 points) is now 11 points away from passing former teammate Megan Starnes (1,246 points) and Maureen Elliott (1,251 points) to move into sixth in Northwood history in scoring. The Timberwolves will travel to Ashland and host Tiffin this week.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (4-13, 2-10 GLIAC)
The Saginaw Valley State University women’s basketball team dropped a 91-54 decision to Michigan Tech University, the no. 5 ranked team in the nation, on Thursday evening (Jan. 21). The Lady Cardinals were led by freshman Jasmine Kennedy, who had team-highs in points (13) and rebounds (6). Junior guard Tasha Balls had 10 points off the bench for SVSU, while junior Brittany Burkhardt chipped-in with eight points. The Lady Cardinals then suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Northern Michigan University Wildcats Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23), 69-67, in overtime. The loss drops SVSU to 4-13 overall on the season with a 2-10 record in the GLIAC. Burkhardt led the Cardinals in the contest, scoring 15 points and grabbing a game-high six rebounds. Kennedy had 13 points. Rhonda Gusa also reached double-figures in scoring, netting 10. SVSU returns to the road this weekend, as it plays at Hillsdale on Thursday (Jan. 28) in a 6:00 pm match-up before taking on Findlay on Saturday (Jan. 30) for a 1:00 pm contest.
Tiffin Dragons (5-12, 2-10 GLIAC)
Mandy Jaeb had another strong week, averaging 24.5 ppg with 6.0 rebounds during the Dragons’ 0-2 week. She opened with 26 points including 6 for 6 from the line in a narrow 74-69 loss at Findlay, then totaled 23 points in a 101-62 loss at Hillsdale. Jaeb finished shooting .500 from three point, .909 from the line, and .500 from the field. She continued to lead the GLIAC in scoring with 21.8 ppg. Tiffin University shot just 32 percent in the first half at Hillsdale while the Chargers exploded for 62 percent shooting in dropping the Dragons 101-62. Mandy Jaeb led the way with 23 points and 7 rebounds while Karli Mast had 14 and Jennifer Johnston 12. Jessica Harris led in rebounds with 10. Tiffin University dropped their sixth contest by 9 points or less, falling 74-69 to the first place Findlay Oilers on the road. Mandy Jaeb increased her GLIAC-leading scoring average to 21.8 ppg with a 26 point effort with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Jennifer Johnston added 16 points with 4 rebounds. Jessica Harris had 10 rebounds and Stephanie Kelly had 8 points.
Wayne State Warrior (4-13, 2-10 GLIAC)
The Wayne State women’s basketball team continued its steady improvement this week with a home-split against Ferris State and Grand Valley to end its four-game homestand. The Warriors defeated Ferris State 69-63 thanks to a 48.3 percent (28-of-58) shooting day. Sophomore guard Felicia Thomas had a career-best five assists to go with 13 points. Senior guard Brooke Bowers also scored 13 points. With nine points and nine rebounds, freshman guard Amelia Davis also had a career-day against Ferris State. The Warrior defense forced 24 turnovers against FSU, marking the seventh time this season WSU has forced an opponent into at least 20 giveaways. Wayne State wrapped up the week with a close 69-61 loss to Grand Valley. The Warriors had a team season-high 16 assists against the Lakers, with eight coming from Davis. Freshman forward Chelsea Davis had 11 points against GVSU, the sixth time this season she has went for at least 10 points.
