NMU's Stoeger and TU's Jaeb Chosen As GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Northern Michigan University junior guard Steffani Stoeger (Hortonville, Wis.) and Tiffin University sophomore guard Mandy Jaeb (Louisville, Ohio) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively it was announced by the league office.
GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:
Steffani Stoeger - Northern Michigan
5-7, Junior, Guard
Hortonville, Wis.
Steffani Stoeger led the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team to a home split last week. NMU lost to Findlay in overtime (83-80) and defeated Hillsdale (77-73). Against the Oilers she was 13-17 from the free throw line and added eight rebounds as she recorded 21 points. Stoeger against the Chargers was 8-10 from the floor which included 5-6 from beyond the arc for another 21-point performance. For the week she averaged 21 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal per game.

Mandy Jaeb had the best week of her career, averaging 29.3 ppg with 4.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game during the Dragons’ 1-2 week. She opened with a career high 35 points including 10 for 10 from the line in a 70-63 win at Saginaw Valley State, then returned home to score 28 points in a narrow 75-66 loss to Ferris State and 25 points in a 75-66 loss to Grand Valley State. Jaeb finished shooting .500 from three point, .904 from the line, and .500 from the field. She continued to lead the GLIAC in scoring with 21.4 ppg

Ashland Eagles (7-7, 4-6 GLIAC)
For the second consecutive week Ashland went 1-1 in two home games. Ashland lost to Grand Valley State on Jan. 14, 72-50, but bounced back with a 71-66 victory against Ferris State. The Eagles record is 7-7 overall and 4-6 in the GLIAC. Senior point guard Lindsey Gaut continues to be a force for Ashland. Against Ferris State, she scored 21 points, had five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Senior guard Lacy Romine scored 15 points, had four rebounds and three assists. AU is currently six games into its seven-game home stand. The Eagles have a very productive 4-2 record in that time. At home this season, AU is 5-3 compared to just 2-4 away from Kates Gymnasium. Ashland finishes up its home stand on Tuesday (Jan. 19) against Urbana. Then, the Eagles travel to Hillsdale on Jan. 21 and to Findlay on Jan. 23.
Ferris State Bulldogs (5-10, 4-6 GLIAC)
The Ferris State women’s basketball team posted a 1-2 mark in three league road contests last week. Ferris State junior forward Tiara Adams had two double-double efforts in the Bulldogs’ three league road games last week. Adams averaged 12 points and 10.3 rebounds in the three contests. She netted 19 points and 12 rebounds in Thursday’s (Jan. 14) 75-66 road triumph at Tiffin. Additionally, she compiled 10 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday’s (Jan.16) narrow setback at Ashland. Adams opened the week with seven points and seven rebounds in Monday’s (Jan. 11) league game at rival Grand Valley State. In addition to scoring 36 points and grabbing 31 rebounds, Adams also netted seven steals and four assists in the three games combined. Sophomore guard Tricia Principe tallied a personal career-high 23 points with five rebounds and four assists in Thursday’s league victory at Tiffin. Principe has totaled 20 points or more in two of her last four games and has reached double-figure scoring 10 times this campaign.Tiara Adams has four double-double (points and rebounds) performances thus far this season. FSU is only four wins away from recording the 450th victory in school history.
Findlay Oilers (12-3, 7-3 GLIAC)
The Oilers split their trip to the upper peninsula this past week, winning 83-80 in overtime at Northern Michigan on Thursday and then losing 82-70 to nationally ranked Michigan Tech on Saturday. The Oilers have never won both games in the upper peninsula on a road trip. In the Oilers overtime win at Northern Michigan, senior guard Audra Mihalic led the way with a season-high 27 points. She also added five assists, hit 5-of-6 three point attempts and drilled all ten of her free throws. Senior forward Megan Sellers also contributed a season-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. In the Oilers loss at Michigan Tech freshman forward Kayla Brown had a career-high 20 points. She also hit all four of her three point shots, the best of her career. Freshman guard Ashley Andrews also established a new career-high with 16 points. She drilled a career-high 4-of-7 shots from behind the three point line. Mihalic meanwhile scored 13 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds. For the week, Mihalic averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game.
Grand Valley State Lakers (12-3, 9-1 GLIAC)
The Lakers won all three contests last week, pushing their win streak to five straight games. GVSU won five games in a ten-day stretch with all those victories coming in conference play, as it is now 9-1 in the GLIAC. Of its last five wins, Grand Valley State has won four of those games by more than 20 points, as the Lakers won by an average of 18.0 points per game last week. Sophomore guard Emma Veach (Grand Haven, Mich.) averaged 13.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals while shooting 51.5 percent from the field. She scored 15 of her team-best 20 points in the second half in a road win at Tiffin on Saturday. Freshman forward Briauna Taylor (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Franklin) scored in double figures in two of the three games and averaged 11.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Taylor made nine straight three-pointers over a four-game stretch, which ended last week. She is shooting 60.0 percent (15-of-25) from three-point range this season and has scored at least nine points in her last eight contests, all off the Laker bench. GVSU has made 113 three-pointers this season, while holding its opponents to just 70 trifectas.
Hillsdale Chargers (6-8, 6-4 GLIAC)
The Hillsdale College women’s basketball team lost two very close games in the Upper Peninsula last week, falling in overtime at #5 Michigan Tech and losing by four at Northern Michigan. It was the second year in a row Hillsdale lost at NMU. Senior Janay Miller hit a basket at the regulation buzzer to send Thursday’s game at Michigan Tech into overtime. The loss to the Huskeis snapped a two-game winning streak at the SBC Gymnasium for the Chargers. Saturday’s loss at Northern Michigan was unusual in many ways. The Chargers went 0-for-1 from the free throw line for the entire game. Hillsdale outscored Northern Michigan 31-6 in second-chance points and took 31 more field goal attempts than the Wildcats. Sophomore guard Chelsea Harrison came within one point of her season-high in points vs. the Huskies, scoring 21. She has made two or more 3-pointers in 10 of her 12 games played this season and leads the GLIAC in 3-point makes per game. Senior Brooke Knight has at least 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in four straight games. She played all 45 minutes of Thursday’s loss at Michigan Tech, the third time this season she has played 40 minutes or more in a game. Hillsdale plays its next four straight games at home, starting Thursday at 6 p.m. vs. Ashland University.
Lake Superior State Lakers (9-5, 6-4 GLIAC)
After scoring a total of seven points during her first two games in January, junior guard Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.) has averaged 18.3 ppg during her last three, including an average of 20.5 ppg during last week’s victories at Northwood and Wayne State. Joseph shot 47.8 percent from the field and was 14-of-14 at the free-throw line for the week. Saturday’s 24-point performance at Wayne State was her second-highest scoring total of the year. Joseph is ranked second in LSSU career free-throw percentage at .819 (194-237). She is second in the GLIAC this season at .864 (51-59) and fourth in average assists per game (4.5). Sophomore center Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.) is ranked fifth in the GLIAC in rebounding (7.6 rpg). Junior guard Ronlea Peterson (Midland, Mich.) is third in the league in steals (2.6 spg) and assist/turnover ratio (1.7). LSSU was 2-0 against Northern Michigan and 0-2 against Michigan Tech last season.
Michigan Tech. Huskies (14-1, 9-1 GLIAC)
Michigan Tech owns a four-game winning streak and a 14-1 overall record. Only one other time (1992-93) have the Huskies won 14 of their first 15 games. Senior Katie Zimmerman (Green Bay, Wis./East) scored 23 points with the help of a school-record seven 3-pointers last Saturday (Jan. 16) vs. Findlay. The 5-6 guard also surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the game. Zimmerman now holds the school records for 3-pointers made in a game (7), season (99) and career (251). With Zimmerman eclipsing the 1,000-point mark, Tech now has four players on its roster with at least 1,000 career points in Wysocky (1,588), Stream (1,246), Danen (1,092) and Zimmerman (1,014). Tech leads the GLIAC in scoring offense (75.8), scoring defense (57.2), field goal percentage (47.0), field goal percentage defense (37.0), free throw percentage (81.3) and assists (17.8). With 22 points and 11 rebounds vs. Findlay, senior Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) registered her seventh 20-point game and her 12th double-double of the season.
Northern Michigan Wildcats (10-5, 7-3 GLIAC)
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team has split its last four games and now go on the road for the next four. Last week NMU played and lost its first overtime game of the season to Findlay (83-80) and then defeated the Chargers of Hillsdale College (77-73). Steffani Stoeger led the Wildcats in each game last week with 21 points each game, she was 13-17 from the free throw line against Findlay. Kellie Rietveld had double-figures games last week with 18 points against the Oilers and then added 16 against the Chargers as she was 7-9 from the floor. Erin Powers came off the bench against Hillsdale and recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, she was 5-5 from the floor and 5-6 from the free throw line. Mariah Dunham continues to lead the team by averaging 12.5 ppg with teammate Stoeger second on the list with 10.1 ppg…Dunham has pulled down a team-high 65 rebounds (5.4 rpg). Stoeger leads the ‘Cats with 47 assists.
Northwood Timberwolves (7-7, 3-7 GLIAC)
Northwood went 1-1 last week, falling at the buzzer to Lake Superior State 48-47 before defeating rival Saginaw Valley State 77-68. The Timberwolves are now 7-7 overall, 3-7 in the GLIAC. Jodi Ostergren (Midland, Mich./Dow) had her best week of the season for Northwood, averaging 24.5 points per game, leading Northwood in scoring in both games. She shot 65.4 percent from the floor (17-26) and 88.2 percent from the foul line (15-17). Against Lake Superior State, Ostergren finished with 20 points, going 8-10 from the floor and 4-4 from the foul line. Then in the SVSU contest, Ostergren scored a season-high 29 points. She went 9-16 from the floor and 11-13 from the foul line against the Cardinals. Pam Wilson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) also had a strong week for NU, averaging 18.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She scored 21 points against SVSU. Northwood will host Grand Valley State and Ferris State this week.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (4-11, 2-8 GLIAC)
The Saginaw Valley State University women’s basketball team dropped a 70-63 decision to visiting Tiffin University on Jan. 11. Brittany Burkhardt had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the contest to lead SVSU. Jasmine Kennedy also recorded a double-double, netting 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Rhonda Gusa had 10 points as well, and freshman Grace Herzog had 10 boards. The Lady Cardinals then suffered a loss Jan. 14, 68-58, to Wayne State University. SVSU was led by Burkhardt, who ended the night with 17 points and 10 rebounds to make that her third double-double of the season. Kelley Wesp ended the night with 13 points and five rebounds and Kennedy ended the night with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was the second-straight double-double for both Burkhardt and Kennedy. SVSU then traveled to Northwood University and fell by a score of 77-68, bringing their overall record to 4-11 on the season and 2-8 in the GLIAC. Jasmine Woods led the way for Saginaw Valley in the second half by scoring all ten of her points for the night. The Cardinals were led overall by Kennedy who ended the game with 14 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Tiffin Dragons (5-10, 2-8 GLIAC)
Mandy Jaeb had the best week of her career, averaging 29.3 ppg with 4.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game during the Dragons’ 1-2 week. Against GVSU, Jessica Harris added a double-double scoring 15 points while hauling in 12 boards. Karli Mast also reached double figures, scoring 13 points while handing out three assists. Jordan Jenkins (six), Melissa Gilliland (four), and Jennifer Johnston (three) accounted for the rest of the Dragons’ scoring. Tiffin University got another stellar performance from Mandy Jaeb, as she racked up 28 points with 5 steals and 4 rebounds, but 28 percent field goal shooting by the Dragons in the second half led to a narrow 75-66 defeat to Ferris State. Stephanie Kelly also had 16 points, as she and Jaeb combined for 44 of the team’s 66 points. Tiffin University got a season-best performance from the GLIAC’s leading scorer, Mandy Jaeb, in a 70-63 win at Saginaw Valley State. Jaeb scored 35 points in the victory.
Wayne State Warrior (3-12, 1-9 GLIAC)
The Wayne State women’s basketball team earned its first GLIAC win of the season this past week, defeating Saginaw Valley 68-58 at home. WSU’s 16 steals were a season-high for the Warriors as were their 14 made free throws. Four Warriors scored at least 10 points in the victory including junior guard Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) who hit five three-pointers to finish with a season-best 17 points. For the second time this season, freshman forward Chelsea Davis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) fell one rebound shy of a double-double after an 11 point, nine rebound performance against the Cardinals. WSU concluded its week with a 79-55 loss to Lake Superior. Despite the defeat, the Warriors had something to celebrate as senior guard Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) scored her 1,000th career point against the Lakers. Bowers is just the 15th player in program history to score at least 1,000 points.
