Michigan Techs Katie Wysocky Named 2010 GLIAC Women's Basketball "Player of the Year"

BAY CITY, Mich. -
Michigan Technological University senior forward Katie
Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) was named the 2010 Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's
basketball “Player of the Year” in voting conducted by
the league’s head coaches. Grand Valley State
University’s Alex Stelfox (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) was tabbed “Freshman of the Year,”
while MTU's John Barnes was named “Coach of
the Year” by his peers.
Wysocky leads the GLIAC in rebounding and field
goal percentage and is second in scoring. The 6-0 forward has
turned in 21 double-doubles on the season and was recently named to
the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team. Wysocky, who is
Tech’s fifth-ever GLIAC Player of the Year and first since
Andrea Novak in 2004, is the school’s all-time leading
rebounder (1,172). Her 1,822 points are 35 short of the school
scoring record.
Stelfox leads the Lakers in scoring (12.3 ppg.),
field goal percentage (.571), and blocked shots (40). Stelfox is
also third on the team with 32 steals and her 4.2 rebounds per game
places her fourth. She ranks third in the GLIAC in field goal
percentage and her 153 made field goals is the fourth highest total
in the conference. Stelfox’s 40 blocked shots are the third
most in the league and tied for the ninth most in a single season
in Grand Valley State history. She has rejected a shot in 23 of 27
games, while her 40 blocks are the most in six years at GVSU.
Ranked 13th in the GLIAC in scoring, Stelfox has scored in
double-figures in 21 of the Lakers’ 27 regular season
contest, while leading GVSU in scoring in 10 games. She scored a
career-high 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting in a 69-61 win at Wayne
State on Jan. 23 and recorded her first double-double (12 points,
10 rebounds) in a 73-49 win over Lake Superior State on Jan. 9.
Barnes guided the Huskies to a school-recod 25
regular season wins including a GLIAC-record 20 league victories.
Tech is 25-2 overall and has been ranked in the nation’s top
five all season long. Barnes, has his team in position for a fifth
NCAA Tournament berth during his tenure. The seventh-year skipper
has compiled a 151-54 record (.737 winning percentage) and three
straight GLIAC North Division titles. The 2009-10 Huskies were the
first in school history to be ranked No. 1 in the nation.This is
the third GLIAC “Coach of the Year” honor for Barnes
who received it last season as well as in 2005-06.
