BAY CITY, Mich. --
The head women's basketball coaches of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) chose Hillsdale College senior forward Katie Cezat (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) as the league's preseason "Player of the Year."
Selected members of the media and the GLIAC's Sports Information Directors were asked to choose the Conference's Basketball Preseason Polls. The 30-member group tabbed Michigan Technological University and Hillsdale College to win the league's North and South Division titles, respectively.
Michigan Tech returns nearly 80 percent of its scoring
from a year ago when it won the GLIAC North Division and league
tournament titles. The Huskies are led by All-America candidate
Katie Wysocky, who averaged 16.1 points and 9.7 rebounds as a
sophomore in 2007-08. Sarah Stream, who was an All-GLIAC performer
in 2006-07, rejoins the team after missing last year with injury.
The two preseason All-GLIAC selections will combine with a stellar
supporting cast in hopes of making the program's 14th appearance in
the NCAA Tournament.
The Hillsdale College women's basketball team
returns four starters from its 2007-08 squad that set a school
record for best winning percentage in a season (23-5 .821). The
Chargers won the GLIAC South Division with a 15-2 conference
record. Forward Katie Cezat was named the 2007-08 GLIAC Player of
the Year after leading the conference in scoring and rebounding.
She was also named First-Team All-GLIAC South Division and to the
South Division's All-Defensive Team. Joining Cezat on the
All-Defensive Team was returning starter Claire Aubrey, who
averaged a career-high 8.5 points per game last season. Returning
starting guard Brooke Knight ranked in the top 10 in the GLIAC in
assists and minutes played per game, while returning starter Janay
Miller set a new career-high with 9.0 points per game, second-most
among the team's 10 returning players.
Joining Cezat on the preseason All-GLIAC South Division Team are: senior guard Jasmine McCall of Wayne State University; junior forward Jodi Ostergren and senior forward Megan Starnes of Northwood University; and senior forward Lynsey Warren of Ashland University.
The 2008-09 preseason All-GLIAC North Division Team includes: senior center Jackie Armstrong of Lake Superior State University; junior guard Sarah Stream of Michigan Tech; senior guard Teghan Thelen of Ferris State University; senior forward Kim Wyngaard of Grand Valley State University; and junior forward Katie Wysocky of Michigan Tech.
Hillsdale senior forward Katie Cezat
(Plymouth, Mich./Canton) returns for her second
season as a starter after a record-breaking 2007-08 season. Cezat
was named the GLIAC Player of the Year and the Great Lakes Region
Player of the Year after averaging 24.0 points and 12.6 rebounds
per game, both school records. She led all Division II players in
scoring average and broke 10 school records last season. Among her
school records set last season were points in a game (42), rebounds
in a game (26), points in a season (673) and rebounds in a season
(353).
Wayne State senior guard Jasmine McCall (Detroit,
Mich./CMA) was voted to the All-GLIAC South Division First
Team a year ago after scoring in double figures 22 times, including
six contests with at least 20 points, and leading the GLIAC with
101 steals (3.74 per game). In addition to leading the Warriors in
field goals made, points, scoring average and minutes played,
McCall ranked among the GLIAC leaders in assist/turnover ratio
(fifth), scoring (11th) and assists (12th).
Northwood junior forward Jodi Ostergren (Midland,
Mich./Dow) earned Second Team All-North Division honors as
a sophomore, when she averaged 13.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per
game while shooting 52.0 percent from the floor. Ostergren set a
school record by connecting on 121 free throws last season, a
number which ranked her second in the GLIAC. Ostergren also led the
conference in offensive rebounds, averaging 3.78 per game. She had
four double-doubles on the season and led Northwood in scoring nine
times.
Senior forward Megan Starnes (Mt. Pleasant,
Mich.) led Northwood in scoring (15.1 ppg) and rebounding
(7.5 rpg) as a junior, becoming the first player in school history
to earn First Team All-GLIAC honors. The senior finished with five
double-doubles on the season while leading Northwood in scoring 15
times. She also became the first player at Northwood to be named to
the All-Defensive team as well as earning GLIAC Player of the Week
honors twice. Starnes is the third leading scorer and rebounder
among players returning to the GLIAC this season.
This is the first year senior Lynsey Warren (Worthington,
Ohio/Bishop Watterson) has concentrated solely on
basketball, after earning All-America honors as a setter for the
volleyball team the past four years. A year ago, the 6-2 center
averaged 8.0 ppg., 4.9 rpg., and blocked 15 shots in 25 games.
Warren did not play in 2006-07, but in 2005-06, averaged 7.8 ppg.,
and 5.1 rpg. Her size and ability to run the floor give the Eagles
an added dimension inside.
Lake Superior State senior center Jackie Armstrong
(Haslett, Mich.) was the 2006 GLIAC Freshman of the Year
and is a two-time GLIAC All-Academic Team selection. Last season,
she was LSSU's top scorer, averaging 11.7 points per game, and No.
3 rebounder at 4.8 rebounds per game. Her most-impressive
improvement has been at the free-throw line, where she has gone
from shooting 47.3 percent as a freshman to 50.5 percent as a
sophomore and 72.4 percent as a junior. She has recorded 888 career
points.
Michigan Tech junior point guard Sarah Stream
(Ishpeming, Mich./Westwood) is a two-time
All-GLIAC selection. She led the Huskies in both points and assists
in 2006-07, but missed last year with injury. The 5-7 guard enters
her junior season with 763 career points.
Ferris State senior guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo,
Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) was the Bulldogs' second-leading
scorer (10.4 ppg.) last season and added 119 rebounds, 85 assists
along with 35 steals in starting 25 of 29 games. Her 50 made
three-pointers led the squad and ranked as the 10th-best seasonal
figure in school history. Thelen currently ranks eighth in school
history with 99 career three-pointers made and is among the top 10
performers in school career three-point percentage (.350).
Senior Kim Wyngaard (Kimberly, Wis.) enters the
season as the Lakers' leading returning scorer, after averaging
12.0 ppg. during her junior season. The 5-10 forward led GVSU in
rebounding in 2007-08, pulling down 6.2 boards per game and her 79
offensive rebounds were the fifth-best figure in the conference.
Wyngaard shot .538 from the floor, including .457 on three-point
attempts. She scored in double-figures in 20 of 28 games, including
a career-high 20 points over eventual national champion Northern
Kentucky.
Michigan Tech junior Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay,
Wis.) is a two-time All-GLIAC performer and was named
2006-07 GLIAC Freshman of the Year. The 6-0 forward comes off a
sophomore season in which she tallied 500 points and a
school-record 301 rebounds.
