EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Sophomore outfielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) and senior pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) of Wayne State University have been selected as the Daktronics softball Midwest Region “Player of the Year” and “Pitcher of the Year,” respectively, in a vote by the region’s sports information directors..

Hanes, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Pitcher of the Year," has an eye-popping 40-6 overall record with a 0.54 ERA. Hanes has racked up 340 strikeouts in 300-plus innings of work. The school’s single-season record-holder for wins, Hanes is just two wins shy of the Warrior’s all-time career mark of 72 despite playing for Wayne State for just two seasons.

Allen, the GLIAC "Player of the Year," is hitting .401 with nine home runs, 14 doubles, and 30 RBIs from the lead-off spot. Allen needs just 11 hits to become the Warrior’s all-time single-season record holder.
Hanes and Allen have led Wayne State to a 50-11 record and to the Midwest Super-Regional, which is May 21-22 in Detroit, Michigan.

Wayne State’s opponent in the Super-Regional, Ashland University, had two players on the first team. Sophomore hurler Emlyn Knerem (Brunswick, Ohio) and junior designated player Logan Hursey (Zanesville, Ohio) were among 13 individuals to receive Daktronics, Inc. first-team All-Region honors. Hursey, who helped lead the Eagles to a 36-11 overall mark, also earned second-team All-Region accolades as a pitcher.
Rounding out the first-team pitching selections was Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) "Pitcher of the Year" Torie Bunzell (Utica, Illinois), who led Quincy University to the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament by posting a 26-9 record with a 0.99 ERA and 353 strikeouts.
GLVC "Player of the Year," Megan Russell (Indianapolis, Indiana). garnered first-team honors as a utility player after splitting time as a pitcher and first baseman. Russell led the University of Indianapolis to the GLVC regular-season title and to the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament.
Missouri University of Science & Technology junior Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Kentucky) earned first-team All-Region honors at first base, while Indianapolis junior Jamie Keltz (Avon, Indiana) was the first-team honoree at second base. Hillsdale College sophomore Jessica Guertin (Lancaster, California) was selected as the first team third baseman, while Lewis University freshman Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Illinois) was named to the first team at shortstop.
Lewis freshman Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Illinois) and Quincy junior Erin Gregory (St. Louis, Missouri) rounded out the first-team outfield selections, while Saint Joseph’s College sophomore Brittinie Borema (Manhattan, Illinois) rounded out the first-team selections as a catcher.
Joining Hursey as a second-team pitching selection is Northern Kentucky University junior April Ehlers (Greenville, Indiana) and Ferris State University senior Kayle Stevenson (Holland, Michigan).
The second-team infield was comprised of Hillsdale sophomore first baseman Jennifer Berlet (Walton, Indiana), Northern Kentucky senior second baseman Rose Broderick (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore shortstop Jessica Farris (Independence, Kentucky), University of Missouri-St. Louis senior third baseman Meaghan Baurer (Glasford, Illinois), and Wayne State freshman catcher Brittany Omelanchuck (Brooklin, Ontario).
Outfielders on the second team included University of Wisconsin-Parkside junior Christine Holthus (Elgin, Illinois), The University of Findlay junior Jaci Messmer (Forest, Ohio), and Wayne State senior outfielder Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ontario).
Missouri-St. Louis junior JaCee Ellis (Frankford, Missouri) earned second-team accolades as a designated player, while Northern Kentucky freshman pitcher/outfielder Emily Schwaeble (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned second-team honors as a utility player.
