Grand Valley State's Paul Zielinski Named GLIAC Men's Cross Country "Runner of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University sophomore Paul Zielinski (Columbus, Ind./North) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's cross country "Runner of the Week."

Grand Valley State sophomore Paul Zielinski (Columbus, Ind.) helped GVSU to a second place finish at the Michigan Intercollegiates on Friday, October 9. He was in a group of seven GVSU runners that finished in the top-23. Zielinski crossed the finish line seventh with a time of 25:27. The Lakers recorded a score of 55 points, behind first-place Michigan with 32.

Ashland Eagles

The Eagles were idle the past two weeks and will compete again in the GLIAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24, in University Center, Mich.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Ferris State University cross country teams came out of their final tune-up before the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships with successful results on Saturday (Oct. 10) at the Wisconsin-Parkside Lucian Rosa Invitational held in Kenosha, Wis. The Bulldog men’s team placed fourth in its field with 108. The Bulldogs were paced by sophomore Tyler Crossman, who was eighth overall (26:10.7) among 193 runners competing in the 8K men’s division. Sophomore Steve Neshkoff placed 24th (26:51.0), freshman Alex Bladecki was 29th (26:56.7). The Bulldogs will compete in the GLIAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24, in University Center, Mich.

 

Findlay Oilers

The Oilers were idle the past two weeks and will compete again in the GLIAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24, in University Center, Mich.

 

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

The GVSU men’s cross country team took home a second-place finish at the Michigan Intercollegiates in Grand Rapids, Mich. last Friday (Oct. 9)…GVSU totaled a team score of 55 points, behind first-place Michigan with 32…Eastern Michigan finished third with 66 points, followed by Aquinas (167) and Calvin College (178)…Grand Valley State placed seven runners in the top-23, led by sophomore Tyler Emmorey (Cedar Springs, Mich.), who placed second with a time of 25:09…Sophomore Paul Zielinski (Columbus, Ind.) crossed the finish line seventh with a time of 25:27, followed by senior Ross Faasse in 11th (25:46)…Sophomores Anthony Witt (Jasonville, Ind.) and Jeff Nordquist (Kalamazoo, Mich.) both finished with times of 25:53, with Witt totaling a 17th place finish and Nordquist coming in 18th…Sophomore Ryan Toth (North Liberty, Ind.) placed 21st (26:01) and redshirt freshman Ben Steavenson (Dexter, Mich.) came in 23rd (26:02)…GVSU will compete at the GLIAC Championship on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Saginaw, Mich. at 11:00 a.m.

 

Hillsdale Chargers

Hillsdale’s men’s team took ninth place at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships with a team score of 250 points. Timothy Howse was the Chargers’ top finisher with a time of 26:08, 26th place overall. Hillsdale’s next two runners finished 52nd, 54th and 56th overall in the race. The trio was led by Cameron Blaauw (26:53), followed by Chuck Wysong (26:54) and Jacob Secor (26:54).

 

Lake Superior State Lakers

Lake Superior State totaled 43 points and placed second at the U.P. Collegiate meet held Friday at Chocolay Downs Golf Course in Marquette. Junior Sean Vardy (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) was sixth in 25:25.9 to lead the LSSU men. Junior Lucas Pease (Bellevue, Mich.) finished eighth in 25:32.7, while the pack including freshman Jeff Kuhl (Clarkson, Mich.), freshman Mackenzie Oglesby (Shodack Landing, N.Y.), sophomore Stephen Bates (Corunna, Mich.) and freshman Robert Swain (New Hudson, Mich.)) was 14th through 17th, respectively.

 

 

Michigan Tech. Huskies

Michigan Tech junior Brian Stetter posted his third win of the season at the Upper Peninsula Championships Friday (Oct. 9) in Marquette. He covered the 7.5-kilometer course in a time of 23:54, 53 seconds ahead of second place. Overall the Tech men placed six runners in the top-10. Senior Ken Gilkerson finished third in 25:08 followed by senior Oskar Lund in fourth with a time of 25:17. The Huskies compete next at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 24.

 

 

Northwood Timberwolves

The Northwood University cross country teams competed at the Michigan Intercollegiates October 9. Northwood finished 16th out of 25 teams with 416 points.Leading the way for the Timberwolves was senior Derek Kraus (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa), who finished 54th overall with a time of 26:43.7. Sam Watson (Rochester, Mich.) placed 82nd at 27:21.5.

 

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s cross country team competed this afternoon (Oct. 9) in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Cardinals ran against some very tough competition including Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, and Grand Valley State University. Saginaw Valley placed sixth overall with four runners in the top 50. Leading the Cards was sophomore Nick Ekel who crossed the line tied with two Grand Valley runners, Anthony Witt and Jeff Nordquist, with a time of 25:54. Closely following Ekel were seniors Steve Genther (26:02), placing 24th, and Cortland Seaver (26:09), placing 27th overall. Rounding out the Cardinals top five were senior Derek Stone, finishing with a final time of 26:40, and freshman Tyler Noble timing in at 27:27. Saginaw Valley competes again on Saturday (Oct. 24) when they host the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) meet beginning at 11:00am.

 

Tiffin Dragons

The Dragons competed on Saturday at the Wilmington College Fall Classic, finishing 4th of 26 teams and the women taking 6th of 25 squads.For the men, Mike Eblin was the top finisher in 18th place in 26:35.46 while Dominique O’Neil was 23rd in 26:46.82. Other finishers in the top five for TU were Brock Lloyd (31st), Adam Nunns (41st), and Stephen Miles (47th). The Dragons also had a number of other runners finishing in the top 100 including Atlantis Troutman, Kyle Anderson, Alex Frey, and Brian Grime.

 

 

Wayne State Warriors

The Wayne State men’s cross country team extended its winning streak to three races this past week at the Lucian Rosa Invite. The Warriors won the event thanks to a great all-around effort that saw Wayne State’s top five runners all finish in the top-10 of the adjusted placings. Even with the unattached runners being factored in, WSU’s top five runners all finished in the top-15. Kevin deBear led Wayne State with an overall finish of seventh at a time of 26:01.0. Alex Townsend (26:20.1), Pat Webster (26:20.9) and Travis Barczak (26:29.0) were close behind finishing 10th, 11th and 12th overall. Wayne State will next compete at the GLIAC Championship on Oct. 24.
