TU's Jason Bumb Named GLIAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week

Bay City, Mich. -- Tiffin's Jason Bumb was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's cross country runner of the week as announced by the conference office.

Junior Jason Bumb was the individual champion for Tiffin University in the Tiffin University/Heidelberg Open.an unscored open meet at Tiffin on Aug. 30. Bumb won the men's 8k in 25:45, finishing ahead of 29 other runners. Bumb took the lead just after the mile and increased his lead throughout the remainder of the race, finishing 19 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Ashland -  The Eagles are ranked fourth in the regional rankings and 23rd in the national poll. AU opened its season last week (Aug. 29) at the Kent State Short Course Open. No team scores were kept. Ashland, Kent State, Malone and Ohio State were the competing teams. Sophomore Brock Weaver (Ashland, OH) led the Eagles, placing 16th on the 6K course in 19:37.86. Sophomore Cameron Johnson (Galion, OH/Mount Gilead) was 19th in 19:43.30.

Ferris State - The Ferris State University cross country team officially opens the 2008 campaign by taking part in the GLIAC Preview Meet hosted by Lake Superior State this Saturday (Sept. 6) starting at 10 a.m. in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Bulldogs are slated to compete in four meets prior to the GLIAC Championships this season. FSU will host its annual Bulldog Invitational on Sept. 19 at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris will also play host to the 2008 NCAA-II Midwest Regional Championships on Nov. 8 in Big Rapids. Former Bulldog runner Steve Picucci is serving as the program's interim head coach for the 2008 season. Picucci was a three-time team Most Valuable Runner Award recipient during his Bulldog cross country career.

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State University started the cross country season with the 2008 Laker Kick-Off Classic on Thursday, Aug. 28. The Lakers took on Indiana Tech in a non-scoring meet at the Tower Trails on the GVSU campus. On the men's side, Tyler Emmorey took third place for Grand Valley State with a time of 26:45 on the five-mile course. Jeff Nordquist was fourth at 26:49 and Ryan Toth finished eighth at 27:33. Nate Knisely took ninth at 27:45 and Ross Faasse was right behind him in 10th with the same time.

Lake Superior State - Senior Luke Allen (Mainistee, Mich.) placed 21st in 17:19.6 to lead LSSU at the U.P. Collegiate Opener held Friday at Michigan Tech. The top five finishers for the LSSU men also included freshman Andy Gaul (Port Huron, Mich.), who was 34th in 17:48.6, junior Jake Hoover (Capac, Mich.), who was 36th in 18:09.4, sophomore Lucas Pease (Bellevue, Mich.), who was 37th in 18:09.8, and freshman Michael McPherson (Ironwood, Mich.), who was 39th in 18:15.6. LSSU was third in the team standings with 85 points. The Lakers play host to the GLIAC Preview Meet at 4 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Tanglewood Marsh Golf Course.

Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech opened the season by hosting it's only home meet of the season, the UP Collegiate Opener. Sophomore Brian Stetter led the men's team with a runner-up finish in the five-kilometer race in 16:25.9. Tech also had two other runners place in the top 10, senior Stuart Kramer finished fourth and sophomore Colin Singleton finished tenth. The team will return to competition Friday (Sept. 5) at the Pre-GLIAC Championships hosted by Lake Superior State.

Northwood - The Northwood cross country teams open their season this Friday (September 5) at the NU Open ... the women's race is at 5:15, followed by the men's race at 5:45.

Tiffin - Tiffin University ran well in an unscored open meet at the Tiffin University/Heidelberg Open on Aug. 30. Jason Bumb won the men's 8k in 25:45, while Jeremy Lee and Thomas Buxton finished in the third and fourth spot, respectively in times of 26:39 and 26:44. Tiffin now runs in the NCAA II Pre-Regional at Big Rapids, Michigan on Friday, Sept. 19.

Wayne State - Five members of the Wayne State University Men's Cross Country team finished in the top ten at the UP Collegiate Opener resulting in a first place team finish. Senior Abdullah Saleh crossed the finish line first capturing a new meet record. Saleh ran 16:04, twenty seconds faster than the record established two years ago. New-comer, Kevin deBear ran 16:53 joining Saleh, Omar Saidi, Dan Kapadia and Nick Kroll as a top-ten finisher. Also debuting at today's meet were freshman Travis Barczak, Charlie Cavell and Alex Townsend.
