AU & GVSU Women's Indoor Track & Field Squads Tie for Second at the 2010 Division II Championships
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Women's Indoor Track & Field teams of Ashland University and Grand Valley State University tied for second place at the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The two day championship event was hosted by Adams State College of Alamosa, Colo.
The Eagles and Lakers each tallied 47 points in tying for runner-up honors. The two squads trailed only Lincoln University (Mo.), which claimed the D-II championship with 56 points.
Ashland's men's team led the contingent of GLIAC sqauds at the event by placing seventh with 30 points.
Ashland University claimed three individual championships at the event. The national titles came from Abby Kacsandi in the women's high jump, Kelly Ash in the women's shot put, and Steph Tinney in the women's 400 meter run.
GVSU's best showings came from Monica Kinney and Chanelle Caldwell, as both took home second place finishes. Kinney ran the mile in 4:50.48, earning Grand Valley State eight points and All-American honors. Caldwell crossed the finish line with a time of 2:08.87 in the 800-meter run, also earning GVSU eight points and All-America honors.
The AU men's team also claimed an individual title when Kurt Roberts set a D-II Championship meet record with his throw of 19.80 meters in the shot put. Hillsdale College's Jason Stomps helped the Chargers to a tie for 10th place, taking first place in the weight throw after recording a distance of 21.55 meters.
