Grand Valley State Men and Women Teams Win 2010 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Grand Valley State University men and women teams win the 2010 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Grand Valley State's women's track and field team claimed its 11th consecutive GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship. The Lakers tallied a team score of 225.5 points, outdistancing Ashland University's second place total of 152. Hillsdale College finished third (136), followed by Northern Michigan University (41.5) and the University of Findlay (36). Ferris State University finished with 19 points, followed by Tiffin University (18), Northwood University (15), Saginaw Valley State University (13) and Lake Superior State University (6).

Grand Valley came back from second place on the first day to claim the title. On the second day GVSU scored 20 points in the 60-meter hurdles. Senior Candice Wheat took the top-spot with a time of 8.51 seconds, followed by Jade Hull in third (8.83) and Danielle Fonseca in fifth (8.89). Wheat also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.20 seconds. Lauren Bergstrom took home the GLIAC title in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.79. The Lakers took four of the top-five spots in the mile run, scoring 27 points. Sophomore Monica Kinney took the top-spot with a time of 4:57.30, followed by Ashley Botham in second (5:00.06), Julia Nowak in fourth (5:00.52) and Eileen Creutz in fifth (5:01.46). GVSU scored 23 points in the 3000-meter run and took the top-two spots. Junior Megan Maceratini finished first with a time of 10:00.77, followed by Amy Kolin (10:04.99). Sophomore Sara Parks placed sixth (10:17.63) and Megan Charter finished seventh with a time of 10:18.56. The women's 4x400-meter relay of Caldwell, Vallar, Danielle Fonseca and Wheat, set a new GLIAC record and school record with a time of 3:43.77.

GLIAC women athletes broke five records in the 2010 Championship. Ashland's Steph Tinney broke the 400m record with a time of 55.23. Grand Valley State's team of Chanelle Caldwell, Kayla Vallar, Danielle Fonseca, and Candice Wheat holds the GLIAC record with a time of 3:43.77. The high jump record was broken by Ashland's Abby Kacsandi (1.74m). GVSU's Jocelyn Kuksa broke the pole vault record with a vault of 3.90m. Scoring 3,531 points in the pentathalon, Ashland's Lisa Roth now hold the GLIAC record.

Grand Valley State's men's track and field team finished first at the 2010 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships with a team score of 167 points. Ashland finished second with 123 points followed by Tiffin (84.5), Saginaw Valley State (82) and Hillsdale in fifth (68). Findlay scored 61.5 points followed by Northwood (38), Ferris State (25), and Lake Superior State (14).

GVSU men also were in second place going into the final day of competition. On the second day the Lakers took three of the top-four sports, scoring 23 points. Sophomore Tyler Emmorey took the top-spot with a time of 4:10.97, followed by freshman Jon Manby in second (4:12.36) and Larry Julson in fourth (4:14.31). Emmorey and Manby both hit the NCAA provisional mark for the first time this season. Sophomore Jeff Nordquist took the GLIAC title in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:32.11. Sophomore Paul Zielinski placed fifth (8:36.58) and Emmorey in eighth (8:39.73). Senior Nate Miller automatically qualified for nationals in the high jump with a first place finish and a jump of 6'11.75". The Lakers scored 17 points in the shot put and had three athletes in the top-five. Sophomore Matt Armstrong placed second with a throw of 56'11.50", while Donny Stiffler finished fourth (56') and Ian Evans fifth (55'2").

Six GLIAC records were claimed by GLIAC men athletes. Tiffin's Anthony Thomas now holds the GLIAC record in the 200m with a time of 21.45 seconds. Curtis Smithey from Findlay broke the 400m record clocking 47.42 seconds while SVSU's Tony Filipek broke the 800m record (1:50.47). Tiffin's 4x400m relay of Deven Keene, Anthony Thomas, Justin Ware, Dominic Colvin time of 3:11.69 slashed the previous GLIAC record. The distance medley relay team from SVSU of Charlie Richards, Marion Body, Tony Filipek, Derek Stone clocked 9:55.26 for a new GLIAC record. Lastly, Jonathon Allen from Lake Superior State won the triple jump and hold the GLIAC record at 15.45m.
