Ohio Dominican's Carlos Perez Named GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - BAY CITY, Mich. - Ohio Dominican University junior Carlos Perez (Miami, Fla./Barron Callier) earned GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" honors after going 6-0 this past week in singles and doubles play against Findlay, Michigan Tech, and Lake Superior State.

Ohio Dominican University junior Carlos Perez had a perfect 6-0
week for the Panthers at #4 singles and #2 doubles. Perez claimed a
6-3, 6-1 victory against Findlay on Tuesday, before claiming a 4-6,
7-5, 6-4 victory at Michigan Tech on Friday. On Saturday, Perez won
his singles matach at Lake Superior 6-4, 7-6. In doubles action,
Perez teamed with Greg Dillon to win their three #2 doubles flights
by scores of 8-5, 8-4 and 8-5. For the year, Perez is 7-2 in GLIAC
singles play and 5-3 in GLIAC doubles play.

Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University
men’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches against
regionally-ranked foes on the road this past weekend (April 8-9).
The Bulldogs suffered a 6-2 loss versus Lewis (Ill.) on Friday
(April 8) afternoon to open the two-match trip. FSU then fell
to Southern Indiana by an 8-1 count in Saturday’s (April 9)
neutral site tilt at the same location. Ferris State dropped to
12-7 overall this season with the two setbacks. FSU entered this
weekend’s play listed sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association’s (ITA) Midwest Regional Rankings. USI is
presently third with Lewis at number seven overall. The top six
teams at the end of the year will earn berths into the NCAA-II
Tournament in early May at a campus site to be announced. The
official announcement of this year’s field will be made later
this month. Ferris State will next take part in the 2011 Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament this
weekend (April 15-17) in Midland, Mich.
Findlay
Oilers
The University of Findlay
men’s tennis team went 0-2 last week to drop to 7-8 on the
year and 3-6 in the GLIAC. The Oilers were defeated 6-3 by
Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, and on
Friday they fell 9-0 to Wayne State University at home.
Grand Valley State Lakers
Grand Valley State is 13-10 on the season with a 7-2 mark in
GLIAC play…The Lakers played at Northwood on April 6th but
dropped the decision 6-3, although the team split all singles
matches over the 21st-ranked Timberwolves…The Lakers are now
out of action until the GLIAC Tournament begins on April 15th in
Midland, Mich.
Lake Erie Storm
In a match-up of teams gunning for their first conference victory, the Lake Erie College men's tennis team took the day's first match, but visiting Tiffin University won the next eight contests for an 8-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win on Tuesday (April 5) at the Mentor Heisley Racquet Club in Mentor. The Storm fell on the road Friday afternoon (April 8), losing to Lake Superior State University, 9-0, at the Arbuckle Student Activities Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Lake Erie then (1-11, 0-9 GLIAC) stumbled in its final GLIAC match of the season, falling to Michigan Tech University (9-7, 5-3 GLIAC), 9-0, at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton, Mich. Saturday. The Storm will close their Spring season on Sunday, April 17 when they host Edinboro University in a recently added non-conference match. Lake Erie won the first meeting between these teams in February, 7-2.
Lake Superior State Lakers
The Lakers finished out their
season at home against Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican. LSSU shutdown
Lake Erie, 9-0, ODU defeated the Lakers 5-4. Freshman Josh Houska
(Hastings, Minn.) won his first doubles match of his collegiate
career against Lake Erie, 8-3, with partner Jack Miller.
Michigan Tech Huskies
The Michigan Tech men’s
tennis team put together another win at Gates Tennis Center Friday
with a 6-3 decision over Ohio Dominican. Michigan Tech then won its
fifth men’s tennis match in a row Saturday at Gates Tennis
Center, sweeping Lake Erie 9-0. The Huskies did not surrender more
than four games at any flight in improving to 9-7 overall and 5-3
in GLIAC action. Michigan Tech will head Midland, Mich., next week.
The Huskies will make up a postponed match vs. Northwood on
Thursday (April 14) before taking part in the GLIAC Tournament
during the weekend.
Northwood Timberwolves
The No. 21 Northwood University
men's tennis team defeated Grand Valley State 6-3 Wednesday
afternoon. The Timberwolves' doubles came out and took control of
the match early, sweeping all three matches. The two teams then
split the six singles matches, with the Timberwolves winning at the
No. 1, 4 and 6 positions. Then Northwood earned a 5-2 victory
over Indianapolis Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds came out
strong in singles, earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to
take a 2-1 lead heading into singles. But that is when Northwood
took over – the Timberwolves won the first set in all six
matches and eventually won the top four flights in straight sets.
On Sunday the Timberwolves dropped a hard-fought 5-3 match to No.
16 Drury. The match was held at a neutral site in Indianapolis.
Northwood falls to 10-4 overall, while Drury improves to 12-2.
Northwood got off to a strong start, winning at the No. 2 and No. 3
doubles positions to lead 2-1 heading into singles. But Drury was
the better team in singles, earning victories at the top-four
flights to earn the win. Florian Boggia led the way for Northwood
on the day, going 2-0 overall. The Timberwolves will host Wayne
State Wednesday afternoon (April 13). . First serve is set for 2
p.m.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Ohio Dominican men's tennis
team earned their 3rd conference win of the season on Tuesday
afternoon, withstanding a strong fight from the University of
Findlay, holding on for the 6-3 win. The Panther’s men's
tennis team finished a long three days of travel with a hard fought
5-4 win over host Lake Superior State University on Saturday
morning. After a tough 6-3 loss on Friday afternooon to Michigan
Tech, ODU took 2-of-3 doubles and 3-of-6 singles to finish GLIAC
play with a 4-5 conference record. ODU will return to action on
Tuesday, April 12 as they will play host to Cedarville University
in a non-conference match with the Yellow Jackets. The match is set
to begin at 4 p.m.
Tiffin Dragons
Tiffin went 1-1 in matches against
Lake Erie and Wayne State. TU posted a 8-1 win at Lake Erie while
falling to the Warriors 8-1…Brian Coffman went 2-0 for the
week, posting straight set wins in both singles matches against the
Storm and Wayne State.
Wayne State Warriors
The 37th-ranked Wayne State
University men’s tennis team moved its record to 15-5 overall
and 7-1 in the GLIAC after winning three matches last week. The
Warriors started with a thrilling 6-3 triumph over Ferris State
last Tuesday. With the Warriors leading 4-3, a win from either
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador) or Melvin Joseph (Northville,
Mich.) in their No. 3 and No. 4 singles bouts, respectively, would
clinch the match. Both walked away with victories in three-set
tie-breakers. Joseph officially won it for the Warriors, defeating
Justin Hermes, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) before Gamarra capped his fourth
straight singles win with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Steven
Roberts. The achievement against the Bulldogs was followed by a 9-0
win at Findlay, and then an 8-1 victory at Tiffin. Despite
suffering a setback at No. 3 singles against the Dragons, Gamarra
has won five of his last six singles matches including his past six
No. 3 doubles matches with partner #Alec Attala# (Clinton Twp.,
Mich.). The GLIAC regular season championship will be on the line
when WSU visits Northwood University (10-4, 8-0 GLIAC) on Wednesday
at 2 p.m.
