Northwood Downs Wayne State, 5-1, in 2011 GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament Final
MIDLAND, Mich. - Northwood University claimed the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Tennis Tournament title by defeating Wayne State University, 5-1, on Sunday at the Midland Community Tennis Center. This marked the second consecutive year that the Timberwolves have downed the Warriors in the tournament final.

Northwood, ranked 21st nationally, had already claimed its 17th straight GLIAC Championhip by posting a perfect 9-0 mark during the regular season title, which included a 9-0 win over Wayne State earlier in the week.
The Timberwolves held a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition. The NU team of Antoine Pangaud and Valentin Bayle defeated WSU's Aman Gill and Melvin Joseph, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles, while NU's Marcus Oliveira and Marius Wahlier downed Wayne State's Thomas Ducret and Michael FitzGerald, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.
Wayne State's lone victory in the match came at No. 3 doubles where the team of Oscar Gamarra and Alec Attala defeated NU's Jean Menard and Florian Boggia, 8-6.
Northwood picked up singles wins at No. 3 where Menard took down FitzGerald, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 singles where Oliveira beat Joseph, 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 6 singles where Boggia defeated WSU's Eric Szydlowski, 6-3, 6-2.
The T-Wolves, who earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II tournament, improve to 15-4 on the season, while the Warriors drop to 17-7.
In the tournament's third-place match, Ferris State University downed Grand Valley State University, 5-1. Michigan Technological University claimed the fifth-place match with a 5-0 decision over Lake Superior State University, while the University of Findlay took the seventh-place match over Tiffin University, 5-1.
