Ferris State's Ahmet Demir Named GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University senior Ahmet Demir (Samsun, Turkey/Namik Kemal Lisesi) earned GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week."

Ferris State senior Ahmet Demir posted a combined 3-1 overall mark in two outings this past week for the 38th-ranked Bulldogs. Demir teamed up with freshman Arin Enge to record back-to-back doubles wins at the third flight against 15th-ranked Northwood and 39th-ranked Wayne State at home. He also split two singles matches, falling to NU’s Frederic Schoelzel before coming back to win a three-set tiebreaker versus Wayne State’s Britton Steele on Sunday in his final regular-season home match. Demir is currently ranked 14th in the latest ITA Division II Midwest Region Singles Rankings.

Ferris State Bulldogs (9-6, 5-1 GLIAC)
The Ferris State men’s tennis team split a pair of key league home matches this past week against nationally-ranked foes. The Bulldogs lost to 15th-ranked Northwood by a 6-3 score on Thursday (April 8) before coming back to defeat Wayne State by a 5-4 margin on Sunday (April 11) in their final regular-season home tilt.The Bulldogs, who are ranked 38th nationally in the Campbell’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II National Rankings, rallied back from a 2-1 deficit following doubles play to pull out the close win against the 39th-ranked Warriors. WSU entered the match tied for first place with Northwood (5-0) in the GLIAC standings and dropped into a second-place league tie with the Bulldogs by virtue of the setback. Both teams have one regular-season match left on the conference schedule. Ferris State is presently ranked fourth in the ITA Midwest Regional Rankings FSU’s regular-season finale match at Grand Valley State on Wednesday is scheduled for a 3 p.m. (ET) start time.
Findlay Oilers (4-7, 0-5 GLIAC)
The University of Findlay men’s tennis team fell 8-1 to Wayne State University on Wednesday, April 7 in Detroit, Michigan. Findlay men’s tennis team was defeated 7-2 by Lake Superior State University on Saturday, April 10 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.The University of Findlay men’s tennis team fell 8-1 to Michigan Technological University on Sunday, April 11 in Houghton, Michigan. The loss gives the Oilers a 4-7 record on the season with a 0-5 mark in the GLIAC. The Oilers will be back in action again on April 14 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to face Tiffin University at 3:00 p.m.
Grand Valley State Lakers (11-9, 3-3 GLIAC)
Grand Valley State went 1-2 in non-conference play last week, claiming an 8-1 win over Aquinas and defeats to Drury (8-1) and Rockhurst (5-2). The Lakers are now 11-9 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC action. Philipp Claus (Cloppenburg, Germany/Grand Ledge) is 19-7 overall at No. 2 singles, while Jeff Globerson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) is 17-6 in the No. 4 singles slot. The Lakers will return to GLIAC play when they host Ferris State on Wednesday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m.
Michigan Tech Huskies (8-8, 2-5 GLIAC)
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team evened its 2010 record at 8-8 with an 8-1 win over Findlay. The Huskies were just a few points at No. 6 singles away from gaining the sweep. Tech claimed wins at No. 2 through 5 singles all by straight sets—none of which were within a break. The two other singles matches were decided in third set super tiebreakers. Sophomore Luka Stupar gained a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 come-from-behind win at No. 1. Findlay scored its only point as Bryan Little topped Tim Viola 7-5, 5-7, 11-9 in a super tiebreaker. In doubles, the Huskies swept all three positions. David Heuer and Anders Sandholm improved to a team-best 9-5 in doubles with an 8-4 victory at No. 2. Michigan Tech has wrapped up its 2010 regular season and will play three matches in the GLIAC Tournament next weekend (April 17-18).
Lake Superior State Lakers (8-8, 4-3 GLIAC)
Collin Kuoppala (Iron Mountain, Mich.) ended his regular season play 3-0 at No. 6 doubles. Kuoppala defeated Findlay 6-2, 6-7, 11-9 and Tiffin 7-6, 6-1. Kuoppala and No. 3 doubles partner Jack Miller (Marquette, Mich.) defeated Tiffin 8-6. Sergiu Laza (Toronto, Ont.) was 2-0 at No. 2 singles over the weekend, defeating Findlay and Tiffin 6-2, 7-5. Laza and doubles partner Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) were 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, defeating Findlay 9-8 (6-4) and Tiffin 8-4.
Northwood Timberwolves (8-4, 5-0 GLIAC)
Northwood went 3-1 last week, earning key GLIAC victories over Grand Valley State (8-1) and Ferris State (6-3). The Timberwolves then defeated Rockhurst (6-3) before falling 5-4 to No. 20 Drury . NU is now 8-4 overall, 5-0 in the GLIAC. Frederic Schoelzel (Gevelsberg, Germany) led the way for the Timberwolves, going 7-1 overall (4-0 at No. 2 singles, 3-1 at No. 1 doubles). Max Dutois (Bourg-La-Reine, France) also had a big week in singles, going 4-0 at the No. 5 singles. Northwood will take on Wayne State and Findlay before starting the GLIAC Tournament this weekend.
Tiffin Dragons (5-12, 0-6 GLIAC)
Tiffin University dropped six close matches, falling to Lake Superior State 7-2. In doubles play, Luiz Carvalho/Andres Torres fell 5-8, Harry Smith/Leo Vladimirov fell 4-8, and Brian Coffman/Santiago Revelo lost 6-8. Torres won in singles play 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 while Coffman also won a close one 6-7, 6-4, 10-8. But TU had no luck in the other singles matches, as Carvalho fell 6-7, 1-6, Smith lost 2-6, 5-7, and Revelo fell 6-7, 1-6…Tiffin University got wins from Brian Coffman in singles plus a doubles victory, ultimately falling 7-2 at Michigan Tech. Coffman won 6-2, 7-5 (7-5) while Luiz Carvalho/Andres Torres won 8-6. Leo Vladimirov fell in singles play 0-6, 5-7, while TU’s other singles matches were also straight set losses…Tiffin University dominated singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets in an 8-1 win over Lake Erie. Harry Smith, Andres Torres, Leonid Vladimirov, Brian Coffman, Santiago Revelo, and Preston Torbet won in strong fashion, while Bryan Heisler/.Ryan Toporowsky won 8-1 and Coffman/Revelo won 8-0 in doubles play.
Wayne State Warriors (13-6, 5-1 GLIAC)
The Wayne State men’s tennis team split a pair of GLIAC matches this week to move its record to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference. On Wednesday, the Warriors hosted Findlay and defeated the Oilers 8-1. However, WSU was unable to keep its perfect GLIAC record intact over the weekend as Ferris State earned a 5-4 decision over Wayne State. Thomas Ducret led the Warriors this week with a perfect 2-0 record in singles and doubles play. At 13-5, Ducret is one of two WSU freshmen to win at least 10 singles matches this season; Jon Groszek (10-3) is the other. Bertrand Moulin also won a pair of singles matches from the first flight to improve his record to 19-3 overall and increase his winning streak to 10 matches. Wayne State, which is ranked No. 5 in the Midwest Region and No. 39 in all of Division II by the ITA, will conclude its regular season today vs. Northwood.
