Northwood Downs Wayne State, 5-0, in GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament Championship Match

MIDLAND, Mich. - Northwood University defeated Wayne State University by the score of 5-0 in the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's tennis tournament championship match on Sunday.

The No. 15 Northwood University men's tennis team claimed the 2010 GLIAC Tournament Championship with a 5-0 win over Wayne State Sunday morning (April 18) at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

Northwood is now 13-4 overall on the season. Wayne State stands at 15-7 overall.

NU had already claimed their 16th straight GLIAC Championhip by winning the regular season title.

After losing all three doubles matches to Grand Valley State in the semifinals, Northwood bounced back against Wayne State in the finals. The Timberwolves swept doubles today, giving them a 3-0 lead heading into singles. Northwood dropped all three doubles matches to the Warriors Tuesday in the two team's regular season match.

Up 3-0, Northwood only needed to win two of six singles matches to claim the title. The Timberwolves took care of business quickly, winning a pair of contests in straight sets. Frederic Schoelzel earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position to make the score 4-0. Julian Freese then clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 slot.

In the tournament's third-place match, Ferris State University downed Grand Valley State University, 5-2.  Michigan Technological University claimed the fifth-place match with a 5-2 decision over Lake Superior State University, while the University of Findlay took the seventh-place match over Tiffin University, 5-3.
