BAY CITY, Mich.- Northwood University junior Peter Kazianschuetz (Gnas, Austria) was named the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men’s tennis “Player of the Year” by the league’s head coaches in all-conference balloting. He becomes the first GLIAC men’s tennis student-athlete to earn “Player of the Year” accolades three times.
The coaches named Lake Superior
State University rookie Sergiu Laza (Toronto,
Ont.) the conference’s “Freshman of the
Year,” while Bryan Morrow, head coach of
Wayne State University's men’s tennis team, was tabbed the
“Coach of the Year.”
Kazianschuetz led Northwood to its 16th straight GLIAC
Championship this season, playing at both the No. 1 singles and No.
1 doubles position. Over his career, Kazianschuetz has gone
31-7 in conference play, posting a 15-3 record in singles and a
16-4 mark in doubles. Overall, he has posted an 87-30 career
record. Kazianschuetz has been nationally ranked in both
singles and doubles for the majority of his career, including his
current ranking of No. 45 in singles and No. 22 in doubles with
partner Frederic Schoelzel.
Laza ended his freshman season 13-6 overall and 6-1 in
the GLIAC at No. 2 singles. Laza was on a five-match winning streak
as he went 9-1 in his last 10 singles matches, leading the Lakers
in singles wins this season. Laza played most of his doubles
matches at No. 3 with sophomore Travis Toth. Laza and Toth ended
10-3 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC, with an eight-match win streak.
During the GLIAC Tournament, he was 2-0 in singles and 2-1 in
doubles.
Morrow, in just his second season, guided Wayne State to
one of its best seasons in recent memory. After winning just six
matches in 2009, Morrow coached the Warriors to a nine-match
improvement in 2010. He led WSU to a second-place showing at the
2010 GLIAC Tournament; which was Wayne State’s best finish at
the event since 1992. WSU’s 15 wins are the most since the
2004 season and Morrow’s first full recruiting class produced
a singles record of 36-18.
Joining Kazinaschuetz and Laza on the 2010 All-GLIAC first team are: sophomore Kyle Collette of the University of Findlay; sophomore Razvan Mag of Lake Superior State; sophomore Marc Roesslein of Grand Valley State University; sophomore Bertrand Moulin of Wayne State; senior Kyle Revall of Ferris State University; senior Frederic Schoelzel of Northwood; and sophomore Luka Stupar of Michigan Technological University.
