Ashland University's Adam Spannbauer Named GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University goal keeper Adam Spannbauer (Akron, Ohio/Firestone) earned GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after notching his third career hat trick in a 6-0 triumph over Findlay on Sunday that sent the Eagles to their third straight regular season GLIAC Championship.

Ashland senior Adam Spannbauer
notched his third career hat trick in a 6-0 triumph over Findlay on
Sunday that sent the Eagles to their third straight regular season
GLIAC Championship. He now ranks fifth all-time in AU history with
23 career goals. The senior has five goals this season with a
career-high three assists. Spannbauer helped the Eagles go from an
0-17-1 season in 2007 to three consecutive league titles and likely
three straight NCAA playoff berths.

Eagles
The Eagles went 1-1 this week,
falling to Tiffin (2-1) on Friday, then beating Findlay (6-0) on
Sunday in the regular season finale. The win over the Oilers gave
the Eagles their third straight regular season conference title.
The loss to Tiffin was Ashland’s first conference regular
season loss since Oct. 17, 2008, when Ashland fell at Northwood. It
was the first home conference loss in the regular season since Oct.
27, 2007. The Eagles were unbeaten in 21 straight conference games
prior to Friday. Senior Adam Spannbauer (Akron, Ohio/Firestone)
scored three goals against Findlay for his third career hat trick.
He now ranks fifth in AU history in career goals with 23. David
Jameyson (Medina, Ohio/Highland), Alex Johnson (Milford Center,
Ohio/Fairbanks), Andrew Iden (Marysville, Ohio) and Louis Clark
(Brighton, England/Hove Park) also scored goals this week.
Sunday’s clean sheet against Findlay was Ashland’s
ninth of the season. The Eagles host Northwood on Thursday night at
7:30 p.m. in GLIAC tournament semifinals.
Findlay Oilers
The Oilers went 2-1 last week. They defeated St. Joseph’s 1-0, won 2-1 in double overtime against Lake Erie and lost 6-0 at Ashland. Senior Joey Gogolin scored all three goals for the Oilers during the week. He had two game-winning goals. His second goal against Lake Erie came with only 36 seconds remaining on the clock. On the year, Gogolin has scored a team-high five goals.
Lake Erie Storm
The Storm played two home matches this week, falling to Findlay 2-1 and Tiffin 4-0. The Findlay match was a hearbreaker as Lake Erie was 36 seconds away from getting its first GLIAC result before the Oilers headed home the game winner in double overtime. Lake Erie scored in the match in the 30th minute when senior Justin Mihaly (Lowellville, Ohio/Ursuline) scored his second goal of the season off a cross from junior forward Marco Gaudio (Cambridge, England/Impington Village College). Honoring seven seniors on Sunday, Lake Erie could not get anything going offensively. It was the first conference game the Storm dropped by more than two goals this season. Sophomore Ricky Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy), the Division II leader in saves, made 10 stops on the day. Carreira finished the season with 168 saves, the second most in Lake Erie history for a single season.
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood went 0-1-1 last week, playing to a 2-2 draw at Urbana before dropping a 3-0 contest at Ohio Dominican. NU finished the regular season with a 7-6-4 overall record. Keith Lough (Edinburgh, Scotland) netted both of the Timberwolves’ goals at Urbana. He now has scored a team-leading seven goals Lough has scored five of his seven goals over Northwood’s last five games. The Timberwolves will be the fourth seed in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament. NU will face top-seeded Ashland Thursday night (November 4). The Timberwolves played two close games against the Eagles this season, losing 2-1 at AU before playing to a 1-1 draw at Northwood.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers concluded the final
weekend of the regular season on a high note, shutting out
Northwood 3-0 at home on Sunday in their annual Senior Day game.
ODU made to sure the seven seniors received a proper send-off,
scoring three first half goals to take control of the match. With
the win, the Panthers earned a split of their two home games last
week after falling to No. 8 Northern Kentucky 2-1 on Wednesday
afternoon. As the No. 2 seed in the upcoming four-team GLIAC
tournament, the men will square off against third-seeded Tiffin at
5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4 at top-seeded Ashland’s Ferguson
Field. The Panthers went 1-0-1 against the Dragons in the regular
season.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley men’s soccer team defeated Urbana (1-0) on Saturday (Oct. 30) in its final match of the season. Freshman Zach Walega scored the only goal of the contest off a pass from Josh Stenback. Goaltender Piotr Kamzmierczak ended the day with two saves, recording a shutout in the final game of his collegiate career. The Cardinals ended the season scoring 23 goals for a 12.3 shot percentage.
Tiffin Dragons
Tiffin University avenged an
earlier season loss at home against 16th-ranked Ashland, beating
the Eagles in Ashland 2-1 in a thrilling game. TU tied the game
when the GLIAC’s leading scorer, junior Ashton Campbell, took
a through ball from junior Michael O’Neill down the middle
and drilled the goal from 18 yards out into the top right corner.
Tiffin’s freshman Edison Benda put the Dragons ahead in the
71st minute, taking a cross into the box from freshman Ryan
Johnstone and heading it home to the bottom left corner for the
game-winning goal. Senior Jeff Frisch got the win in goal, making 2
saves over 90 minutes. Tiffin University enjoyed their 9th
straight game without a loss, blasting past Lake Erie 4-0 in their
regular season finale. TU tallied two goals in each half. Freshman
Pierre De Pauw got TU on the board in the 12th minute, blasting
home a point blank shot off a cross from Ashton Campbell for a 1-0
lead. Senior Rhys Cannella struck from 8 yards out off a Michael
O’Neill cross in the 20th minute to give TU a 2-0 halftime
edge. The Dragons got their final two goals in an 8 minute span
midway through the second half. Campbell scored from 5 yards out on
a pass from sophomore Stefan Mariano in the 71st minute, and senior
Jesse Burke got an unassisted goal in the 79th minute off a Lake
Erie turnover. The Dragons dominated play throughout, outshooting
the Storm 33-7 with 15 shots on goal, and holding a 9-1 edge in
corner kicks. Jeff Frisch and sophomore Scott Felgar combined in
goal for the shutout.
