Ashland's Dan Gilmer Named GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University senior defenseman Dan Gilmer (Ashland, Ohio/Urbana) earned GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" award of the 2009 season after leading the Eagles to a pair of victories last week, including a game-winning goal.

Senior Dan Gilmer scored the game-winning goal against Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 25) in a 1-0 victory. It was Gilmer’s first goal of the season and third of his career at Ashland. Gilmer has been part of a stellar Ashland defense that has allowed only nine goals on the season. In games that he has started, the Eagles have only allowed six goals. The defenseman has three goals in his career and all are game-winning goals.

Ashland
Eagles (10-2-5, 6-0-2 GLIAC)
The Eagles won both of their GLIAC contests this past weekend to propel themselves to a GLIAC Championship. Ashland improved to 10-2-5 overall and 6-0-2 in the GLIAC. AU won at Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 23), 2-1, and at Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 25), 1-0. Senior Ross Ashley scored his eighth goal of the season at TU. Senior Dan Gilmer scored his first goal of the season at Findlay. Senior goalkeeper Blaize Lishewski earned his 10th shutout of the season at Findlay. Ashland finishes its regular season at Davis & Elkins on Friday (Oct. 30).
Findlay Oilers (7-8-1, 2-5-0 GLIAC)
The University of Findlay men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Ashland University on Sunday, October 25 at DeHaven Field. The loss gives the Oilers a 7-8-1 record on the season with a 2-5 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Ashland held a 16-8 advantage in the shot department and got a first half goal from Dan Gilmer in the game. Matthew Brooks made six saves in the net for the Oilers. The Oilers will be back in action again on October 28 when they face Mountain State University in Beckley, West Virginia at 3:00 p.m.
Northwood Timberwolves (5-7-2, 2-3-2 GLIAC)
The Northwood Men’s Soccer team did not play last week … the Timberwolves return to action Tuesday at Wisconson-Whitewater Tuesday afternoon.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (5-10-3, 1-5-1
GLIAC)
The Saginaw Valley State University men’s soccer team tied Ohio Dominican 0-0 (Oct. 24) in double overtime. The Cardinal defense and goaltender Piotr Kazmierczak held Ohio Dominican to 13 shots, four of which were on goal. Freshman Zachary Myers led the Saginaw Valley offense with four shots on goal. SVSU defeated Davenport 2-1 (Oct. 25). The Cardinals fell behind in the 28th minute of the game and would not be able to find the back of the net in the first half. Junior Anthony Palazzolo would find the net in the 55th minute of the game to knot the score at one. In the 69th minute of the game senior Kevin Fox would score off a pass from senior Collin Selahowski to give Saginaw Valley a 2-1 lead over Davenport.
Tiffin Dragons (10-4-1, 4-2-1 GLIAC)
Tiffin University scored the first goal of the game and enjoyed a 1-0 halftime lead, but couldn’t answer Mercyhurst College’s two goals in the second half as they fell 2-1 at home. The Dragons scored their goal in the 15th minute when Rhys Cannella headed in a pass from Roger Kummer…Jeff Frisch played 90 minutes in goal for the Dragons. He made one save…Tiffin University dropped a tough game to Ashland University 2-1 in a big GLIAC matchup. TU tied the game in the 55th minute when Tony Iyayi headed in Paul Brodnick’s free kick…The Dragons outshot Ashland 16-10. The Dragons also held a 11-2 advantage on corner kicks…Jeff Frisch played 90 minutes in goal, making three saves.
