Tiffin's Ashton Campbell Garners Second GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" Award This Season

BAY CITY, Mich. - Tiffin University sophomore forward Ashton Campbell (Luton, England) earned his second GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" award after leading the Dragons to a 2-0 week.

Sophomore forward Ashton Campbell led Tiffin to a 2-0 week by recording three goals in the two matches. In a 3-0 GLIAC win over Findlay, Campbell scored two insurance goals in the final two minutes of play. At Lake Erie, Campbell had the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory. He currently ranks second in the GLIAC in points (27), points per game (1.69), goals (11), and is tied for second in assists (5).

Ashland Eagles (11-2-5, 6-0-2 GLIAC)

Ashland went 1-0-0 this past week as they beat Davis & Elkins on Friday (Oct. 30), 1-0. The win improved the Eagles to 11-2-5 on the season. AU received the lone goal in the contest from sophomore Andrew Iden. Freshman Mitch Deyhle assisted on the goal. Senior Blaize Lishewski made five saves while earning her 11th shutout of the season. The shutout lowered his conference-leader 0.35 goals against average. He has only allowed six goals on the year and has a .898 saves percentage. Ashland is a perfect 9-0-0 on the road when Lishewski starts the game as the keeper. The Eagles next compete in the GLIAC tournament on Thursday (Nov. 4) at Tiffin.

 

Findlay Oilers (8-9-1, 2-6-0 GLIAC)

The University of Findlay men’s soccer team opened the week with a 4-2 victory over Mountain State University (Oct. 28) in Beckley, West Virginia... B.J. Goodwin scored the first goal off of an assist by Mate Farkas early in the first half. In the second half, the Oilers got three goals as Kyle Wright assisted on goals from Corey Keister and Dan Stelletell. Brennan Williams also added a goal later in the second period... UF fell 3-0 to Tiffin University (Oct. 31) in Tiffin, Ohio. The loss gives the Oilers an 8-9-1 record on the season with a 2-5 mark in the GLIAC... Conrad Davenport made nine saves in the net for the Oilers and allowed all three goals.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (6-8-2, 3-3-2 GLIAC)

The Northwood University men’s soccer team posted a comback 3-2 victory over Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon (October 31) ... Northwood finishes the regular season 6-8-2 overall, 3-3-2 in the GLIAC ... the first half saw Saginaw Valley score on both of their shots on goal, giving them a 2-0 lead at the break ... SVSU finished with a 4-2 shot advantage and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes ... the second half was a completely different story, as Northwood netted three unanswered goals for the victory ... Steve Hufstader (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) netted NU’s first goal of the day at 49:38, followed by a score by Keith Lough (Edinburgh, Scotland) at 49:38 with an assist by Matt Miller (Brighton, Mich.) ... Northwood then scored what proved to be the game-winner less than a minute later when Ross Aitchison (Berwick, Scotland) netted an unassisted goal at 60:12 ... NU out-shot the Cardinals 11-3 in the final half to finish with a 13-7 edge for the contest ... the Timberwolves will travel to Tiffin for the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (5-11-3, 1-6-1 GLIAC)

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s soccer team lost today (Oct. 31) to Northwood, 3-2 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up on senior day. The Cardinals got on the board first in the 21st minute of the games when Kevin Fox found the back of the net on a pass from Zachary Myers. Saginaw Valley would extend the lead to two going into the second half when Andy Burgeson netted a goal off a pass from Mackenzie Bechard. The Cardinals would not be able to find the back of the net again in the game, while Northwood would score three goals in the second half to give them the win. The 2009 SVSU men’s soccer season has now come to a conclusion. The Cardinals ended the season with a 5-11-3 overall season record and a 1-6-1 GLIAC record.

 

Tiffin Dragons (12-4-1, 5-2-1 GLIAC)

Ashton Campbell had 3 goals for the week over two games. In a 3-0 GLIAC win over Findlay, Campbell scored two insurance goals in the final two minutes of play. At Lake Erie, Campbell had the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory… Tiffin controlled play in a 3-0 win over Findlay on Senior Day. The Dragons, who outshot Findlay 16-10, got on the board in the 44th minute when Michael O’Neill took a pass from Rhys Cannella and drilled home a shot from 20 yards. The Dragons held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks, and put the game away in the 89th minute when Ashton Campbell scored on a pass from Matthew Moceri. Campbell added another goal in the 90th minute, taking a pass from Tyler Fabian and scoring after a 50 yard breakway. Jeff Frisch got the shutout in goal, making 5 saves…Tiffin University played a solid game at Lake Erie, winning 2-0. The Dragons outshot the Storm 16-10, with Jeff Frisch getting the shutout while making 4 saves. Campbell opened scoring in the 9th minute off a pass from Michael O’Neill for a 1-0 halftime lead. Rhys Cannella gave TU an insurance goal in the 60th minute, going 1-on-1 with the keeper after a long pass from Fabian.
