Findlay's Matt Jones Named GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. -
University of Findlay senior Matt Jones (Norwalk, Ohio) was named
the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's
golf "Athlete of the Week" after finishing first in the Lake Erie
College Invitational held at Madison County Country Club.

Matt Jones - University of Findlay

University of Findlay senior Matt
Jones was the tournament medalist at the Lake Erie College
Invitational held at Madison County Country Club. Jones earned the
first place finish by shooting a four over par 150 (74, 74). His
strong play helped guide the Oilers golf team to a first place
finish in the tournament. As a team the Oilers shot a 603 (303,
300) which edged out second place by one stroke.
Ashland - The Eagles were idle last week. They
will travel to Eagle Eye GC in East Lansing, Mich. on Friday and
Saturday (April 22-23) for the GLIAC Preview. AU is ranked sixth in
the latest NCAA East Region rankings.
Ferris State - Ferris State captured fifth place
by recording a three-round 937-team stroke total (+73) at the
seven-team Detroit Titans Invitational last weekend (April 15-16),
which was conducted at the par 72, 7,142-yard Prestwick Village
Country Club in Highland, Mich. The Bulldogs, who registered
312, 317, and 308 rounds in the 54-hole event, were led by senior
Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) and freshman Trent Davison
(Rockford). Simons tied for 10th-place honors with a 229
score (76-76-77=229, +13) while Davison’s 230-stroke total
(77-80-73=230, +14) proved worthy of a 12th-place tie. Garrett
Simons’ 229 score (76-76-77=229) at the Detroit Titans
Invitational (April 15-16) matched a season-best three-round total
set previously at the GLIAC Championships (Oct. 3-4) in which he
carded an 18th-place tying 229-stroke total (76-77-76-229). The
Bulldogs will participate in the 18-hole GLIAC Preview Tournament
this Saturday (April 23) at the Eagle Eye Golf Course in Lansing,
Mich.
Findlay - The University of Findlay men’s
golf team took first place at the Lake Erie College Invitational on
Sunday, April 17 at the Madison Country Club in Madison, Ohio. The
Oilers shot a two-round score of 603 (303, 300) to edge Wayne State
University (305, 299 – 304) for top honors. Individually,
Matt Jones captured first place after shooting a four-over par
score of 146 (72, 74). Michael Schmitmeyer (76, 74 – 150) and
Jeff Mocini (74, 79 – 153) also placed in the top-ten, taking
sixth and tenth, respectively, at the event. Joe McGeean (81, 74
– 155), Logan Cooke (79, 76 – 155), Marcus Hunt (81, 78
– 159), Kyle Nickson (81, 83 – 164) and Justin Watren
(84, 81 – 165) also competed for Findlay at the event.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State was not
in action this past weekend. The Lakers next compete at the GLIAC
Preview in Lansing, Mich. this Saturday (Apr. 23).
Lake Erie Storm - The Storm finished ninth
at its own Spring Invitational this weekend (April 16-17) at
Madison Country Club. Senior C.J. Milo led LEC with a tie for
10th place individually, shooting 74-79-153. He was the only Storm
golfer to finish in the top 20. Sophomore Mike Guarino tied
with three others for 29th (158) in the 77-player field.
Lake Superior State - Lake Superior State was seventh among 13 teams after Saturday’s first round and wound up 10th Sunday at the Lake Erie College Spring Invitational. Freshman Brandon Vizina (Indian River, Mich.) shot a 74-86—160 to tie for 36th and lead the Lakers. Sophomores Mike Caputo (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Brent Vizina (Indian River, Mich.) tied for 42nd with 161s. Brent Vizina has the Lakers’ low average of 79.7, while his brother, Brandon, is second at 80.1. LSSU competes in the GLIAC Preview Tournament April 22-23 in Big Rapids, Mich.
Northern Michigan - Northern Michigan had the
week off. The ‘Cats compete at the GLIAC Preview meet in East
Lansing this weekend.
Northwood - The Northwood University men’s golf team earned a fifth place finish out of 12 teams at the Lake Erie Spring Invitational Sunday afternoon (April 17). The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Madison Country Club, which played as a 6,487 yard par 71. Northwood shot team scores of 314 and 307 to finish at 621. Findlay was the overall winner at 603, followed by Wayne State at 604. NU was three strokes behind third-place Saginaw Valley State (618). Leading the way for Northwood was Ron Bonatz (Northville, Mich./Oakland CC). Competing as an individual, Bonatz carded rounds of 73 and 76 to tie for fourth out of 77 players. Matt Ostby (Mt. Morris, Mich./Mott CC) and Grant Peffer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./MSU) both tied for 12th overall with a two-day total of 154. Northwood will compete at the GLIAC Preview Tournament April 23.
Ohio Dominican Panthers - Led by a final round 75
from sophomore Tyler Sebert (Grove City, Ohio), the Panthers closed
the Lake Erie Spring Invitational at Madison Country Club in ninth
place with a two-day total of 645. The Panthers shot a 331 on the
first day and followed with a 314 on day two, the fifth-best score
of the round. Sebert finished in a tie for 16th with a two-day
total of 155 (80-75), and was followed by junior Ben Calvert
(Franklin, Ohio), who placed in a tie for 29th with a 158 (81-77).
Solid second day efforts were turned in by sophomore Kevin Hartoin
(Cincinnati, Ohio), who shot an 80 on Sunday, and freshman Alex
Nikias (Cincinnati, Ohio), who recorded an 82. Junior Gary Wright
(Warsaw, Ohio) shot an 83 on Saturday to help the Panthers as well.
Calvert found success on the par-3’s over the weekend,
finishing tied for seventh in scoring (+2). Sebert tied for the
fifth-best mark on par-4’s with his +5, and ODU made the
fifth-most pars of any school on the weekend with 84.The Panthers
close the season at the Cedarville Invitational, which takes place
April 25-26 at the Beavercreek Golf Club.
Saginaw Valley State
- The Saginaw Valley State University men’s golf
team finished in third place over the weekend at the Lake Erie
College Spring Invitational, which was held at the Par 71 - 6,487
yard Madison Country Club. The Cardinals shot a first round 311 and
were eight strokes back of tournament leader Findlay, which shot a
303, followed by Wayne State with a 305. SVSU followed that
round with a 307 on day two, finishing with a two-day total of 618,
15 strokes off the pace. Findlay held on to shoot a 603 total
to claim the tournament by one stroke over Wayne State, which shot
a second round 299. Nate Kelly (Suttons Bay, Mich.) was the top
finisher for SVSU, posting a 147 (+5) to fall one stroke shy of
individual medalist Matt Jones of Findlay. Adam Hansen
(Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) finished in a tie for 23rd
place after tallying a 156 (+14) in the event. Eric Gandy
(Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) shot a 157 (+15) to tie for 26th
and Mike Horn (Clarkston, Mich.) fired a 158 (+16) to finish in a
tie for 29th. The Cardinals will be back in action on April 23,
when they compete in the GLIAC Preview Tournament, which will be
hosted by Ferris State University at the Katke Golf Course in Big
Rapids, Mich.
Tiffin - Team/Individual Notes: Tiffin
improved seven strokes on the final day to finish with a 619 (+51)
for the weekend (April 16-17) at the Lake Erie Spring Invite, just
a stroke behind Saginaw Valley State and 16 strokes behind winner
Findlay. The Dragons look to hold on to the final spot in the
Midwest Regional Rankings, which will be released Thursday (April
21). Every Tiffin golfer finished in the top half of the field.
Leading the way was Dillon Klein, who finished tied for seventh
with a two-day total of 152 (+10), bettering his second day score
by four strokes. The highest TU golfer after day one, James Bell
finished tied for 16th with a +13 (155) for the tournament. Blake
DeBruyn was just two strokes behind Bell and finished tied for
26th. Rounding out the field for the Dragons was Jason Crow tied
for 33rd (159, + 17) and Tom Conway (160, + 18) tied for 36th.
Wayne State - In its final competition of the
season before the field for the NCAA Super Regional is selected,
Wayne State finished in second place at the Lake Erie
Invitational. The Warriors (305-299—604) turned in the
lowest team score of the tournament Sunday, but finished one stroke
behind Findlay (303-300—603). Steve Fedewa shot a
tournament-low 70 in the second round and placed third (148), two
strokes off the pace of medalist Matt Jones of Findlay (146).
Jack Mitroka was a shot back from Fedewa in a tie for fourth
(74-75—149), and Hagan Risner shot 76 in both rounds to tie
for seventh. The Warriors will await the announcement of the
field for the NCAA Super Regional, which will be held May 2-4 at
Cherry Blossom in Georgetown, Ky.
