Wayne State's Aaron Peterson Named GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University sophomore Aaron Peterson  (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after he won a nine-hole sudden-death playoff to claim medalist honors as WSU finished second overall at the Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament.

Sophomore Aaron Peterson won a nine-hole sudden death playoff to claim medalist honors as WSU finished second overall at the Kyle Ryman Memorial, hosted by Tiffin University at Mohawk Golf and Country Club. Peterson shot 73 in Sunday’s opening round and 71 on Monday to tie Torrey Brummett of Owens Community College.  Peterson edged Brummett in the playoff to earn his third victory of the season and first of the spring. The win came just two days after a ninth-place finish (79-76—155) at the Findlay Invitational, which concluded Saturday.

Ashland - The AU men’s golf team finished eighth on Saturday (Apr. 17) at the Findlay Spring Invitational.  The Friday-Saturday tournament consisted of 12 teams with Grand Valley State taking the top sport.  Ferris State finished in second and Saginaw Valley State ended in third.  The top performers for Ashland on the day were Jay Overy and Ted Brink.  Overy finished in a tie for 16th at +14 and Brink finished in a tie for 27th at +18.  On Monday (Apr. 19), the Eagles finished seventh at the Kyle Ryman Memorial at Tiffin University.  Brink was the top player for the Eagles as he shot 152 on the two-day tournament.   Overy was the second-best Eagle as he shot 155.


Ferris State - For the third time in a row, the FSU men's golf team earned second-place honors in a tournament as the Bulldogs produced a two-round 50-over par 626 team score at the Findlay Invitational  (April 16-17) in Findlay, Ohio... The Bulldogs opened play with a 316-stroke total in Friday's (April 16) play before firing a tourney second-round best 310 score to garner runner-up honors.  Grand Valley State won the tournament by tallying a 616 score (+40) on the par 72, 7,155-yard Red Hawk Run Golf Club Course... Tops among FSU's golfers was senior Craig Burrows (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Olmstead Falls), who fired a 154 (81-73=154, +10) to tie for seventh place.  Senior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) and junior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) both tied for 13th place as a result of producing 157 scores.  Valley (78-79=157, +13) and Simons (81-76=157, +13) shared the placing with one other individual... Next action for Ferris State is April 24-25 at the Michigan State Fossum/Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.


Findlay - The UF men’s golf team tied for fourth place at the Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament in Tiffin, Ohio with a score of 614... They were led by Michael Schmitmeyer who finished third after carding a 145 (73, 72)... Joe McGeean (72, 79 – 151), Justin Watren (81, 72 – 153), Jeff Mocini (80, 79 – 159), Kyle Nickson (79, 83 – 162) and Matt Jones (83, 80 – 163) also competed for Findlay at the event... UF tied for fifth place with Wayne State University on Saturday, April 17 at the Findlay Invitational, which was hosted at the Red Hawk Run Golf Course. The Oilers shot a 317 on the second day to better their 323 showing in the first round and ended up with a two-day total of 640... Joe McGeean (76, 76 – 152) lost to Joe Juszczyk (79, 73 – 152) on the fourth playoff hole to take second place... Michael Schmitmeyer (77, 81 – 158), Jeff Mocini (84, 80 – 164), Matt Jones (77, 87 – 164), Kyle Nickson (86, 80 – 166) and Justin Watren (86, 81 – 167) also competed for Findlay at the event.


Grand Valley State - GVSU captured a 10-stroke victory at the Findlay Spring Invitational over the weekend, as all five Laker golfers placed in the top-20. GVSU continued its strong play recently, as the Lakers had finished fourth in the last four tournaments and finally broke through for the team title on Saturday in Findlay, Ohio…sophomores Travis Shooks (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Nick Gunthorpe (Lansing, Mich.) tied for fourth place with a score of 153 (+9) for the weekend. Shooks led the tournament after day one with a 73 and his 80 on Saturday kept him in the top five, while Gunthorpe notched a 79 on Friday and rebounded with a day two 74 for his fourth place total…senior Matt Malloure (Farmington Hills, Mich.) also placed in the top-10 as he tied for ninth place with a 155 (+11). Malloure shot 74-81 for his tally, as he tied with three other golfers. Finishing in a tie for 13th place was freshman Chase Olsen (White Pigeon, Mich.), who shot 78-79 for a 157 (+13). Sophomore Mike Basinski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) rounded out the Laker five with a 159 (+15) after rounds of 80-79 to finish 18th…the Lakers compete again at the NCAA Super Regional on May 3-5.


Lake Superior State - LSSU closed out the men’s golf season by competing at the Findlay and Tiffin invitationals. Junior Sean Green (Mason, Mich.) shot the Lakers’ low score of 83-76—159 at Findlay on Friday and Saturday. Freshman Brent Vizina (Indian River, Mich.) had the low score of 78-86—164 at Tiffin during a tournament held Sunday and Monday. Freshman Sean Stubbs (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) had the Lakers’ low average for the year at 80.2. Vizina was second at 80.4, followed by Green at 80.7.


Northern Michigan University Northern Michigan - NMU had two golfers compete at the Kyle Ryman Memorial which Tiffin University was the host...Adam Huss shot a two-round total of 182 (94-88) as did teammate TJ Rose (92-90)...This week the Wildcats hit the links at the Fossum Invitational which will be held at Michigan State University.

 

 



Northwood - The Northwood University men's golf team finished eighth at the Kyle Ryman Memorial Monday afternoon (April 19)... The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Mohawk Golf & Country Club, which played as a par-72... Northwood shot team scores of 315 and 305 to finish at 620. Tiffin was the overall winner at 596, followed by Wayne State at 601... Kyle House (Lakeland, Mich./Pinckney) led the way for the T-Wolves. He shot rounds of 78 and 72 to tie for 8th overall... NU has now completed the regular season.

 

Saginaw Valley State University

Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU golf team finished in third place at the Tiffin University Kyle Ryman Memorial, held on April 18-19.  The Cardinals shot a total score of 613 (310-303) to finish in the third slot, 17 strokes behind tournament winner Tiffin University "A", which finished the two-round event with a 596... Dieter Schulz (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) was the top finisher for SVSU, carding rounds of 74-74, finishing in a tie for fifth place.  Schulz was named to the All-Tournament Team for his finish... SVSU finished in third place at the University of Findlay Spring Invitational, held at the par-72, 7155 yard Red Hawk Run Golf Club in Findlay, Ohio.  The Cardinals shot a two-day total of 632 (313-319), 16 strokes behind tournament winner GVSU... Dieter Schulz was the top finisher for SVSU, shooting rounds of 75-79 to finish in a tie for seventh place. 


Tiffin - TU men’s golf team shot its best two-day total of the season, firing a 596 to capture the Kyle Ryman Memorial by 5 strokes over Wayne State. The Dragons B squad finished 6th overall out of 14 teams with 616. TU’s Dillon Klein made the All-Tournament team while Corey Martinez also earned All-Tourney selection. TU’s A squad showed great consistency, firing identical rounds of 298 to secure the win. The Dragons led after both rounds, with Klein leading the way with 71-75-146 while Martinez shot 75-73-148. Only 10 strokes separated the top five Dragons, with Justin Epure shooting 76-75-151, Jon Klein hitting 77-75-152, and Jimmy Bell finishing with 76-80-156. For the B team, consistency was also key, as 10 strokes separated five more TU athletes. Jim Van Fleet shot 150, followed by Andy Kronander’s 153, Tom Conway’s 156, Spencer Schabel’s 158, and Phil Patten’s 160...Tiffin University’s men’s golf team shot identical rounds at the Findlay Invitational, hitting 329 each round to finish 9th of 12 teams with 658. James Bell was the top Dragons finisher in 21st place, shooting 79-81-160. Dillon Klein and Corey Martinez tied with 166 each, while Justin Epure fired 168 anmd Andy Kronander had 173.

 

Wayne State University Wayne State - WSU boasted medalists in both the Findlay and Tiffin Invitationals this past week.  Senior Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Hts, Mich./Divine Child) won a four-hole playoff to claim medalist honors at Findlay on Saturday, while sophomore Aaron Peterson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) emerged victorious from a nine-hole playoff on Monday to win at Tiffin.  Overall, WSU tied for fifth in the Findlay Invitational and finished second to the host Dragons at the Tiffin Invite.  With its spring season complete, Wayne State will now await the announcement of the field for the NCAA Super Regional, to be held May 3-5 at Territory in Duncan, Oklahoma.  The Warriors were ranked second in the latest NCAA regional poll released released last Friday.
