Wayne State Men's Golf Wins NCAA Super Regional

Cuzzort becomes second straight Warrior to earn medalist honors

ALLENDALE, Mich. - For the first time in school history, the Wayne State University golf team finished in first place at the NCAA Midwest/South Central Super Regional. The Warriors shot 297 in Wednesday's final round at The Meadows for a three-day score of 859, six strokes ahead of Northeastern State (293--865).

With the victory, Wayne State has qualified for the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship, May 19-22 at Loomis Trail Golf Course in Blaine, Wash. It will be WSU's first team appearance at nationals.

Joining Wayne State and Northeastern State at the NCAA Championship will be Central Missouri State, which placed third (289--871), as well as Ferris State (297--875) and Indianapolis (295--875) who tied for fourth.

Wayne State also had an individual earn Super Regional medalist honors for the second straight year. Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile, Mich.) shot a one-under 70 to finish with a 54-hole score of 206, seven under par, to lead the 108-player field. His score came in two strokes under his school record of 208, set at the 2008 GLIAC Championship.

Cuzzort collected two birdies Wednesday, increasing his total to 11 for the tournament. He was one of three golfers to finish under par, along with Indy's Justin Hueber (-3) and CMSU's Justin Yoder (-2).

Chad Johnson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) tied for 15th (77--218) and Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child), last year's medalist, placed 23rd (75--219).

Hagan Risner (Garden City, Mich.) tied for 28th (79--221) and Michael Wouters (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) finished 94th (75--233).

NOTES
Wayne State's best previous finish at the Super Regional was third in 2005 ... as last year's medalist, Juszczyk was the first WSU golfer to go to nationals since current head coach Mike Horn in 1986 ... the Warriors benefitted greatly from their large two-day lead, as their score of 297 on Wednesday tied for 10th-best.
