LSSU's VanOudheusden and AU's Saunders Named GLIAC Men's Basketball North & South Division "Players of the Week," respectively

Bay City, Mich.-- Lake Superior State University senior forward Tim VanOudheusden (Grand Rapids, Mich./Baptist) and Ashland University sophomore forward Blake Saunders (Hinsdale, Ill./Sonoma State) were named GLIAC Men's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," respectively, by the Conference Office.

Lake Superior State University senior forward Tim VanOudheusden finished one point off his career high by scoring 28 points in a 91-89 overtime victory over Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday. He scored 10 points in the first half, 13 in the second half, and had five points, a rebound and a blocked shot in overtime. He also led the Lakers with 22 points during Saturday's 77-73 overtime loss to Lewis (Ill.). He averaged 25 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for the weekend.

Sophomore forward Blake Saunders played his first game as an Ashland Eagle this past Saturday in a 91-75 win over Ohio Dominican. Saunders dominated both sides of the court scoring 15 points, while tallying three assists and four offensive rebounds. On defense, Saunders grabbed 11 defensive rebounds to give him 15 total, while posting two steals. Saunders shot fantastic from the field going 7-of-12 for a .583 shooting percentage. Saunders is a transfer form from Sonoma State (Calif.) where he played last season.

Ashland - The Ashland University Eagles started off the season the right way by earning a 91-75 victory over Ohio Dominican University on Saturday (Nov. 15). The Eagles took the lead early fought off a run by the Panthers and pulled away just before halftime. Sophomore Blake Saunders led the Eagles with 15 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Saunders shot 7-of-12 from the field for a .583 shooting percentage. Redshirt sophomore Kale Richardson led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points he also added six rebounds. Senior Bret Wackerly also had 15 points. Ashland will continue to hold home court on Tuesday (Nov. 18) against Mount Vernon Nazarene at 7:30 p.m.

Ferris State - The Ferris State University men's basketball team gave nationally-ranked regional opponent Northern Kentucky all it could handle for much of the game before the Norse eventually pulled out a 72-57 non-league triumph over the Bulldogs in the official season opener for both teams Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon in Highland Heights, Ky... The Bulldogs trailed 38-27 at halftime despite shooting only 34% from the floor in the opening stanza and cut a 13-point deficit down to only four points with 8:45 to go in the game, but NKU was able to go on a 15-2 run to put the game away in the first-ever regular season contest played inside NKU's new state of the art Bank of Kentucky Center. A crowd of 2,477 was on hand in the nearly 10,000-seat facility... NKU, which suffered a hard-fought 84-69 home exhibition setback last Saturday (Nov. 8) to NCAA Division I Big East Conference member Louisville, entered the game ranked fourth nationally in the Division II Bulletin preseason poll along with sixth in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Top 25 Rankings. Ferris was not ranked, but listed second (number 27) among other teams receiving votes in the NABC poll... FSU led by seven points only 4:15 into the game before Northern Kentucky took the lead for good with 11 minutes to go in the opening half... Junior transfer guard Josh Young (Ypsilanti) paced the Bulldogs with 18 points, sophomore center Justin Keenan (Grand Rapids/Ottawa Hills) netted 16 points and sophomore guard Darien Gay (Detroit/Henry Ford) tallied 11 points for FSU... The win enabled the Norse to improve to 7-0 all-time against the Bulldogs... Ferris State returns home and will host another GLVC opponent in St. Joseph's (Ind.) in its home opener on Thursday, Nov. 20, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. (EST) inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich.

Findlay - The Oilers were idle last week.

Grand Valley State - Sophomore center Mike Przydzial scored a career-high 19 points for #15 Grand Valley State en route to a 77-65 season-opening win over Davenport (5-1) Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena before a crowd of 1,501. GVSU has now won 35 straight regular season games and 34 straight games in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena... GVSU jumped out to a 20-15 lead at the 11:43 mark of the first half, but Davenport clawed its way back and tied the game at 23-23 with 7:54 left in the opening 20 minutes. Davenport took a 26-23 lead on a Kyle Waaso three-pointer and built a 30-25 lead with 2:54 remaining in the fist stanza. However, sophomore K'Len Morris hit a pair of free throws, followed by a Morris layup to pull the Lakers within one (30-29). Freshman forward Nick West gave the Lakers a 31-30 lead, but the Panthers took a 32-31 lead on a tipin. Justin Ringler hit a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds left to give GVSU a 33-32 halftime lead... Sophomore center Toreau Brown scored in the paint to give the Lakers a 48-43 lead with 14:31 and Przydzial scored on a three-point play to up the Laker advantage to 51-43 with 14:01 left in the game. Przydzial hit a pair of free throws to give GVSU its first double-digit lead (54-43). The Lakers led by as many as 15 points (72-57) when Brown scored in the paint with 3:08 remaining in the game. Laker sophomore Anthony Ianni put the finishing touches on the win with the final points for GVSU with a bucket in final minute... Przydzial led GVSU with 19 points, including a 13-for-14 afternoon from the charity stripe. Morris added 13 points, while Ringler chipped in nine. Eight players scored five points or more for GVSU. Senior Jerret Smith dishd out a team-high five assistsThe Lakers shot 51.2 percent from the floor (21-for-41) and 80.6 percent from the charity stripe (29-for-36)... Grand Valley State will host Lake Erie College Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m.

Hillsdale - The Chargers were idle last week.

Lake Superior State - Lake Superior State finished 1-1 in back-to-back overtime games during the GLIAC vs. GLVC Challenge held Nov. 15-16 in Sault Ste. Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech won its season opener last Saturday (Nov. 15) vs. UW-Parkside. The Huskies are 11-3 in their last 14 season openers ... Senior Robby Springborn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) posted 21 points vs. Lewis last Sunday (Nov. 16). The effort was his eighth career 20-point game. Springborn leads the team in scoring through two games with a 16.5 average ... Freshman Mike Hojnacki (Milwaukee, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) averaged 7.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in his first two collegiate games last weekend. The 6-7 forward posted 10 points and five rebounds in his collegiate debut vs. UW-Parkside ... Michigan Tech will open its 2008-09 home schedule Friday (Nov. 21) vs. Alma. The Huskies have 14 home games on the schedule - the most regular season home games in the 88-year history of the program.

Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan University men's basketball team began the 2008-09 season with two wins over Northland Baptist (66-41) and UM-Duluth (79-74)...This week the Wildcats host Alma College on Saturday...Marc Renelique playing in his first two games for NM had 14 points against Northland Baptist and 25 against UM-Duluth...Against UM-Duluth four of the five starters were in double-figures, Renelique, Raymont McElroy (15), Tyler Kazmierkoski (17) and Kyle Greene (11)...Renelique went 10-21 from the three-point line over the weekend... Austin Rowe came off the bench against Northland Baptist to score 10 points as he was six-of-seven from the free throw line...Kyle Greene had 13 rebounds in the two games with eight coming against UM-Duluth.

Saginaw Valley State - The Cardinals were idle las week.

Tiffin - The Dragons were idle last week.

Wayne State - Wayne State began its 2008-09 campaign with an 89-59 win over NAIA opponent Marygrove College ... junior guard Bryan Wright (Warren, Ohio/Harding/Lakeland C.C.) made 11 of 12 from the foul line and finished with a game-high 24 points ... he also had a game-best three steals ... his free throw shooting performance was the best since Justin Chapman also made 11 of 12 vs. Ferris State on Jan. 5, 2002 ... senior center Shane Lawal (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup/Oakland University) made nine of 11 from the floor and finished with 20 points and eight rebounds ... freshman guard Reggie Stallings (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds including 10 on the defensive end ... seven of the eight players for WSU that saw action in the game recorded assists .. after playing Iowa in an exhibition contest on Nov. 9, the Warriors will play two regular-season games at Division I opponents (Nov. 20 at Bowling Green and Dec. 8 at Eastern Michigan).
