GLIAC Football Preview Notes - Week 1
BAY CITY, Mich. - Twelve of the 14 GLIAC
football teams will open the 2010 college football season this
weekend. And while there are a number of interesting non-league
clashes taking place, two will feature matchups of teams ranked in
the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25
poll.
This weekend’s first AFCA Top 25 clash featuring a GLIAC
team will take place Thursrday (Sept. 2) in Allendale, Michigan
when No. 2 Grand Valley State University welcomes No. 8 West Texas
A & M University. This will be the second meeting between the
two teams as the Lakers claimed a 37-23 victory in Texas in last
season's opener. This game will be the CBS College Sports "Division
II Game of the Week," airing live nationally on the satellite
station Thursday at 8:00 p.m. (EDT).
The other GLIAC-driven Top 25 matchup is another rematch from
Week 1 of 2009. No. 5 California University (Pa.) will look to
exact some revenge when the Vulcans visit University Center (Mich.)
for tilt against No. 11 Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday
(Noon). The Cardinals up-ended the higher-ranked Vulcans, 21-13, in
Pennsylvania, last season.
Two of this weekend's games feature GLIAC teams squaring off in
non-conference action. No. 16 Hilldale College will open the 2010
season with a rare Friday night game, hosting GLIAC rival Ferris
State University (7:00 p.m.). The Chagers downed the Bulldogs,
59-14 in Big Rapids (Mich.) last season. On Saturday, Northwood
University will travel to Detroit to face GLIAC foe Wayne State
University at Adams Field (Noon). The Timberwolves were able to
claim a 38-24 victory in Detroit in last season's matchup between
the two squads.
