GLIAC Football Preview Notes - Week 9

BAY CITY, Mich. - BAY CITY, Mich. - Week nine of the 2009 NCAA Division II football season finds Grand Valley State University alone in first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings.

The Lakers (7-1, 6-1 GLIAC) earned the top spot in the Conference standings by downing the University of Findlay, 38-13, last Saturday.  The Oilers (6-2, 5-2 GLIAC) entered that contest in a three-way tie for first place in the GLIAC.  Northern Michigan University (5-2, 5-2 GLIAC) was the third team tied for first place last week, but the Wildcats fell to Hillsdale College, 28-17, last week.  NMU now finds itself in a five-way tie for second place (5-2) in the league with Findlay, Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley State University and Wayne State University.

GVSU, which climbed to No. 6 in this week's AFCA Division II Poll, will try to stay in first place this weekend after a trip to Ashland, Ohio, to face the Eagles (1:00 p.m.).

Two games on this week's slate feature teams tied for second place in the GLIAC.  Northern Michigan will travel to Ohio to face-off with Findlay (12:00 p.m.), while Hillsdale, which jumped back into the AFCA Top 25 at No. 25 this week, welcomes Wayne State in a 2:30 p.m. contest.

The rest of the GLIAC Week 9 schedule features Saginaw Valley State visiting Michigan Technological University (1:00 p.m.), Ferris State University travelling to Northwood University (12:00 p.m.), and the University of Indianapolis hosting Tiffin University (6:00 p.m.).
