Ashland's Cundiff Named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University junior quarterback Billy Cundiff (Uniontown, Ohio/Conecticut) has been chosen as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Offensive Player of the Week it was announced today by the league office. Tiffin University linebacker Parris Burt (Flint, Mich./Northern) was selected Defensive Player of the Week, while Hillsdale College placekicker Mark Petro (Rocky River, Ohio/Lutheran West) earned Special Teams Player of the Week Honors.

Ashland junior QB Billy Cundiff completed 25-of-37 passes for 423 yards and five touchdowns in the Eagles' 48-41 win at Michigan Tech. The five TD passes ties his own school, single-game record he set last year against Wayne State. Cundiff had 434 yards of total offense, which set another school, single-game mark. His 423 yards passing was 17 yards shy of the AU single-game record for passing yards.

Tiffin senior linebacker Parris Burt posted 18 tackles (11 solo) with a forced funble and an interception in a 34-28 four-overtime triumph over Northern Michigan. He led a Dragons' defense that posted six sacks and 10 tackles-for-loss while forcing four turnovers (2 fumbles, 2 interceptions), and limited the NMU rushing attack (2nd in the GLIAC) to just 104 yards in the game. Burt currently leads the GLIAC in tackles averaging 15.3 per game.

Hillsdale College junior place kicker Mark Petro kicked a pair of field goals and was two-for-two in PAT attempets to help lead the Chargers to a 26-7 win over Northwood. His field goals of of 32 and 42 yards helped Hillsdle to build a 13-0 halftime lead. Petro currently ranks fourth in the GLIAC in scoring (9.0 ppg).

Ashland - The Eagles are averaging 38.0 ppg., and 467.7 ypg., in total offense...at Michigan Tech, junior quarterback Billy Cundiff (Uniontown, OH/Connecticut) set a school single-game mark for total offense (434 yards) and tied his own school single-game record for TD passes (5). Cundiff owned the previous record for total offense (425). Against Tech, Cundiff threw for 423 yards, that's 17 yards shy of the school record...senior linebacker Tom Brenner (Orrville, OH) picked off two passes and returned one for a score. That's the first time an AU player had two interceptions in a game since Brenner had a pair of thefts against Mercyhurst in 2005. Ashland didn't have an interception this season before Brenner's interceptions Saturday...junior tailback Dawon Harvey (Columbus, OH/Central State) had 314 all-purpose yards at MTU, that ties his career high. Harvey rushed for 149 yards, that's his first 100-yard day this year and the sixth of his career...Ashland is 0-2 at home this season after going undefeated at Community Stadium a year ago. AU plays Tiffin at home this coming week...sophomore wide receiver Joe Horn (Waynesfield, OH/Waynesfield-Goshen) caught 7 passes for 157 yards at MTU. He's the first AU wideout to surpass 150 yards receiving since David Ziegelhofer had 154 against Wayne State in 2007...AU has three players averaging more than 16.0 ypc. - Horn is at 22.4 ypc...junior Nick Bellanco (Wooster, OH) is good for 17.4 ypc., and senior Johnny Long (Cincinnati, OH/Akron) is averaging 16.2 ypc.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University football team pitched a shutout and redshirt freshman quarterback Tom Schneider (Jerome/Addison) ran for two first-half scores as the Bulldogs topped Findlay in a battle of unbeaten teams by a 14-0 count Saturday (Sept. 13) evening at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.... The victory came in the 2008 home opener for the Bulldogs, who improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC action this season with the win before a Community Health Care Night crowd of 2,773 fans that braved rainy and drizzly conditions throughout the game. The Oilers dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC with their first loss of the year... With the win, the Bulldogs are now one of only two undefeated teams in GLIAC play along with archrival Grand Valley State. Ferris will take on the Lakers next Saturday (Sept. 20) night at GVSU's Lubbers Stadium in Allendale as the two unbeaten squads square off in the the annual Anchor-Bone Classic starting at 7 p.m. (EDT).
Findlay - The Oilers suffered their first loss of the season at Ferris State, losing 14-0 to the Bulldogs...As a team, Findlay managed only 195 yards of total offense while the defense gave up 328 yards which included 292 on the ground... Junior linebacker Joe Knopick recorded a career-high 20 tackles in the Oilers 14-0 loss at Ferris State University...Knopick made ten solo stops and ten assisted tackles and now leads the team with 33 tackles on the season...Sophomore linebacker Brandon Craft chipped in eight tackles and forced a fumble...His two forced fumbles lead the Oilers on the season...Senior defensive lineman Mike Roach made seven stops and one tackle for a loss to run his season total to six tackles behind the line of scrimmage...Junior linebacker Jesse Kontras, who made 11 tackles in the loss, also has six stops behind the line on the season to share the team lead with Roach...Junior quarterback Anthony Lanzara has yet to throw an interception in Findlay's first three games, attempting 99 passes during the stretch.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State notched its first shutout since a 13-0 win at Findlay in the opening game of 2006...The Lakers' 36-0 shutout over Saginaw Valley State was the first time in series history that GVSU has shutout Saginaw Valley State...GVSU held Saginaw Valley State to four yards rushing and 101 yards of total offense. Prior to the Cardinals' last drive of the game Saginaw Valley State has -29 yards rushing and 29 yards of total offense on 37 plays...Sophomore running back James Berezik rushed for 117 yards and two TDs on 17 carries. Berezik has rushed for over 100 yards in both games this season and six in his career... The 2008 GVSU senior class is 42-1 with three two National Championships and three GLIACtitles. In addition, the 2008 senior class has never lost a regular season game (32-0) and is undefeated (30-0) in GLIAC action...Grand Valley State has won 34 consecutive regular season games. The Lakers' last regular season loss was 10/23/04 to Northwood (35-14)...Since 2001, the Lakers are 53-3 at home, 38-3 in their last 41 road games and 42-4 in all games away from Lubbers Stadium in their last 46...Grand Valley State is 65-3 in its last 68 GLIAC games. The Lakers have won a GLIACrecord record 33 straight GLIAC games dating back to the 2004 season. GVSU also held the previous record of 29 from 2001 - 2003...GVSU has been ranked in the AFCA top 25 in 99 straight polls.
Hillsdale - The Hillsdale College football team earned its first victory over Northwood University since the 2001 season with a 26-7 triumph Saturday afternoon...The humid conditions helped lead to seven total fumbles by the two teams...The Chargers are 12-2 in their last 14 games at home, dating back to Nov. 5, 2005...Junior linebacker Mat Szula set a school record Saturday with an 82-yard fumble return...He scooped up a loose ball at Hillsdale's two-yard-line and returned it to the Northwood 16-yard-line...Two plays later, the Chargers scored their third touchdown of the game, salting away the victory...Quarterback Troy Weatherhead had his first 300-yard passing game of his career, throwing for 308 yards and two touchdowns...Eight different players caught passes in the game for the Chargers...Running back Vinnie Panizzi had his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, after getting 99 and 95 yards on the ground in his first two games...Panizzi ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in the game...Four different players were in on sacks in the game for Hillsdale defensively...The seven points allowed by Hillsdale vs. Northwood are the fewest scored by the Timberwolves in the series since 1994...The win was the first for Hillsdale head coach Keith Otterbein as Chargers' coach vs. the Timberwolves.
Indianapolis - Craig Jenkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) notched his 10th career 100-yard rushing game and third against Wayne State ... the senior has run for 463 yards in three career games at Adams Field ... Jenkins moved into 9th place on the UIndy all-time rushing list (2,187 yds), moving past Donnie McCoy (2,063) ... UIndy was shutout for the first time since a 23-0 loss to Northwood in the 2006 season finale ... Craig Ray (Plainfiled, Ind.) has led the team in tackles in each of the first three contests, totaling 26 stops thus far this season ... Since joining NCAA Division II, UIndy has not played its first three games on the road to start a season until now.
Michigan Tech - Running back Phil Milbrath (Norway, Mich.) posted 172 yards and a career-high four touchdowns vs. Ashland last Saturday (Sept. 14). The 5-11, 200-pound sophomore has scored eight touchdowns in just three games this season for a GLIAC-leading 16.7 points per game ...Senior cornerback Robert Haynes (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) posted two interceptions in Tech's loss to Ashland. He now has a GLIAC-best three interceptions on the season ... Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) completed 16-of-27 passes for 200 yards and a touchdowns last Saturday. The junior co-captain leads the GLIAC in completion percentage at 69.2 ... Ashland's win at MTU last Saturday (Sept. 13) was just the fifth time the Huskies have lost in their last 25 games at home.
Northern Michigan - Northern Michigan will have a short week as they host Michigan Tech on Thursday night in the Superior Dome for the Miner's Cup...The game will be shown on CBS College Sports Network and FSN Detroit... NMU currently has the cup and has won it twice in the six years...NMU took its first trip to Tiffin, Ohio to face the Tiffin University Dragons on Saturday and played the longest game in school history with the four overtime loss...Mark Bossuah has rushed for over 100 yards in four of his past five games with his 135 yards on 30 carries against Tiffin...The Wildcats used three quarterbacks against the Dragons, Ben Hempel was 10-17-1 for 207 yards with two touchdowns, Carter Kopach was 10-15-1 for 93 yards and Matt Blanchard was 1-3-0 for four yards...Kopach also had four rushes for 23 yards...Eleven of the 21 catches were to Dan Elmore with seven for 98 yards and Fred Wells with four for 121 yards, each had a touchdown catch... Andrew Strobel had a career day with 14 total tackles (12 solo and two assisted) against Tiffin...As a unit the NMU defense recorded seven sacks and 11 tackles-for-loss against the Dragons...Jacob Reimer and David Reese each had two sacks for the game...Alex Grignon recorded two-and-a-half tackles-for-loss.
Northwood - Missed opportunities proved to be the key for Northwood in their 26-7 loss at Hillsdale Saturday afternoon ... the Timberwolves crossed the Charger 30 yard line seven times, but only managed to score seven point in the contest ... Northwood had the ball at the Hillsdale three yard line trailing 13-7 early in the fourth quarter, but NU fumbled the ball and Hillsdale returned it 85 yards to set up a touchdown to put the contest away ... the Timberwolves finished the game with 246 yards rushing, led by junior quarterback Spencer Klukowski (Rockford, Mich.), who finished with a game-high 120 yards on the ground ... NU's lone TD was an 18-yard pass from Klukowski to Antoine Carr (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) ... Baher Faik (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) had a pair of tackles for loss and a pair of forced fumbles in the game ... Northwood will host its home opener Saturday against Saginaw Valley State.
Saginaw Valley State - Saginaw Valley lost to # 2 Grand Valley 36-0. SVSU was held to 101 total yards on offense, including just four total yards of rushing. The Cardinals were shut out for the first time since 1992 when they lost to Butler (Ind.) 37-0. Preseason All-American punter Kurtis Fournier averaged 42.9 yards per kick on the afternoon for his seven punts. The Cardinal offense was unable to get anything going during the rain filled afternoon at Wickes Stadium..The offensive bright spot for the Cardinal might have been when running back L.J. Robertson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Eastern Michigan) who came in and picked up 24 yards rushing on the Cardinals final drive. Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) took over at the quarterback spot during that final drive and completed 4-of-5 passes for 34 yards and also scrambled for another 14 yards as well. The Defense was lead by John Jacobs (Prudenville, Mich./Midland Dow) who had 16 tackles and Carlton Downs (Detroit, Mich./Denby HS) who had eight tackles and a forced fumble.
Tiffin - The Dragons continue to spread around the passing, as Greg Raspberry had 10 catches for 83 yards, Mike Lento had 8 catches for 84 yards, Edwards had 7 catches for 81 yards, and Trey Williams had 7 catches for 64 yards...Nine different Dragons caught passes...The Dragons defense posted 6 sacks with 10 tackles for loss...Drew Douthit had 11 tackles (9 solo) with 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries...Rahsan Wilson had 11 tackles with 2 tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and a deflection... Wyatt Thames had 3 sacks in the game...Arthur Allen had an interception with a 27 yard return...Steve Yarbrough had 8 tackles...TU held a 34:22-25:38 advantage in time of possession ...TU was 5-for-7 in the red zone.
Wayne State - Wayne State has started the year 2-1 for only the second time in the last 14 years (2006 squad also started 2-1) ... 27 of WSU's 37 points have been scored in the first period with the other 10 points coming in the second quarter ... despite not scoring a point in the second half, the Warrior defense has allowed only three points in the second half this season ... last Saturday's shutout was the first by WSU since October 17, 1992 (a 21-0 win at Northwood), a span of 156 games ... it was also the first shutout at home since Oct. 24, 1987 (a 41-0 win over Northwood), a span of 105 games ... with his four pass break-ups, senior Dante Dunn (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) moved into seventh place on the WSU all-time list with 22 (5 interceptions/17 break-ups) ... Dunn, who had a kickoff return for a touchdown in each of the first two games, blocked an Indianapolis punt that was recovered by freshman Nick Thomas (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) for the game's only points ... the blocked kick was the fifth of Dunn's career (fourth punt along with one field goal) and also marked the second time he blocked a punt that resulted in a Warrior touchdown (first was Oct. 29, 2005, in a 14-7 win over Gannon.
