DENVER - Making his major league debut Monday night, former Wayne State University pitcher Anthony Bass pitched five strong innings and picked up the victory as the San Diego Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies, 3-1, at Coors Field in Denver.
Bass, called up by the Padres from Double-A San Antonio, allowed
five hits and four walks, recording one strikeout. His debut was
cut short by an 83-minute weather delay in the top of the
sixth.
The right-hander from Trenton worked out of a few tough spots,
including a situation with runners at first and second with one out
in the first inning. He retired Troy Tulowitzki and struck out Seth
Smith to escape unscathed.
After allowing just a one-out single in the second and recording a
one-two-three inning in the third, Bass issued a two-out walk to Ty
Wigginton, who stole second and scored on a bloop single by Charlie
Blackmon. A grounder by Aaron Cook ended the remaining threat.
With runners at second and third, and one out in the fifth, Bass
knocked down a bouncer back up the middle and threw out Carlos
Gonzalez at home. A walk to Smith loaded the bases before Wigginton
grounded out.
Bass threw 81 pitches including 44 strikes before the thunderstorm
ended his night. He retired six batters via groundout and another
six on flyouts.
