SVSU Baseball Coach Walt Head Reaches the 800 Win Mark

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University baseball Head Coach Walt Head recently recorded his 800th win in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 27th. Head becomes the 27th coach in NCAA Division II history to reach the milestone.
The Cardinals posted a sweep of Hillsdale College on the road by scores of 9-3 and 4-1 on Sunday, securing Head’s 799th and 800th wins, respectively. Head now has the second-most wins among Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) coaches at the Division II level.
Head is currently ninth among active Division II head coaches in career wins, and sits just one victory behind Slippery Rock’s Jeff Messer, who also won his 800th career game on Sunday.
Among Head’s accomplishments are two NAIA District 23 titles, the 1995, 2000 and 2001 GLIAC titles, the 1996 and 2003 GLIAC Tournament title and the 1995 and 2001 GLIAC "Coach of the Year" honors. The 1997 squad finished the season with a school-record ten-game win streak, matched in 2000. He also owns 27 victories over NCAA Division I teams.
Head has coached four GLIAC "Pitchers of the Year" during his tenure, including Tim Goheen (2000), Scott Corby (2001 & 2003) and Scott Roy (2007). He has had three players earn GLIAC "Player of the Year" accolades, including Mike Bloomfield (1993), John Sullivan (1996), and Jason Valenzuela (2000). Head has also coaches one GLIAC "Freshman of the Year" in Adam Piggott (2001).
