GVSU's Season Ends at the D-II Baseball World Series

BAY CITY, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) was represented by Grand Valley State University at the 2011 NCAA Division-II World Series at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary N.C. GVSU lost the first two games of the World Series bringing the 2011 GLIAC baseball season to an end.


 

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

#1 Grand Valley State finished their 2011 season with a 52-5 overall mark, setting a school record for wins and winning percentage (.912)…The Lakers were eliminated from the Division II College World Series after consecutive losses to Sonoma State (7-6, 11 inn.) and Southern Connecticut State (8-6)…Junior pitcher Kyle Schepel has been named a Second Team All-American by Daktronics and an honorable mention All-American by the NCBWA…Junior outfielder Cody Grice was named a Third Team All-American by the NCBWA…Grice and junior outfielder Steve Anderson were both named honorable mention All-Americans by Daktronics…Senior Joe Jablonski capped off one of the best careers ever for a GVSU pitcher, finishing as the all-time career wins leader (26) and innings pitched leader (263.1) while finishing second in shutouts (3), third in strikeouts (183) and tied for fifth in appearances (59)…Grice became the career leader in runs (170) and is second all-time in hits (238) and total bases (349) after only three years of play…Anderson tallied the second-best single-season RBI total in GVSU history with 64 this season while Schepel moved in to second all-time on the career wins list with 22…As a team, the Lakers set new single season school records in walks (259) and hit by pitches (78) and tallied the second best run total (462), RBI total (416) and sacrifice fly total (44) while tying for the second-best mark in on-base percentage in a season (.437)…The GVSU pitching staff set new season highs in victories (52), shutouts (9) and saves (15) while posting the third best single-season ERA in school history (2.58) including two pitchers who posted sub 2.00 ERA’s with over 35 innings pitched (Ryan Garman – 1.70 and Brad Zambron – 1.95)…Schepel’s 11 victories on the season are tied for the second most in a single season at GVSU while Zambron’s 10 saves are the most in school history in a season.
