Wayne State Claims Baseball and Softball GLIAC Championships; Tournament Pairings Set

BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University baseball and softball teams each claimed the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship as regular season play concluded on Sunday.

The Wayne State baseball team, coached by Ryan Kelley, earned the GLIAC title after posting a 23-8 mark in league play and a 29-18 overall record. This is the fifth GLIAC baseball championship for Wayne State and the first since the 1998 season.

The Warriors enter the 2010 GLIAC Baseball Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. Grand Valley State University will be the No. 2 seed, while Ashland University and Saginaw Valley State University are the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively.

The 2010 GLIAC Baseball Tournament will be held May 6-8 at V.A. Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Wayne State University also claimed the 2010 GLIAC Softball Championship. Head coach Gary Bryce led the Warriors to a 21-5 conference record, finishing 47-10 overall. This is the third title in the last five years for WSU. The Warriors carry the No. 1 seed into this weekends GLIAC Softball Tournament.

Ashland claimed the No. 2 seed after posting a 20-6 league record. The Eagles are followed by Northwood University and Ferris State University at the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively. Tiffin University finished the season with a 16-10 league mark, placing the Dragons at the No. 5 seed. Saginaw Valley State, the 2009 GLIAC Champions, enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed.  Rounding out the tournament are No. 7 Grand Valley State and No. 8 Hillsdale College.

The 2010 GLIAC Softball Tournament will be held May 7-9 at Emerson Park in Midland, Michigan.
