Bulldogs
 The Ferris State University men’s tennis team finished in fourth place overall after dropping its third-place match Sunday (April 20) morning in the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.The second-seeded Bulldogs suffered a 5-2 setback to number four seed Wayne State in Sunday’s match. Ferris previously opened the event with a 5-0 quarterfinal-round shutout of seventh-seeded Michigan Tech on Saturday (April 19) before being upset 5-1 by third-seed Grand Valley State in the semifinals. The Warriors won two of three doubles flights and then took the top three singles spots to claim the win over the Bulldogs.The Bulldogs entered the tournament ranked 37th nationally along with third in the Great Lakes Region. Wayne State is listed 43rd in the national rankings and improved to 9-9 overall this year with the triumph.Ferris, which is presently 10-10 overall this season following the loss, will most likely earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Championships. The bids will be awarded next week for the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional, which will take place May 8-10 at a campus site to be announced.

Oilers
  The University of Findlay men’s tennis team finished eighth at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Sunday, April 20 in Midland, Michigan. The Oilers lost 5-0 to Northwood University in the first match and then fell 5-2 to Mercyhurst College in the second round before losing 5-3 to Michigan Technological University in the third. The Oilers will be back in action again on April 24 when they face Tiffin University at 3:00 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.

 The GVSU men’s tennis team was defeated in the GLIAC Championship match on Sunday by Northwood by a score of 5-0. The Lakers fall to 19-5 on the season and receive a second place finish in the GLIAC, while Northwood improves to 12-2. The Lakers will await information about postseaon play. In doubles play, Tony Dang and Patryk Polus put up a fight in the No. 1 slot, but fell at the hands of Peter Kazianschuetz and Pierre Martiner Bot, 8-6. Patrick Troy and Renato Tamashiro were defeated by Betrand Vigouroux and Olivier Brignoli by an 8-2 score, while Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson were bettered in the third doubles position by Carlos Canudas and Alex Minicozzi, 8-2. It took just two singles matches for Northwood to seal the victory.In the top slot, it was Kazianschuetz defeating Dang in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The other victory went to Brignoli, who topped Troy in the No. 3 singles spot, 6-2, 6-1. The remaining matches were unfinished.

  LSSU, which finished sixth in the GLIAC regular-season and tournament standings, is eligible to return all seven starters from this year’s team, which finished 9-13 overall. LSSU’s only upperclassman is junior Craig Baas (Cadillac, Mich.), who was 8-15 while playing Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles. In addition to Baas, redshirt freshman Pawel Wegrzyn (Mississauga, Ont.) and freshman Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) totaled eight wins each. Wegrzyn played No. 1 singles, while Toth competed at the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 positions. Wegrzyn was 6-11 at No. 1 in dual matches. Baas and freshman Robert Nelson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had LSSU’s best doubles record of 5-7 at No. 2. Nelson and redshirt freshman Brandon Clayton (Windsor, Ont.) were 3-2 when paired together.

Lakers

  The Mercyhurst men’s tennis team completed the GLIAC Tournament with a 2-1 record and a fifth-place finish by defeating Lake Superior State 5-0 Sunday. The Lakers entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and lost their opening round match to No. 4 seed Wayne State before defeating Findlay and Lake Superior State. Mercyhurst swept the doubles matches in fairly easy fashion, picking up an 8-1 victory by Tim Hansson and Mateusz Przybysz at No. 1 doubles. Mijo Cotic and Adam Marnik paired up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 and Kyle King and Ronald Heurich won 8-3 at No. 3. The Lakers needed to win just two singles matches to clinch the victory and Cotic and Heurich quickly disposed of their opponents. Cotic won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and Heurich won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. Lake Superior State drops to 9-13 with the loss and Mercyhurst improves to 8-9. The Lakers’ season has likely come to a close as the team is not currently ranked in the top eight in the region to qualify for an NCAA playoff spot.

Huskies
 Michigan Tech claimed seventh place at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s tennis championship today with a 5-3 victory over Findlay. The match wrapped up the Huskies’ 2007-08 season with a 4-17 record. Tech opened the match with a 2-1 lead after doubles. Brett Girard and Matt Tronnes posted an 8-4 victory at number one while the number three pairing of Justin Foley and Tim Viola cruised to an 8-2 triumph. Findlay put its first team point on the board with an 8-5 win at number two.Foley, a senior playing in his final collegiate match, made quick work of his number five singles opponent with a 6-3, 6-0 score. Tronnes also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. He finishes the year with a team-high six singles wins. After the Oilers gained decisions at number two and three singles, Tech’s Girard polished off the Huskies’ victory. The junior number one singles player rallied from losing the first set to post a 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 triumph.

Timberwolves
   The No. 16 Northwood University men’s tennis team claimed its 14th straight GLIAC Championship Sunday morning, defeating Grand Valley 5-0 in the conference tournament championship match.NU is now 12-2 overall on the season. Northwood now earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin May 8 or 9.Northwood swept the doubles matches to go up 3-0. NU then won a pair of singles matches in straight sets to clinch the shutout win.

    The #4 Wayne State men’s tennis team upset #2 Ferris State in the third place match of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament held at the Midland Tennis Center Sunday morning. The Warriors were led by sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) who won his team-high 16th consecutive singles match finishing a perfect 10-0 in GLIAC regular and post season competition. With a 9-9 overall record, WSU hopes to receive an at large bid to the NCAA Championships. Wayne State opened the match taking 2-of-3 doubles matches from Ferris State (10-10). The No. 1 tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) edged Lewis DeGeneault and Ahmet Demir, 9-8, winning the tiebreaker, 7-5, while the No. 3 squad of sophomore Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) and freshman Felipe Fonseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Hope) upended Tyler Shelly and Brian Anderson, 8-1. The Warriors were able to capitalize on its 2-1 lead during singles play getting wins at the top three positions to seal the match. Maubacq defeated DeGeneault in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 while Marenaud took out Demir, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 position. Mitchell notched the final victory downing Bryan Karazia, 6-4, 6-2.
