The Ferris State University men’s tennis team wrapped up its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season slate with a 6-3 triumph over visiting Wayne State Saturday (April 5) afternoon at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs concluded league action with a 6-1 overall mark in the GLIAC to go along with a 9-8 overall record. Wayne State dropped to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in conference competition. FSU led 2-1 after the doubles round and then claimed four of the six singles flights. Ferris State is currently ranked third in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Rankings along with 37th nationally in NCAA Division II action. The Warriors entered the match listed fifth in the most recent regional poll in additio to being ranked 43rd nationally. FSU has presently won seven of its last nine dual outings this season under first-year head coach Alex Palladino. The match concluded a four-match conference homestand for the Bulldogs. FSU is next slated to compete in the annual GLIAC Tournament April 19-20 at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich. Official matchups for the event will be announced the week of the tournament.

Oilers
The University of Findlay men’s tennis team lost 8-1 to Michigan Technological University on Friday, April 4 in Houghton, Michigan. The team then took on Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and lost 8-1 on Saturday, April 5. The loss gives the Oilers a 5-8 record on the season with a 0-5 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Grand Valley State had a short week, as it had its match against Northwood moved to next week…The Lakers defeated Wayne State in a highly-contested 6-3 match…GVSU is now 15-4 on the season and earned a #42 national ranking, the first time the Lakers have been ranked in school history…Philipp Claus won his fourth match in a row, defeating Alejandro Gomez, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4…Claus is now 16-2 on the year and 3-1 in the GLIAC…Tony Dang improved to 14-6 on the season with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-2 win over Johan Maubacq…In doubles play, Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson won their seventh match in a row, recording an 8-6 win over Kevin Turnbull and Eric Szydlowski…The duo is now 20-3 on the season…GVSU will play four matches this week, with a home match against Northwood on Wed (4/9), followed by a road trip to Findlay (4/12), Tiffin (4/12), and Mercyhurst (4/13).

Freshman Robert Nelson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) won 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 against Findlay on Saturday and 6-3, 6-4 against Mercyhurst on Sunday to finish 2-0 at No. 4 singles for the week. He improved his overall record to 5-17 (2-4 GLIAC). Nelson was the Lakers’ lone winner during an 8-1 loss to Mercyhurst…LSSU swept Findlay in doubles on Saturday, then lost all three doubles matches to Mercyhurst on Sunday. The Lakers are a combined 4-14 in GLIAC doubles matches this season…LSSU redshirt freshman Pawel Wegrzyn (Mississauga, Ont.) is 8-12 overall at No. 1 singles, but winless (0-5) against GLIAC opponents. He did not play against Findlay.

Mercyhurst got back to .500 in the conference by defeating Michigan Tech 9-0 and beating Lake Superior State 8-1…Freshman Tim Hansson won both of his matches at No. 1 singles and is now 5-1 in conference play at that spot. He is 8-4 on the year at No. 1 singles…Mijo Cotic and Adam Marnik are 4-2 at No. 2 doubles in conference play, while Ronald Heurich and Kyle King have an identical record at No. 3 doubles…The Lakers close out the regular season Sunday by hosting Grand Valley State.

Michigan Tech wrapped up its 2008 home schedule with a 2-2 record … Matt Tronnes and Brandon Ellefson each have five singles wins to lead the team … Tronnes and Brett Girard are the Huskies’ winningest doubles duo with a 5-13 record … Tech closes out its regular season Saturday (April 12) with a match at Lake Superior State.

Warriors
Last week, the Wayne State men’s tennis team earned its first national ranking of the season at #43 and posted a #6 regional ranking. The Warriors continued Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with two hard fought 6-3 setbacks to #43 Grand Valley (Apr. 4) and #37 Ferris State (Apr. 5) falling to 4-2 in league action. The team snapped its two-game skid with a 7-2 non-conference victory over Tiffin (Apr. 7). Antoine Marenaud is currently riding a team-high 10 match singles winning streak and has a #15 regional ranking.
