The Ferris State University men’s tennis team opens a five-match homestand against conference rival Northwood Tuesday, March 25, starting at 2 p.m.(EDT) inside FSU’s Racquet and Fitness Center at Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs, who are ranked 39th in the ITA Division II National Poll and third in the Great Lakes Region, presently own a perfect 3-0 mark in GLIAC action and are 6-7 overall to date this season. Five of Ferris’ seven losses have came to nationally-ranked opponents. FSU played eight matches in five states during its annual spring break trip from March 7-16. The Bulldogs currently own a 46-43 (.517) cumulative singles record along with a 16-28 (.364) overall doubles ledger to date this campaign. Senior Akshay Chellappa (Mumbai, India) is ranked 33rd nationally in singles play in addition to being the region’s third-ranked singles performer this season.
Bulldog head coach Alex Palladino is in his first season at the FSU helm. Ferris continues its homestand versus Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech this weekend (March 28-29).

The Oilers split a pair of matches last week…They lost 9-0 to Wayne State and then defeated Capital 5-3…Travis Whipple and Steven Fox both won their singles matches and then teamed to win a doubles match against Capital…Findlay is now 5-3 on the season.

Lakers
Grand Valley State has opened the year with an 11-3 record. They have gone 97-51 overall (.655) in those 14 matches. Freshman Philipp Claus (Grand Ledge, Mich.) and sophomore Brock Plangger (St. Joseph’s, Mich.) have both posted strong records to start the year. Claus has gone 12-2 so far, while Plangger has gone 8-2. As a doubles pairing, Claus and Plangger are 2-0. Sophomore Matt Globerson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) has now won six matches in a row and holds an overall record of 8-3.

LSSU’s lone wins last weekend included the No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Jack Miller (Marquette, Mich.) and Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) against Northwood, 9-7, and rookie Jeff Ferrel (Brighton, Mich.), who posted a No. 6 singles victory over Wayne State, 7-5, 6-4…Sophomore Pawel Wegrzyn (Mississauga, Ont.) is 7-9 at No. 1 singles and 4-6 when paired with redshirt freshman Brandon Clayton (Windsor, Ont.) at No. 1 doubles…LSSU was 3-6 during its spring break trip to Orlando, Feb. 28 through March 6.

Mercyhurst had the week off to prepare for a pair of upcoming GLIAC matches against Northwood and Wayne State…The Lakers are 4-5 on the season and are 4-3 in the spring and 1-1 in GLIAC play…Mercyhurst defeated Findlay 9-0 on March 14 and lost to Ferris State 7-2 the next day.

Michigan Tech is 2-11 on the season … The Huskies’ number one singles player is junior Brett Girard (Marquette, Mich.) … Number two singles player Brandon Ellefson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and number six singles player Matt Tronnes (Edgerton, Wis.) are leading the team with four wins apiece.

Timberwolves
No. 19 Northwood opened GLIAC play with a pair of conference victories, defeating Lake Superior 8-1 before downing Michigan Tech 9-0 … the Timberwolves are now 4-2 on the season … NU won all 12 singles matches in straight sets and posted a combined record of 5-1 in doubles … NU, which has claimed 12 straight GLIAC Championships, features four new players in their six-man singles lineup this season … despite all the new faces, Northwood has gone 12-5 in doubles play this season as a team (.706) … the Timberwolves will travel to Ferris State Tuesday afternoon (March 25) before hosting Mercyhurst Friday afternoon (March 28).

Warriors
T he Wayne State men's tennis team's opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in dominating fashion defeating Findlay, 9-0, (March 19), Michigan Tech, 8-1, (March 21) and Lake Superior State ,8-1, (Marrch 22) for a perfect 3-0 record at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield. The Warriors dropped only two overall matches winnings 16 of a possible 18 singles matches with 15 coming in straight sets. WSU also went a perfect 9-0 in doubles competition. Four players have a current singles winning streak of five or more matches. Senior Donavon Mitchell ( Detroit, Mich./Mumford) leads the team with seven, sophomore Antoine Marenaud ( Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez ( Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) each have six while freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) has five. WSU has a busy day on Saturday, March 29. The Warriors continue conference play with a 12 p.m. home dual match against Mercyhurst at the Gross Point Yacht Club and then hits the road for a non-conference dual match against Division I opponent Toledo at 7:00 p.m.
