Ashland

Eagles
Ashland played its best match of the season against Findlay in the conference opener, earning a 1-1 tie. Neither team tallied a goal in the two overtime sessions. Senior forward Albert Smith (Pickerington, OH/West Virginia Univ.) recorded his second goal of the season against the Oilers. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Cruise (Ormskirk, Lancaster, UK/Hartwell College) notched 8 saves for AU. The Eagles managed a pair of goals in the second half of an 8-2 loss to #2 Northern Kentucky. Freshman forward Seth Janitzki (Sandusky, OH/Perkins) tallied the first goal of his collegiate career on an assist from sophomore midfielder Max Hiltner (Wadsworth, OH). Hiltner later added a goal of his own, also his first of the year, on a penalty kick late in the second frame.

Oilers
The Oilers finished the week with a 1-0-1 record after tying Ashland 1-1 and winning against Seton Hill 2-0. Sophomore B.J. Goodwin led the way by making two assists to go along with one goal in the two games. Sophomore Ronnie Platten scored the other two goals for Findlay.

Gannon University
Golden Knights
Gannon moved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC with road victories last week at Mercyhurst, Saginaw Valley State, and Northwood. The Golden Knights are 6-0 for the fourth time in school history and first time since 1996. The program advanced to the NCAA Tournament in two of the previous three seasons in which it won the first six matches. Gannon’s victory at Mercyhurst was its first over the Lakers since 2002, Chad Wynter (Mississauga, Ontario/John Cabot Catholic) headed in the game-winner at Mercyhurst, his third career game-winning goal. Geneo Oberst (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) accounted for all Gannon’s scoring during a 3-1 victory at Northwood, producing his first career hat trick. Oberst had six goals during his first two seasons at Gannon and already has six this season through six matches. Steven Boehmer (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) is 5-0 in goal this season. Gannon’s six goals at Saginaw Valley State was its highest single-match output since an 8-1 victory against Upper Iowa on October 8, 2005.

Mercyhurst

Lakers
Mercyhurst had a week full of conference match-ups against Gannon, Northwood and Saginaw Valley State. On Tuesday, the Lakers fell 2-1 to the Gannon Golden Knights in an overtime. Mercyhurst lead 1-0 until late into the second half, goalkeeper Daniel Mudd played fantastically in goal with 10 saves on the day. On Friday, Mercyhurst beat Northwood by a score of 2-1. Freshman Billy Colton scored both goals for the Lakers in the win over Northwood. On Sunday, the Lakers fell victim to a four goal scoring stretch in the first half from Saginaw Valley State to end in a 4-1 loss. Mercyhurst ended the week 1-2-0 in the GLIAC standings.

Northwood
University
Timberwolves
The Northwood Men’s Soccer team went 0-2-1 last week, playing to a draw with Saginaw Valley before falling to Mercyhurst and Gannon. Looking at the statistics for the week showed how even all of the matches were. NU was out-shot for the week 42-39, but held a 17-12 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Ryan Morales (Brandon, Mich.) netted a pair of goals for the Timberwolves in the week. Northwood was forced to play without starting midfielder Mike Spencer (London, England), who was injured, against Mercyhurst and Gannon. Northwood has already played five home matches this season, but has just four remaining home contests this season. NU has this week off, they will return to action Sept. 28 at Mercyhurst.

Cardinals
The men’s soccer team at Saginaw Valley State had a very high-octane week scoring 10 goals. However, they also allowed 10 goals and finished the week with one win, one loss and one tie to start GLIAC action. Junior forward Brent Walker (Owosso, Mich.) notched six points this week, scoring two goals and assisting on two other goals. Senior midfielder Jimmy Henry (Oxford, Mich.) led the team with nine shots this week and also had five points and two goals. Junior midfielder Larry Ferriera (London, Ont.) scored two goals this week as both his shots found the net. Senior Nick Kohn (Bay City, Mich./Western) picked up his first win in goal allowing one tally and making three saves against Mercyhurst.
