Eagles
The Eagles were second last weekend at the Nickoloff Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati. The Eagles finished second in the final team standings. Senior Bryan Vickers (Centerville, OH) threw the discus 173-07 and that improved his earlier national qualification in the event. Vickers also has an automatic qualification in the shot put. Junior Dan Tierney (Albion NY/Medina) upped his mark in the pole vault to 17-0.75. He’s an automatic qualifier for nationals…the one new name on the provisional list is senior Brandon Bauer (Reynoldsburg, OH) in the steeplechase. His time last weekend in the event was 9:25.33. Vickers also made the provisional list in the hammer thanks to a throw of 178-7…this coming weekend (Apr. 12) the Eagles will compete at the Northeast Ohio Championships, hosted by the University of Akron.

The Ferris State University men’s track and field squad came away with one first-place performance as the squad hosted its annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday (April 5) at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.The non-scoring meet, which serves as the Bulldogs’ lone home event of the season, took place under sunny skies and a brisk wind. The large field included student-athletes from Ferris, Grand Valley State, Saginaw Valley State, Northwood, Northern Michigan, Calvin, Adrian, Alma, Aquinas, Hope, Lansing Community College, Macomb Community College, Lake Superior State as well as several other unattached participants.Senior Dave Czerny (Piedmont, S.D.) picked up the lone individual title for the FSU men’s team as he won the pole vault (15-1). Meanwhile, fellow Bulldog senior Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) placed fourth in the 800 meters (1:58.26) for the men’s squad.Ferris State is next scheduled to take part in a pair of meets. The Bulldogs will send student-athletes to the Tennessee Sea Ray Relays slated for Friday and Saturday (April 11-12) in Knoxville, Tenn. Other team members will compete in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational on Saturday (April 12) starting at 11 a.m. (EDT) in University Center, Mich.

The University of Findlay men’s outdoor track and field team completed the Oliver Nickoloff Invitational on Saturday, April 5 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The men took tenth with a total of 18 points. Carleton McGrady broke his own school record in the shot put with a toss of 53’00.75 while James Eric also topped his school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 182’04.00. Greg Schaible added a fourth place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.92 while Ryan McKibben was sixth in the pole vault at 15’01.00. The Oilers will be back in action again on April 11-12 when they compete in the Miami Team Challenge in Oxford, Ohio.

Grand Valley State University had student-athletes competing at three different venues over the weekend and came away with three qualifying marks for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. A pole vaulter hit a qualifying mark at Missouri Southern and two distance runners met the times at the Stanford Invitational. Nate Peck also set a school record in the 5k.Nate Peck and Nick Polk both ran in the 5k at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Both runners qualified for the NCAA nationals after strong performances. Peck set the school record and also hit an automatic qualifying mark by crossing the finish line in 14:00.91. Polk finished in a lifetime-best 14:26.23 which also qualified for the nationals.Bryant Wilson qualified in the pole vault, competing at Missouri Southern. Wilson won his event, clearing 16’9.5". At Ferris State, Garron Lucius won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.84 seconds. Nate Miller also took first in his event, winning the high jump with a heighth of 6’6". Ryan Rademacher won the long jump by going 22’11", which was over a foot longer than the second place distance. Ian Evans finished second place in the shot put by throwing a distance of 52’10.75".

Competing against Big Ten power Purdue University, the Hillsdale College Men’s Track & Field team held their own to start the 2008 Outdoor Track & Field season.Leading the way for the Chargers was sophomore Aaron Falk. Falk finished 2nd in the Hammer Throw, and recorded a NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark along the way. His throw of 53.53m (175’ 7") currently ranks him 8th nationally.The Chargers also received solid performances from Joel VanDerworp and All-American Jared Krout. VanDerworp finished 3rd in the 1500m, while Krout finished 3rd in the Long Jump and 4th in the 200m Dash.Other Top-8 performers included Andrew Dodson (5th – High Jump), Timothy Howse (5th – 5000m Run), Tim Sayers (6th- 5000m Run) and the 4x400m Relay team (6th).The Chargers will travel to Oxford, OH next weekend for a meet at Miami University.

The Lake Superior State foursome of senior DJ Battistella (Newport, Mich.), sophomore Evan Williams (Plainwell, Mich.), freshman Eric Ouellette (Hammer, Ont.) and sophomore Paul Davis (St. Ignace, Mich.) won the men’s 4x400-meter relay at Saturday’s Bulldog Invitational. LSSU clocked a time of 3:22.20, finishing a half second ahead of GVSU. Battistella ran a :50.03 split, and was followed by Williams (:50.97), Ouellette (:49.60) and Davis (:50.81). Another impressive factor was that the Lakers won the event without quarter-mile specialist Adam Smith, who is red-shirting this season...Davis had a time of :22.11 and broke a four-year-old school record of :22.32 to win the men’s 200-meter dash...Battistella was also fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (:56.95), while freshman Rick Koon (Mayville, Mich.) placed fourth in the high jump (6-2), fifth in the long jump (21-2) and seventh in the triple jump (40-8 ¾)...Complete meet results were not available...The Lakers compete Saturday at the Spartan Invitational.

Junior Robert Haynes was the top finisher for the men’s team winning the 100 meter dash in 11.23. Haynes ran a time of 10.74 in the prelims but faced a strong head wind in the final. Junior Kevin Kayser finished second in the men’s jump (6’ 3.5”) and freshman Jacob Hill finished fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:39.80). The team will compete this Saturday (April 12) at the Saginaw Valley State Invitational.

The SVSU men’s track & field team had 15 different members finish in the top five at the Bulldog Invitational at Ferris State Saturday, with Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) and Tony Filipek (Caro, Mich./Kingston) winning the Shot Put and 800 Meter events respectively.Filipek took home first place in the 800 Meters with a time of 1:55.78 besting his nearest competitor by less than a second. Egan won the Shot Put with a throw of 52-10.75, which was more than a foot past the second place finisher. Egan also had familiar company with him at the top, as Josh Koglin (Kimball, Mich./Marysville) won fourth place in the event.The Cardinals had a number of events where teammates finished in the top five. Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.) and Kyle McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) finished second and fifth respectively in the 110 Meter Hurdles, while Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area) and Nick Krus (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) finished in third and fourth place in the 1500 Meters. Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) also finished in the top five in the running events, taking third place in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase.In the field events, the Cardinals continued to gang up on the competition. Tony McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) took second place in the Javelin Throw and was joined by Kevin Kelch (Lexington, Mich./Croswell-Lexington) and Scott Martin (Custer, Mich./Mason County Eastern), who finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.The Cardinals also teamed up in the Pole Vault, where Andrew Fern (Lawton, Mich.), who finished in the second place, was joined by Sean LaPine (Harbor Beach, Mich.) and Shane Albrecht (Carsonville, Mich.) in fourth and fifth place. Ryan Simmons () took home third place in the High Jump.SVSU will return to the track on April 12, when they host the SVSU Collegiate Invitational at Morley Field.
