Ashland University
Eagles
 Ashland competed at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, NC, last week. The Eagles came back from that venue with a pair of automatic qualifications for the national meet. Senior Bryan Vickers (Centerville, OH) earned a ticket to nationals in the shot put with a throw of 62-10.5. Vickers was second in the event. Senior Rob Klenk (Fairmont, OH/Kettering) qualified for nationals in the hammer throw with an effort that measured 208-4. That throw put him second. Vickers also recorded a provisional qualification in the discus (167-0). The senior led the field in the discus. Freshman Mike Jeffery (Dexter City, OH/Caldwell) reached a provisional mark in the hammer. His throw of 190-7 is a school, freshman record. Jeffery claimed the bronze medal in Raleigh…junior Dan Tierney (Albion, NY/Medina) competed at the College of Wooster last weekend and automatically qualified for nationals in the pole vault. He wrapped up a spot with a leap of 16-5.5.

  The Ferris State University men’s track and field program opened the 2008 outdoor campaign by sending student-athletes to the prestigious adidas Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C.FSU took part in the two-day weekend (March 28-29) competition, which wrapped up Saturday at NC State’s newly-renovated Derr Track on the North Carolina State campus. The field included a number of schools from all levels of competition including NCAA Division I institutions such as NC State, North Carolina, Michigan State, West Virginia, Charlotte, Hampton, Syracuse, Seton Hall, George Mason, BUffalo and Temple among others.Senior Dave Czerny (Piedmont, S.D.) registered the school’s second-best all-time performance in the pole vault as he placed tied for third in a competitve field with a vault of 15-5 at the meet.Meanwhile, fellow Bulldog senior Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) placed fifth in section two of the 1,500 meters (3:59.90) for the men’s squad in the non-scoring meet.Bulldog senior Travis Sinke (Howell) finished 15th in section two of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:47.75), junior Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) was 16th in the fourth section of the 5,000 meters (16:16.93) and sophomore Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) placed 17th in the 800-meter run invitational field (1:57.27). The Ferris men’s team also came in 15th in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (3:42.36) along with 16th in the 4x200-meter relay (1:37.16).The Ferris State team returnS home to host the annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday, April 5, at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich. Action begins at 10:30 a.m. (EDT).

  The University of Findlay men’s outdoor track and field team completed the Yellow Jacket Open in Cedarville, Ohio on Saturday, March 29. The men’s team placed third with 105 points while the women racked up 109.5 points, which was also good for third place at the event. On the men’s side, James Eric took home first place in the hammer throw with a school record breaking mark of 185’10.00 to lead the Oilers. Greg Schaible also came out victorious, winning the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.32.Cory Brunow added a second place finish in the long jump at 19’09.00 while Kyle Tweed was second in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:12.92 and Erik Birkholz claimed the silver in the 200 meter dash at 23.48. Birkholz also added a fourth place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.91 while Ryan McKibben took third in the pole vault with a mark of 15’05.75

 Grand Valley State University had student-athletes competing at the Grand Rapids Open and at the Missouri Relays over the weekend, and the teams came back with some high marks. In addition, the student-athletes that went to Missouri spent Thursday volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club in town. Garron Lucius qualified at the Missouri Relays in the hurdles, recording a time of 14.63 seconds in the 110-meter event. Lucius was part of the squad that went to Columbia, Mo. and spent Thursday doing activities with the kids at the Boys and Girls Club. The team and coach Ray Williams also held a track clinic to help them learn different drills. Tim Lelito also qualified, competing at the Grand Rapids Open, throwing a distance of 162’4" in the discus.

 Michigan Tech opened the season under first year head coach Margot Hutchins at the Sherman-Lukoski Invite Saturday (March 29). The women’s team finished second one point behind St. Norbert while the men finished second behind host school Ripon. Erin Ballun finished first in both the long jump (15-3.5) and the high jump (5-1.25) and posted a fifth place finish in the 200 (29.30). Senior Andrea Metz finished first in the 1,500 (4:57.82) and finished second in the 5,000 in a new personal best of 18:42.93. Stuart Kramer led the men’s team with a wins in the 1,500 (4:07.00) and 5,000 (15:47.44).

   The Northwood University track and field teams did not compete last week .. they will open their outdoor season Saturday (April 5) at the Bulldog Open

 The SVSU men’s track team took first place with a total of 236 points at the Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational held hosted by St. Joseph’s College Saturday afternoon.Six different Cardinals took home first place on the day for the Cardinals, while 13 others team members came away with top-three finishes.Tony Filipek (Caro, Mich./Kingston) took home first place in the 800 Meter event with a time of 1:57.14 with teammate Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area) right behind him in second place. Not to be outdone, Weddel took home a first place finish of his own in the 1500 Meters with a time of 4:07.28 while Nick Krus (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) finished in third place in the even. Cortland Seaver (Freeland, Mich.) and Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) also took home first place finishes in the 5000 Meters and the 3000 Steeplechase respectively, while Stone also added a second place finish in the 5000 Meters.The Cardinals also placed well in the field events. Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) took home first place in the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, six inches. Andrew Fern (Lawton, Mich.) joined him in the winner’s circle with a first place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 14 feet.Saginaw Valley featured a well-rounded group in the field events, with four second place and four third place finishes. Josh Koglin (Kimball, Mich./Marysville) contributed a large portion of that tally, leaving the meet with a second place finish in the discus throw and third place finishes in the shot put and hammer throw events. Shane Albrecht (Carsonville, Mich.), Joe Dugall (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) and Tony McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) all came away with second place finishes in the pole vault, high jump and javelin respectively.The Cardinals’ 236 points were 70 points better than second place Indianapolis, who finished with 166 points. St. Joseph’s (146) and Marian (59) rounded out the field.Saginaw Valley returns to the track on Apr. 5 for the Ferris State Invitational in Big Rapids, Mich.
