Eagles
The AU men were ranked first in the country in last week’s NCAA Division II indoor national rankings. This is the second consecutive year the Eagles have held the top spot in the country…the Eagles competed at the University of Akron last Saturday (Feb. 2). Ashland’s 4X400 unit set a school record (3:14.89) at Akron. In establishing the record, that quartet defeated Michigan, Wake Forest, Bucknell, Akron, Eastern Michigan,Western Carolina and Youngstown…sophomore Joe Horn (Waynesfield, OH/Waynesfield-Goshen) set a school record in the 400m (48.20). The previous mark belonged to Brian Ryman (48.22)…senior Rob Kettering (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) has the nation’s top effort in the weight throw (67-08.00) and senior Bryan Vickers (Circleville, OH) is second (62-05.75). Vickers is the national leader in the shot (64-00.50). Freshman Mike Jeffrey (Dexter City, OH/Caldwell) has the eighth best effort in the weight throw (59-05.75). In the pole vault, junior Dan Tierney (Albion, NY/Medina) is tied for the longest leap in the nation (5-03m).

Bulldogs
The Ferris State University men’s indoor track and field program sent student-athletes to Saturday’s (Feb. 2) impromptu Lake Superior State Open in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The meet was added to the schedule following the cancellation of the Division II Team Challenge, which was originally scheduled to be hosted by Saginaw Valley State on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 1-2) in University Center, Mich. In addition to FSU and host LSSU, the meet also included competitors from Northern Michigan and Northwood. Senior Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) won the men’s mile run (4:36.34) for FSU along with placing third in the 3,000 meters (9:01.32). Sophomore Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) placed second in the mile (4:47.40) for the men’s squad. The Bulldogs are next slated to compete in the Grand Valley State Open Friday, Feb. 15, inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena at Allendale, Mich. The action begins at 5 p.m. (EST).

Oilers
The University of Findlay men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams completed the second and final day of the Indiana University Relays on Saturday, February 2 in Bloomington, Indiana. The Oiler men’s 4x400 meter relay team of Greg Schaible, Simon Bernard, Erik Birkholz and Scott Werner were 21st at 3:25.64. The Oilers will be back in action again on February 8-9 at the New Balance Invitational in New York, New York as well as the Friday Night Series on Friday, February 8 in Ada, Ohio.

A winter storm cancelled the NCAA D-II Challenge at Saginaw Valley State last weekend. The Lakers will resume action on Friday, Feb. 8 at the St. Valentine’s Invite hosted by Boston University and will continue through Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008.

After a downstate snowstorm cancelled last weekend’s meet at Saginaw Valley State University, Northern Michigan, Northwood and Ferris State headed north for a meet that was put together at the last minute by Lake Superior State...LSSU posted school records by sophomore Paul Davis (St. Ignace, Mich.), who won the men’s 200-meter dash in :22.577, and Patrick Wright (Luzerne, Mich.), who was competing unattached and finished second in the men’s 55-meter dash finals with a time of :06.63. Wright bettered former Laker All-American Derek Sandahl’s time of :06.69, but Wright’s record was unofficial...Other LSSU winners included Rick Koon (Mayville, Mich.), Eric Ouellette (Hammer, Ont.), Davis and Evan Williams (Plainwell, Mich.) in the men’s 4x400-meter relay, and Ouellette, Koon, Williams and Kevin Macomber (Gregory, Mich.) in the men’s distance medley relay...John Preczewski (Roscommon, Mich.) won the 55-meter hurdles (:08.67), Luke Allen (Manistee, Mich.) took the 3,000-meter run (8:53.89), and Dana Skytta (Michigamme, Mich.) placed first in the high jump (1.93m)...Ben Tarbutton (Gaylord, Mich.) was second and Macomber fourth as the Lakers dominated the men’s 3K.

Northwood University
Timberwolves
The Northwood University track and field teams competed at the Lake Superior Open Saturday afternoon (February 2). Northwood was originally scheduled to compete at the D-II Challenge, hosted by Saginaw Valley. A winter storm forced the cancellation of the meet, after which a last-second meet was formed by LSSU. Northwood, Northern Michigan, Ferris State and Lake Superior took part in the meet. On the men’s side, Craig Borsenik (Durand, Mich./Corunna) was a double-winner for the Timberwolves, winning the weight throw (46-6) and the shot put (45-2). NU swept the top three positions in the 400 meter dash, led by winner Ian Butters (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) at 54.71. Kevin Lawson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) took home first place in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.62, while Lance Wojewuczki (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford) placed third in the event at 6.68. NU earned a pair of third place finishes in the 800 and the mile, thanks to Jared Fischer (Unionville, Mich./USA) in the 800 (1:57.40) and Jon Hodge (Grosse Ile, Mich.) placed in the mile (4:54.46). Justin Esch (Chelsea, Mich.) claimed second place in the 200 with a time of 22.87, while teammate John Goldwater (Clinton Twp., Mich./Fraser) followed in third at 23.03. The Timberwolves will split up next week, with some members of the team heading to Northern Michigan while others will compete at Saginaw Valley.

A winter storm cancelled the NCAA D-II Challenge at Saginaw Valley State last weekend. The Cardinals will resume action on Friday, Feb. 8 when they host the Collegiate Classic which will begin at 4 pm.
