Eagles
The Eagles competed at Ohio Northern last Friday (Jan. 18). The AU men were first in a six-team field with 243.83 points. Ohio Northern (159.83) was the runnerup and Findlay (138.50) was third.Nate Logan (North Canton, OH/Hoover) was Ashland’s top scorer, he won the long jump and high jump, was second in the 300 meters and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4 X 400. Logan was AU’s top scorer with 30.5 points.Joe Horn (Waynesfield, OH/Waynesfield-Goshen) accounted for 20.5 points. He won the 200 and was second in the 55 meter dash and ran legs on both winning relays (4 X200 and 4 X 400).“After a four-week winter break it was good to get back on the track to see where everyone’s fitness level is leading into All-Ohio and GLIAC competition,” remarked AU head coach Jud Logan.

The Ferris State University men’s indoor track and field squad officially opened the 2008 season by taking part in the 20th annual Saginaw Valley State Collegiate Open Friday (Jan. 18) evening inside SVSU’s Ryder Center at University Center, Mich.The Bulldog men’s team had four individuals place among the top six overall in their respective events.Senior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) led the men’s team with a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters (8:54.18). Junior Brian Williams (Detroit) finished fifth in the 400 meters (52.48), junior Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) placed sixth in the mile (4:40.25) and freshman Matt Heinicke (Comstock Park) was sixth in the 200 meters (23.44).The Bulldogs will next compete in the Grand Valley State Bob Eubanks Open Friday, Jan. 25, beginning at 5 p.m. (EST) in Allendale, Mich.

The Oilers took third at Ohio Northern last weekend…Kendell Simon placed first in the 1000 meter run after racing his way to a school record breaking time of 2:29.84 while James Eric won the weight throw competition with a toss of 55’09.25 and Carleton McGrady finished first in the shot put with a heave of 52’07.50…Tom Brown finished second in the 800 meter run after crossing the finish line in 1:59.17 while Essex Berry added a second place finish in the 200 meter dash at 22.59.

Grand Valley State competed in the Mike Lints Laker Challenge this past week, and will now look forward to the Bob Eubanks Open this coming Friday.Grand Valley State University started 2008 strong, garnering seven first-place finishes at the Mike Lints Laker Challenge. Garron Lucius highlighted the team’s performance by provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet with a time of 7.67 in the 55-meter hurdles. He took first place in the event. The Lakers will stay in Allendale for their next meet, the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open next Friday at 4 p.m. Robert Metellus also provisionally qualified for the NCAAs, winning the triple jump with a distance of 14.42 meters. Other first-place finishers for Grand Valley State included Michael Palombo, who won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.90 seconds, and Todd Schuster, who crossed the line first in the mile at 4:22.89. Nate Peck’s bid to set the GVSU Fieldhouse record in the 3000-meter run came up just short. Peck won the event with a time of 8:17.30, but the previous record of 8:16.40 remains unbroken for now. Grand Valley’s “A” and “B” teams in the 1600-meter relay put on a good show, with the “A” team winning by one-tenth of a second, 3:27.66 to 3:27.76.In field events, Nate Miller took first in the high jump, clearing 2.02 meters.

In a meet that featured the likes of Notre Dame and Alabama, the Hillsdale College Men’s Track & Field team claimed two NCAA Provisional Qualifying performances on their way to a successful Friday night at the Notre Dame Indoor Opener.The first Provisional Qualifying performance came from junior high jumper Andrew Dodson. Dodson, a Nike All-American in high school, turned in arguably his best series of jumps as a Charger. Dodson cleared 6’ 8 ¾” - and nearly cleared 6’ 10 ¾” – on his way to a second-place finish. His effort currently ranks him fourth nationally.Dodson’s teammate, Jared Krout, also earned a Provisional Qualifier. Krout turned in a time of 48.55 seconds in the 400m Dash, which was good enough for a 2nd place finish in the closely-contested race. Krout’s mark is currently the 4th best time in the nation. Krout also claimed 3rd place in the 200m Dash.Other Top-8 performers for the Chargers included Jason Stomps (2nd, Weight), Alex Ralston (5th, Mile), Aaron Falk (5th, Weight), Nick Gurica (6th, 60m Dash), Justin Dailey (6th, Weight), Kurt Weil (7th, Weight) and Nate English (8th, Shot Put).The Chargers travel to conference foe Findlay next Friday and Saturday for the Findlay Classic.

The Northwood University track and field teams took part in the SVSU Indoor Open Friday night (January 18).No team scoring was taken at the event, which was held at the Ryder Center.The Northwood men turned a strong performance, particularly in the sprints. NU had the top five finishers in the 200 and five of the top seven finishers in the 60, including the top three performers. Darrin Tape (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg) won both events, clocking a 6.96 in the 60 and 22.53 in the 200. Will Fulton (Inkster, Mich.) was second in the 60 (7.0) and third in the 200 (22.96), while Justin Esch (Chelsea, Mich.) was second in the 200 (22.76) and fifth in the 60 (7.16). Kevin Lawson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) was third in the 60 (7.11) and fifth in the 200 (23.37).Other men’s highlights included Josh Jerome (Shepherd, Mich.) and Sam Watson (Rochester, Mich.) placing second and third in the mile at 4:33.06 and 4:33.38, respectively. Bill Smith (Comstock Park, Mich.) finished second in the 60, clocking an 8.40.
Northwood will have next week off. They return to action February 1-2 at the DII Challenge, which will also be hosted by Saginaw Valley.

Cardinals
The SVSU men’s track and field team returned to the track Friday for the 20th Indoor Collegiate Open held at the Ryder Center. The Cardinal men took home four first place finishes (including two meet records) and 13 top three finishes.The men did particularly well in the distance competitions, where Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich.) set a meet and Ryder Center record for his time of 4:11.45 in the 1500 Meter Run, while teammate Ben Richards (Goodrich, Mich.) finished right behind him in second place. Weddel also finished third in the 800 Meter Run.Not to be outdone, Adam Roach won the 5000 Meter Run with a meet record time of 14:51.64. Nick Krus (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) took second place in the 5000 Meters. Tony Filpek (Caro, Mich.) joined the group with a second place finish in the 800 Meter Run, while Eric LaCross (Cheboygan, Mich.) finished third in the 3000 Meter Run. In the shorter distances, Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.) took home first place in the 60 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8.33 seconds. Kyle McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) finished in third place in the event, and also took fourth place in the Pole Vault.The Cardinal men also placed well in the field events. Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) finished first in the Shot Put with a throw of 52 feet, while teammates Rob Calloway and Patrick Briggs (Swartz Creek, Mich.) took home second and third place finishes. Eltaro Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich.) rounded out the Cardinals’ field event finishers with second place in the High Jump. The Cardinals’ next track meet is the University of Findlay Open, which will be held on next weekend (Jan. 25-26) in Findlay, Ohio.
