Bulldogs
The Ferris State University men’s and women’s track and field teams officially open the 2008 indoor campaign by taking part in the Saginaw Valley State Open Friday, Jan. 18, starting at 5 p.m. (EST) in University Center, Mich. The Bulldogs will have seven indoor meets prior to the 2008 GLIAC Championships (Feb. 29-March 1) in Findlay, Ohio. This year’s NCAA-II National Indoor Track & Field Championships (March 14-15) will be held in Mankato, Minn. The FSU women’s squad has five seniors on its roster while the men’s team has nine seniors. This year’s men’s team includes former Bulldog basketball standout Terrance Shaw, who was an All-GLIAC Second Team selection twice for the Bulldogs. Head coach Jeff Kavalunas is currently in his 12th season at the Bulldog helm. Ferris also filled its assistant coaching position with the appointment of Vic Finch this past fall.

Oilers
The Oilers competed in two events last weekend at Ohio Northern and at Eastern Michigan…At Ohio Northern, Brant Finney led the way for the Oilers by taking first place finishes in both the shot put and weight throw. Finney won both events with marks of 13.96 meters…Essex Berry, Simon Bernard and Shawn Caruso also picked up first place finishes for Findlay at the event…Berry won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.87, Bernard captured first in the 500 meter dash at 1:08.29 while Caruso crossed the finish line at 2:04.86 to take gold in the 800 meter run…Berry also added a second place finish in the 55 meter dash at 6.64 while Bernard took second in the 300 meter dash with a time of 37.76…At Eastern Michigan, Carleton McGrady won the shot put with a school record breaking heave of 53’11.75 while James Eric took second in the weight throw at 56’03.25…Curtis Hoag added a third place finish in the shot put at 48’04.75 and a ninth place mark in the weight throw at 50’00.00 while Nate Kurtz placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 47’09.75 and 23rd in the weight throw at 38’00.75…Kendell Simon added a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:53.64.

Chargers
Led by a pair of All-Americans, the Hillsdale College Men’s Track & Field team enjoyed a solid showing at the Eastern Michigan University Open on Saturday. All-American Jared Krout earned a win for the Chargers in the 200m Dash, and nearly provisionally-qualified for NCAA’s, with a time of 22.36. Krout’s time is one of the Top-10 performances in NCAA Div. II this year. Jason Stomps, a 2007 Outdoor All-American, finished 3rd in the 35# Weight Throw with a mark of 56’ 2". Stomps currently ranks 8th in the Weight Throw in NCAA Div. II. In addition, Charger teammates Aaron Falk (6th) and Justin Dailey (7th) combined with Stomps to make the 35# Weight Throw a successful event for the Chargers. Other Top-8 finishers included the Distance Medley Relay (1st), Andrew Dodson (5th – HJ), Nate English (5th – SP), Timothy Howse (5th – 3000m Run), the 4x400m Relay team (7th), Derek Gilmore (7th – 3000m Run), Joel VanDerworp (8th – Mile) and Blake England (8th- 200m Dash). The Chargers travel to Notre Dame, IN next Friday for the Notre Dame Indoor Opener.

Northwood University
Timberwolves
The Northwood University track and field teams took part in the Chippewa Open Friday night (January 11). No team scores were taken at the event, which was the first for Northwood to feature the Timberwolves’ full team. Selected members of the teams took part in the Grand Valley Open last month. The Northwood men turned in some strong performances. Darrin Tape (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg) ran 6.99 in the 60 meter dash to place fourth, finishing only behind three Division I runners. Justin Esch (Chelsea, Mich.) placed third in the 200 at 22.93, while Monte Perkins (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lasher) finished second in both the High Jump (6-0) and the triple jump (42-4.25).NU is back in action January 18 at the Cardinal Open, which will be hosted by Saginaw Valley.

Saginaw Valley States men’s team turned out a strong performance. Most notably was Charlie Richards (Goodrich, Mich.) who placed first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.15 which was good enough to provisionally qualify him for Nationals. Other Notable runners were Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich.) who took second in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:27.17, Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.), who also placed second in the 60 meter hurdle with a time of 8.45, and also Mark Badowsky (Lincoln Park, Mich.), Erik Lunning (Fairview, Mich.), Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.), and Andy Filipek (Caro, Mich. (Kingston)) who make up the 4*400 meter relay team which posted a time of 3:35.53 that was good enough to get a first place finish. The Cardinals also did well in the field events with four first place finishers. Kyle McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) and Jake Morris (Wheeler, Mich. (Breckenridge)) finished first and second in the Pole Vault with identical jumps of 4.45 meters, Kyle McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) also took second in the High Jump with a jump of 1.98 meters. Sean Urban (Macomb, Mich. (Henry Ford II)) had two first place finishes on the night winning the Long Jump with a jump of 6.76 meters and winning the Triple jump with a jump of 12.49 meters. Also Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) had a first place finish in the Shot Put with a winning toss of 16.36 meters.
