The Ashland University men’s golf team took home a sixth-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional Tournament on Sunday and Monday (April 20-21), held at the University of Indianapolis. The field consisted of 19 teams and scores were totaled after 36 holes of play. Grand Valley State won the team title with a score of 578, with Wayne State finishing in second place, with 590. Indianapolis (592), Ferris State (595), and Northern Kentucky (598) rounded out the top five, as Ashland finished a stroke behind NKU at 599. Junior Danny Evans was Ashland’s top finisher, as he placed in a tie for eighth with a 148. Freshman John Furlong took home a top-20 finish, as he was tied for 17th with a 149. Senior Joe D’Andrea (a score of 152 for 37th place), senior Chris Robertson (153, 43rd), and sophomore Chris Bacon (156, 63rd) totaled Ashland’s next best scores.

Bulldogs
The Ferris State men’s golf team placed fourth overall with a two-round 595 team total at the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament III in Indianapolis, Ind., after the Bulldogs posted a 295 score in Monday’s (April 21) final-round competition. Ferris State (595, +19) was three strokes in back of third-place Indianapolis (592, +16) on the par 72, 7,100-yard Purgatory Golf Course. Grand Valley State won the tournament after producing a first-place two-over-par 578-stroke total among the 19 schools participating. Wayne State garnered runner-up laurels after turning in a 590 score (+14). Sophomore Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) led the way with a third-place 142 score (70-72=142) while sophomore Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) also finished among the top 10 with an eighth-place tying 148 score (77-71=148). Junior Kelbi Lee (Billings,Montana) carded a 152 (75-77=152) to claim a share of 37th place. Junior Derek Shelburne (Scotts/Vicksburg) fired a 43rd-place tying 153-stroke total (78-75=153) and redshirt freshman Joe Brown (St. Ignace/LaSalle) shot a 162 (81-81=162) to tie for 82nd place.

Oilers
The University of Findlay men’s golf team dropped to tenth on the second day of the third Great Lakes Regional Tournament of the season on Monday, April 21 at the Purgatory Golf Course in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Oilers who were third after the first day of the event after carding a 293, shot a 316 on the second and final day of action for a total score of 609. Grand Valley State University won the event with a 578 (282, 296). Joe McGeean led the Oilers by tying for eighth place with a 148 (68, 80) while Eric Atsma tied for 17th with a 149 (71, 78). Adam Craig (76, 79 – 155), Kyle Nickson (78, 79 – 157) and Kory Kotterman (82, 82 – 164) also competed for Findlay at the event.

Lakers
Grand Valley State took home top honors as a team with a 36-hole total of 578 (+2), while Josh Orler won medalist honors with a 141 (-3) by defeating Wayne State’s Joe Juszczyk in a two-hole playoff. The Lakers were 12 shots clear of second place Wayne State (590) and 14 shots ahead of Indianapolis’ 36-hole total of 592 (+16). The Great Lakes Regional #3 was played at The Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind. GVSU will now be the top seed in the NCAA DII Great Lakes Super Regional that will be held May 5-7 at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio.Orler led the way for the Lakers with a final 18 score of 74 (+2) and a 36-hole total of 141 (-3). Tyler Hering tied for fourth with a 143 (-1), while Josh Burt tied for 8th with a 36-hole total of 148. Mike Basinski shot a 150 and tied for 24th. Matt Johnson shot the low round of the day for the Lakers with an even par 72 and for 43rd with a 153.

Tyler Bidwell shot two over par on day two to finish tied for seventh place Sunday in the Ohio Northern Spring Invitational and led the Mercyhurst men’s golf team to a 12th place finish. Bidwell shot a 76 on day one and a 74 on day two. Mercyhurst was in 15th place after day one with a team score of 330. Lucas Murray of Mount Union College finished in first place individually by shooting a 73 on both days. Bidwell finished only four shots behind Murray. Over the two days for the Lakers, Kyle Waddell (T26) followed with a 156 and Ryan McNulty (70) added a 167. Steve Barr shot a 170 and Matt Mahoney finished with a 174. Owens Community College won the competition with combined team score of 590, followed by mount Union College at 603 and John Carroll University at 610. Mercyhurst will return to the links on Thursday in the Penn State Behrend Invitational.

Wildcats
The Northern Michigan University men’s golf team competed at the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional #3 Sunday and Monday (April 20-21). The Wildcats shot a two-day total of 653 (333-320). Luke Thode led the ‘Cats with a score of 155 (76-79) which tied him for 55th. Neil Passinault had a card of 164 (88-76) which placed him in a tie for 85th. Tom Sarasin tied for 91st with a two-day total of 167 (88-79). Robert Desimone was 93rd with a 169 (83-86) and teammate Ben Fulcher was next at 96th with a 181 (96-95).

Timberwolves
The Northwood University men's golf team finished ninth out of 19 teams at the NCAA Regional #3 Monday afternoon (April 21).
Northwood host team scores of 300 and 308 to finish at 608. Grand Valley State was the overall winner at 578, followed by Wayne State at 590.
The Timberwolves were led by senior Pat Swanton (Beaverton, Mich.), who tied for 24th with a six-over par total of 150 (74-76).

Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University golf team finished up the Great Lakes Regional Tournament #3 today with a 306, giving them a 606 total which was good for eighth in the tournament.Today the Cardinals were led again by Nate Kelly (Suttons Bay, Mich.) with a 74, and Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan, Mich.) matched him. Kelly’s 148 total (+4) tied him for eighth individually in the tournament, and Hocquard’s 150 (+6) tied him for 24th. Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) shot a 78 for a 151 total (+7) and Sean Rutherford’s (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) 80 rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals today. Ronnie Coriasso Jr. (Grand Blanc, Mich.) shot an 80 today as well. The Cardinals will now wait to see if they have qualified for the Great Lakes Super Regional which is to be held at the Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio, May 5th through 7th.

Warriors
The Wayne State golf team held on to its second-place position after the final round of the Great Lakes Regional at Purgatory Golf Course on Monday … the Warriors carded a team score of 300 to bring their combined total to 590, 12 strokes behind Grand Valley State … Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) shot a round-low 70 on Monday to move into a tie for the lead with GVSU’s Josh Orler … Juszczyk (71-70—141) and Orler (67-74—141), who were both three under par for the tournament, met in a playoff which was won by Orler on the second hole … Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich.) tied for eighth with a total score of 148 (71-77), while Brett Hudson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) shot 150 (73-77) to tie for 24th … Eric Johnson (Marquette, Mich.) was just a stroke behind Hudson in a tie for 31st (75-76—151), and Michael Wouters (Sterling Hts., Mich.) bested his first-round score by seven strokes to move into a tie for 78th (84-77—161) … Wayne State, which was tabbed fourth in the most recent NCAA regional rankings April 11, will close out its spring schedule next Monday against Oakland Community College while awaiting the announcement of the NCAA Super Regional selection.
