Eagles
Ashland was in action twice last weekend. On Saturday (Apr. 12), the Eagles finished in a tie for fifth at the Findlay-Outback Steakhouse Invitational. Senior Chris Robertson (Rittman, OH) led the Eagles, he finished in a tie for eighth place…on Sunday and Monday (Apr. 13-14) the Eagles hosted the Ashland University Invitational at the Country Club of Ashland. The Eagles placed fifth in a nine-team field. Grand Valley State (595) won the team title and Ferris State (602) was second. Wayne State (608) placed third. Robertson was the medalist. The AU senior and Findlay’s Eric Atsma finished regulation play in a tie. Robertson birdied the first playoff hole to take the top honor. That is the second time in his career he has won a tournament.

The FSU men’s golf team earned a pair of runner-up finishes in two events over the weekend - the Findlay Outback Steakhouse Invitational (April 11-12) and the Ashland Invitational (April 13-14). FSU carded a 602 team score in the Ashland Invite after posting a 604 in the Findlay event. Bulldog sophomore Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) was the tournament’s individual medalist at the Findlay Outback Steakhouse Invitational as he shot a 74 on Friday followed by a tournament-best 70 Saturday to finish with an even-par 144 overall for the event. He finished two shots ahead of WSU’s Ryan Johnson (146). Fellow sophomore Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) placed tied for 11th (+8) in the Findlay field with a 152 after carding a 76 in both rounds of the competition. In the Ashland Invitational, FSU shot a opening-round score of 298 followed by a 304 in the final round of the nine-team event. The Bulldogs held the first round lead before Grand Valley State came back to fire the tourney’s low round of 293 over the final 18 holes of action. Valley finished in a tie for fifth overall as Ashland with a 148 (71-77=148, +4) to lead the Bulldogs. Lilleboe and junior Kelbi Lee (Billings, Montana) both placed tied for seventh in the field as both totaled a 150 (+6) score. Lilleboe shot rounds of 76 and 74 while Lee carded a 74 followed by a 76. Ferris State next takes part in the NCAA D-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament #3 on April 19-20 in Noblesville, Ind.

The University of Findlay men’s golf team wrapped up the Ashland University Invitational on Monday, April 14 at the Country Club of Ashland in Ashland, Ohio with a fourth place finish. The Oilers shot a 307 on the first day and then came back with a 304 on the second day to end the tournament with a 611... Eric Atsma led the way by finishing second with a two-round score of 145 (73, 72). His score was the top mark in the tournament but he lost to Ashland’s Chris Robertson in a playoff thus giving him the silver for the event... Kory Kotterman and Kyle Nickson tied for 13th at the event while Adam Craig registered a top 20 finish by taking 18th... Kotterman shot a 77 in the first round and then came back with a 75 in the second for a total of 152 while Nickson carded a 78 in the first and a 74 in the second for his 152. Craig meanwhile shot a 75 in the opening round and then fired a 79 in the second for his 154... Joe McGeaan (83, 72 – 155), Matt Jones (82, 77 – 159), Brady Marinangeli (77, 85 – 162), Kyle Brossia (82, 81 – 163) and Jeff Mocini (84, 83 – 167) also competed for Findlay during the event... The Oilers will be back in action again on April 20-21 at the Purgatory Golf Course in Indianapolis, Indiana for the third NCAA Regional of the year.

Golden Knights
The Gannon men’s golf team opened its spring season last weekend with an eight-place finish out of 12 teams at the Findlay-Outback Steakhouse Invitational. Gannon was tied for ninth after posting a 322 during the first round, but finished eighth after a 317 during the final round. The Golden Knights had a two-day score of 639. Pat Kloecker (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Drew Deimel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) were Gannon’s top golfers, tying for 25th place with identical scores of 156. Kloecker produced rounds of 75 and 81 while Deimel posted scores of 81 and 75. Rob Hersch (T61st, 85-79-164), Bobby Scalise (T65th, 82-83-165), and Matt Barnes (T70th, 84-82-166) completed Gannon’s five-member team. Gannon withdrew from the Ashland Invitational scheduled for Sunday, April 13 and Monday, April 14. The Golden Knights return to action Thursday, April 24 at the Penn State Behrend Invitational.

GVSU shot a second-round score of 293 and went on to claim top honors at the Ashland Invitational with a 36-hole team score of 595 (+19). The Lakers’ 293 second-round score was the low team score of the tournament. GVSU erased a four-shot defecit to Ferris State after day one to claim a seven-shot victory. The Lakers will next be in action April 19 & 20 at the third and final Great Lakes Regional. GVSU is currently ranked #1 in the latest NCAA DII Great Lakes Regional rankings... Senior Josh Orler shot the low second-round score (71) and finished third oveall with a 36-hole total of 147. Junior Tyler Hering carded a 72 on day two and finished tied for fifth overall with a 148. Freshman Mike Basinski finished tied for 10th with a two-day total of 151, while sophomore Matt Malloure finished tied for 15th with a 153. Sophomore Josh Burt finished tied for 18th wit a 154. Junior Matt Johnson finished tied for seventh playing as an individual with a 150.

The Northern Michigan University men’s golf team took an Ohio swing this past weekend. The Wildcats were at the University of Findlay-Outback Steakhouse Invite on Saturday (April 12) and at the Ashland University Invitation on Sunday and Monday (April 13-14)...At the Findlay event the ‘Cats shot a two-round total of 649 (329-320) for 11th. Wayne State was the top team with a card of 600 (300-300) with the Bulldogs of Ferris State second with a 604 (304-300)... The ‘Cats shot a 646 (333-313) at Ashland which was good for eighth. Grand Valley State was the first place team on the board with a 395 (302-293) as Ferris State was second with a 602 (298-304)... The ‘Cats will conclude the 2007-08 season at the NCAA II Regional Tournament in Noblesville, Ind., Saturday and Sunday (April 19-20).

The SVSU golf team traveled to Findlay, Ohio, this weekend to participate in the Outback Invitational, and used an impressive second day to take home a fifth place finish in the tournament... Day one saw a rather disappointing score for the Cardinals, as they shot a 315 as a team, led by senior Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and his 76. Senior Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) shot a 77, junior Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan, Mich.) had a 78, and sophomore Dieter Schulz (Port Huron, Mich./Northern) rounded out the team scoring for the Cardinals with a 79... On day two, Saginaw Valley rallied and put together the best scoring round of the tournament, shooting a 298 to bump them up to fifth for the tournament with a 613 total. Rutherford led the way on day two, shooting a par-score of 72 (149 total), and Hocquard also shot a 72 for a 150 total... SVSU traveled to Ashland, Ohio, on Sunday and Monday and returned back to campus with a seventh place finish in the Ashland University Invitational, with a two-round total of 619... Sophomore Ronnie Coriasso (Grand Blanc, Mich.) (79, 75) and senior Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) (78, 76) led the way for the Cardinals, both shooting 154 for the tournament and tying for 18th place in the event.

The Wayne State men’s golf team finished in first place with a four-stroke lead at the Outback Steakhouse Invitational, hosted by the University of Findlay at Sycamore Springs Golf Course … the Warriors matched their first round score of 300 on Saturday to top the 12-team field … Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich.) and Brett Hudson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) placed second and third with respective scores of 146 and 147 … the pair combined for three eagles, two of which belonged to Johnson… Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) carded a 152 to tie for 11th … Michael Wouters (Sterling Hts., Mich.), who led WSU with 25 pars, and Eric Johnson (Marquette, Mich.) each shot 156 to tie for 24th … Wayne State went on to finish third at the Ashland Invitational, which concluded Monday afternoon at the Country Club of Ashland … after posting a team score of 305 in Sunday’s opening round, the Warriors shot 303 on Monday for a combined score of 608 … Juszczyk shot a three-over par 147 (73-74) to finish in fourth place, two strokes off the lead … Hudson carded a 151 (77-74) to tie for 10th … others factoring into the scoring were Eric Johnson, who tied for 18th (78-76—154); Ryan Johnson, who tied for 35th (77-80—157); and Wouters, who finished in a tie for 42nd (80-79—159) … Wayne State will play in the third and final Great Lakes Regional of the season beginning Sunday, held at Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind.
