The Ashland University men’s golf team finished in a tie for second Tuesday at the 2007 GLIAC championships, hosted by the University of Findlay at the Findlay Country Club.The Eagles led in the team standings after the first day, enjoying an eight-stroke advantage over Ferris State and Northwood, which ended the first day tied for second. The Eagles had a team score of 300 on the final day. Ashland’s Danny Evans finished in a five-way tie for second place. He shot 218, +2. AU’s Joe D’Andrea finished in a tie for seventh (219, +3) and Chris Robertson ended the tournament tied for 14th (224, +8).

Bulldogs
Ferris State shot a final-round 292 score to finish with a second-place tying 880 score (+16) at the 2007 GLIAC Championships (Oct. 8-9) in Findlay, Ohio. The Bulldogs tied Ashland for tournament runner-up honors and were just a stroke behind tourney champion Findlay (289, +15) in the 10-team field at the Findlay Country Club. The Bulldogs’ second-place tying conference tourney showing represented the program’s highest since the 2005-06 season when FSU carded a second-place 903 team score in the 54-hole event. Ferris finished fifth at the 2006 GLIAC Championships with a three-round 897-stroke total. Sophomore Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) was the Bulldogs’ top golfer as he registered a 218 score (74-73-71=218, +2) to tie for second place with four others. Sophomore Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) along with senior Matt Erickson (DePere, Wis.) both placed in a three-way tie for third by carding 222 scores (+6). Lilleboe turned in rounds of 73,75, and 74 while Erickson recorded 77, 70, and 75 rounds, respectively.Eric Lilleboe finished the fall season with a team-best 73.73 stroke average (1,106 total strokes) in 15 rounds while Kurt Valley was second at 75.00 (1,125 total strokes) in 15 rounds and Matt Erickson ‘s 75.60 average (1,134 total strokes) ranks third among the 2007-08 team leaders.

Oilers
The University of Findlay men’s golf team came from behind in round three to capture their first ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the Findlay Country Club. The Oilers, who were sitting in fifth place, ten shots back of Ashland University after the second round, came through with a 289 in the third to win by one stroke on the final day. As a team, the Oilers posted a three day score of 879 (298, 292, 289), narrowly defeating Ferris State University (296, 292, 292 - 880), Ashland University (288, 292, 300 – 880) and Grand Valley State University (302, 292, 289 – 883). Their total of 889 was their lowest score ever at the tournament and the lowest mark in the history of the school for a 54-hole event. Individually, the Oilers were led by senior Eric Atsma and freshman Kyle Nickson who tied for second at the event with a 218, one stroke off the school record for a 54-hole tournament. Atsma shot a 74 in the first round, came back with a 73 in the second and then finished with a one under par 71 in the third and crucial round. Nickson meanwhile fired an even par 72 in the first round, a one under 71 in the second and a 75 in the third. Not far behind Atsma and Nickson was freshman Joe McGeean, who finished tied for seventh with a 219. McGeean shot a 75 in the opening round, came back with a 73 in the second and wrapped the tournament up with a one under 71 in the final round of play. Senior Adam Craig and junior Kory Kotterman also had great third rounds for the Oilers as Craig shot a 73 while Kotterman carded a 74. Craig ended the tournament in a tie for 17th with a 225 (77, 75, 73) while Kotterman tied for 37th with a 232 (80, 78, 74).

Golden Knights
The Gannon men’s golf team finished eighth out of 10 teams last Tuesday at the 2007 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship hosted by the University of Findlay at the Findlay Country Club. Gannon finished eighth with a three-round score of 919. The Golden Knights were tied for eighth after the first two rounds, posting a pair of 306’s during the first day. The squad completed the championships with a 307 during Tuesday’s final round. Drew Deimel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was Gannon’s top golfer, tying for 22nd place with a three-round total of 227. The true freshman shot rounds of 76, 77, and 74. Bobby Scalise (T29th, 74-77—77-228), Matt Barnes (T33rd, 77-76—76-229), Pat Kloecker (T42nd, 79-81-81-241), and Dan Hebert (T42nd, 85-76-80-241) completed Gannon’s five-member team. Gannon returns to action October 14-15 at the Mercyhurst Invitational hosted by Lake View Country Club.

Grand Valley State finished in fourth place at the 2007 GLIAC Championships at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio...The Lakers tallied a three round score of 883, just four strokes behind Findlay, who won the tournament with an 879...Grand Valley was the defending GLIAC Champions as they won the invite last year by 10 strokes over Gannon...The Lakers were in sixth place after recording a 594 in the first two rounds on Monday...GVSU trailed the leader, Ashland, by 14 strokes after the first day...Grand Valley came back and fired a 289 in the final round on Tuesday to finish in fourth place...Matt Malloure claimed the individual title as he shot a one over par, 217 in the three round tournament...Malloure recorded a three over par 75 in the first round, a two under par 70 in the second round, and finished with an even par 72 in the third round...Malloure marks the second straight Laker to claim the GLIAC individual title as senior Steve Larson won it a year ago...Senior Josh Orler tied for second place overall, firing a two over par, 218...He shot a two over par 74 in the first two rounds and concluded the tournament with a two under par 70 on Tuesday...Sophomore Josh Burt recorded a three round score of 223 to tie for 12th place...Burt had a 75 and 76 on the first day and posted an even par 72 in the final round...Junior Tyler Hering shot a 225 to tie him for 17th place...Senior Mark Pawlowski shot a 242...The GLIAC Championships conclude the fall season for the Lakers and they will resume play in the spring.

After three days of competition at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golf Championships at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio, the Mercyhurst men’s golf team finished in a tie for ninth with Tyler Bidwell’s 22nd-place finish leading the way. Steve Barr placed 41st for the Lakers after shooting 24-over-par. Finishing behind Bidwell for the Lakers was Patrick Johnson and Kyle Waddell, who each finished the championships at 26-over and in a tie for 44th. Ryan McNulty rounded out the Lakers’ top five at 37-over and in 48th place. Mercyhurst returns to Erie to host the Mercyhurst Invitational at Lakeview Country Club on Oct. 14-15.

The Northern Michigan men’s golf team finished ninth at the GLIAC Championships on Tuesday, Oct. 9. NMU finished with a team score of 943 (307, 312, 324). Wildcat Tony Bilich tied for 29th place with a score of 228. Northern Michigan has now finished their fall season and resume play in the spring.

The Northwood University men’s golf team tied for fifth at the GLIAC Championships Tuesday afternoon Oct. 9. Northwood finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a team score of 892 (294-294-304). The Timberwolves were led by Scott Jaschuk (Milford, Mich./Oakland C.C.). He tied for ninth overall with a six-over par total of 222 (74-72-76). Luigi Spadafora (Milford, Mich.) tied for 14th at 224 (76-71-77). Northwood has now completed the fall portion of their schedule.

The Cardinals wrapped their season up at the 2007 GLIAC Men’s Golf Championship over the past two days (Oct. 8-9) where they competed in the ten team tournament. The Championships were hosted by the University of Findlay at the Findlay Country Club. The Cards’ placed seventh overall at the competition with a three round team score of 898. Senior Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) had a solid tournament with a seven-over for a total of 223 which tied for 12th overall. The trio of Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett), Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan, Mich.) and Ronnie Coriasso, Jr. (Grand Blanc, Mich.) all tied for 22nd overall with an eleven-over for a total of 227. Freshman Nolan Hohensee (Hemlock, Mich.) finished with a three day total of 232 tied for 37th place.

Wayne State tied for fifth overall at the GLIAC Championship with a three-round total of 892 (295-294-303) … WSU’s top finisher was Brett Hudson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary’s), whose score of 224 (72-79-73) put him in a tie for 14th … Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich./Huron), last year’s runner-up, tied for 17th (75-73-77—225) … Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) shot an even-par 72 in Tuesday’s round and placed 21st (77-77-72—226) … Wayne State will wrap up its fall schedule in Erie, Pa., playing in the Mercyhurst Invitational on Saturday and Sunday and the Gannon Invitational on Monday.
