Eagles
For the first time in school history, AU has won a NCAA Regional Tournament. The Eagles won the first NCAA Division II Regional Tournament of the year, hosted by Grand Valley State last Sunday and Monday. AU shot 574 to edge Grand Valley State by a stroke for the team title. Freshman John Furlong (Medina, OH) was the medalist. He shot 65 on the final day and ended the event at 138 to win by two strokes. Senior Joe D’Andrea (Westerville, OH/St. Francis DeSales) finished in a tie for 11th and senior Chris Robertson (Rittman, OH) and junior Danny Evans (Malvern, OH) finished in a tie for 23rd.

Bulldogs
The Ferris State men’s golf team fired a 293 in Monday’s (Sept. 24) final round of the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament I to move up to eighth place overall in the two-day event. The action took place at the HawksHead Golf Club course in South Haven, Mich... Individually for the Bulldogs, sophomore Eric Lilleboe tied for fourth place overall with a 142 after shooting a 69 on Monday. He had fired a team-best 73 score on Sunday... Sophomore Kurt Valley’s 76 score Sunday and 72 Monday was good for a tie for 23rd place at 148 overall... The Bulldogs will next take part in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28-29, in Bay City, Mich.

Oilers
The University of Findlay men’s golf team finished the first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional of the year in fourth place after firing a two-day score of 582. The Oilers, who were in first place after the first day of the event with a 288, shot a 294 on the final day to fall behind Ashland University (574), Grand Valley State University (575) and the University of Indianapolis (578)... Individually, Joe McGeean led the Oilers by shooting a one under par 143 (72, 71). McGeean’s hot swing enabled him to tie for eighth at the event... Eric Atsma and Kory Kotterman also had solid outings, shooting a 146 and 147 respectively. Atsma fired a 74 in the first round and followed with a 72 while Kotterman went 74, 73 in the two round tournament... Adam Craig (72, 78 – 150) and Kyle Nickson (70, 82 = 152), who was tied for the lead after the opening round, also competed for the Oilers.

Golden Knights
The Gannon men’s golf team improved three spots during the final round and finished 21st out of 24 teams at the Great Lakes Regional Qualifier September 23-24. Gannon ended the first round in 24th place after a 324 on Sunday, but the Golden Knights improved 32 strokes and jumped three spots with a 292 during Monday’s final round. The squad finished the two-round event with a 616. Drew Deimel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was Gannon’s top golfer, tying for 30th place with a two-day total of 149. The true freshman fired a 71 on Monday after shooting a 78 during Sunday’s first round. Bobby Scalise (T82nd, 82-73-155), Pat Kloecker (T89th, 81-75-156), Matt Barnes (T96th, 85-73-158), and Rob Hersch (T108th, 83-80-163) also competed for the Golden Knights. Gannon returns to action September 30-October 1 at the Wayne State Invitational.

Grand Valley State compiled a two day score of 575 to place second in the Great Lakes Fall Regional held in South Haven, Mich…The Lakers finished one under par and one stroke behind Ashland (574)…GVSU fired a 293 on Sunday and posted an outstanding 282 on Monday…The Lakers were tied for third going into the final round, but couldn’t overcome Ashland’s 279 in the second round…Junior Tyler Hering tied for second place overall as he recorded a 140 in the tournament…Hering posted a 70 on both days, which was two under par…Sophomore Matt Malloure tied for eighth place after recording a 143..He had a 74 on Sunday and then fired a three under par 69 on Monday…Senior Josh Orler tallied a 145, which tied him for 11th place overall as he shot a 75 in the first round and a 70 in the second round…Sophomore Josh Burt tied for 21st place as he recorded a 147 (74, 73) and freshman Mike Basinski added a 159 (78, 81), tying for 98th place…GVSU will next travel to Saginaw Valley St. for a two day invitational on Friday and Saturday and then to Wayne State for a one day tournament on Sunday.

The Mercyhurst men’s golf team competed in the Great Lakes Fall Regional on 9/23 and 9/24. After day two, the Lakers finished in 23rd place out of 24 teams. Mercyhurst was led by senior Kyle Waddell with a 80(+8) on day one and 72 (+0) on day two. He tied for 55th out of 114 players. Following Waddell for Mercyhurst was junior Tyler Bidwell at 64th, and senior Steven Barr and freshman Patrick Jackson tied for 106th. The Lakers will return to the course on September 25th in the Allegheny Invitational.

Timberwolves
The Northwood University men’s golf team finished 15th at the Great Lakes Fall Regional Monday afternoon (Sept. 24)... The Timberwolves shot team scores of 306 and 302 to finish at 608. Ashland was the overall winner at 574, followed by Grand Valley at 575 and Indianapolis at 578... Luigi Spadafora (Milford, Mich.) and Aaron Warring (Highland, Mich./Milford) shared team medalist honors. Both players finished at 151 to tie for 51st overall... Northwood will compete at the Wayne State Invitational Friday and Saturday (Sept. 28-29).

The men’s golf team tackled the challenging Hawkshead Golf Course and a field of 24 teams at the Great Lakes Fall Regional on Sunday and Monday. Saginaw Valley State placed sixth among those aforementioned 24 schools with a two-day total of 587 strokes. The Cardinals were tied for third after day one with a score of 293. Senior Sean Rutherford (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett) continues to play outstanding golf firing a one-under par 71 on day one. The team as a whole was very solid as the rest of the pack scored a 74...Sophomore Ronnie Coriasso, Jr. (Grand Blanc, Mich.) saved his best round for day two firing a one-under par 71 and finishing the tournament tied for 11th place with a total of 145. Rutherford carded a two-over par 74 on day two and tied Coriasso, Jr. with a total of 145... Junior Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan, Mich.) shot identical two-over par 74’s in the two rounds and tied for 23rd overall with a 148. Senior Mike King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) was one stroke back of Hocquard with a total of 149. Sophomore Mike Horn (Clarkston, Mich.) shot a 150 which tied for 38th. The Cardinals will host the SVSU Intercollegiate this week on Friday and Saturday at the Bay City Country Club.

Wayne State finished in fifth place at the first Great Lakes Regional event of the season at HawksHead Golf Course in South Haven … the Warriors posted team scores of 293 both Sunday and Monday for a total of 586, 12 strokes behind event winner Ashland … WSU improved its performance by four positions over last year, as the Warriors finished ninth in 2006 … redshirt senior Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich./Huron) totaled eight birdies and shot 140, including a second-round 68, to tie for second … he leads the team with a 73.40 scoring average this season … redshirt freshman Bryan Lynch (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) turned in a 145 (73-72) to tie for 11th … Wayne State’s next competition will be the Bay Valley Intercollegiate this Friday and Saturday.
