Senior QB John Ferguson (Reynoldsburg, OH/Akron) made his first start of the year at Ferris State. Ferguson replaced an injured Billy Cundiff (Uniontown, OH/Connecticut) and completed 18-of-28 passes for 279 yards and a pair of TD passes. Ferguson started 10 games a year ago…sophomore RB Dawon Harvey (Columbus, OH/Central State) piled up 259 all-purpose yards against Ferris State. Harvey had 135 yards on four kickoff returns, rushed 20 times for 97 yards and caught two passes for 27 yards…AU saw its streak of 40-point efforts end at three Saturday. No AU team has ever scored 40 or more points in four consecutive games…senior RB Jon Schroeder (Avon Lake, OH) scored three touchdowns at FSU and has 14 for the season. The school record for touchdowns in a season is 17, set by Ray Novotny in 1929…the Eagles entered last Saturday’s game as the GLIAC’s best team on fourth down. At FSU, Ashland converted 3-of-4 fourth down tries. For the season, Ashland has converted 11-of-16 fourth down attempts (69 percent)…senior wide receiver David Ziegelhofer (Lexington, OH) has moved into third place in career receptions (118) at AU. Ziegelhofer caught five passes at Ferris State and his TD grab with 13:18 remaining in regulation put the Eagles ahead to stay…AU is 5-1 in GLIAC play for the first time since 1998. The 1998 team got off to a 6-1 start in conference action.

The Ferris State Bulldogs held a five-point lead after three quarters, but it wasn’t enough as the Ashland Eagles scored the only touchdown of the fourth quarter en route to a thrilling 37-35 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory to spoil FSU’s annual Homecoming contest Saturday (Oct. 20) afternoon at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich... FSU dropped to 32-33-2 (.493) all-time in its annual homecoming encounter with the setback. The Bulldogs had won 13 of their previous 17 homecoming contests prior to the loss... Senior quarterback C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa) completed 15-of-17 passing attempts in the game and accounted for four Bulldog touchdowns. He threw for three scores and added a rushing TD... Junior defensive tackle Jake Visser (Coopersville) had a game-high 12 tackles, including seven solo stops, in the loss to Ashland. He also added 1.5 TFL, one quarterback sack and a quarterback hurry. Visser also notched his 250th career tackle versus Ashland.

The Oilers evened their record at 4-4 with a 40-14 win over Gannon on Saturday…As a team, the Oilers churned out 24 first downs compared to only eight for the Golden Knights and racked up 465 yards of total offense…Individually, red-shirt sophomore quarterback Jonathan Bell threw for a career-high 176 yards and two scores on 12-of-20 passing and also added 102 yards rushing on 18 carries to lead the Oilers offense…Senior running back Joel McDaniel added 116 yards on 27 carries while freshman wide receiver Dustin Zielaskiewicz recorded 81 yards on three catches, two of them for scores…Bell’s passing touchdowns were the first of his career…Zielaskiewicz’s scores were also the first of his career…Sophomore running back Elijah Griffin also found the end zone twice, the first two scores of the season for the back… Defensively, senior linebacker Dion Harvey had 13 tackles including four for a loss to go along with one sack…Senior defensive back Caleb Meyer added five tackles and a pair of interceptions in the Oilers victory… Harvey leads the team with 68 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks…The win gives the Oilers a two-game winning streak, the first time this season that they have been able to claim a victory on back-to-back Saturday’s.

Golden Knights

Gannon dropped to 0-8 with a 40-14 loss to Findlay in week seven … the Golden Knights scored a touchdown on their first possession for the first time this season, grabbing a 7-0 lead in the process … Jon Richardson (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) rushed for a career-high 146 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries … Richardson entered the game with 219 yards and two touchdowns through seven games, before exploding against Findlay … Alton Kenner (Buffalo, N.Y./Turner-Carroll) led all players on both teams with a career-high 16 tackles … Kenner was consistent throughout the game with five tackles in the second quarter, four in the third, and four in the fourth … Evan Euler (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) recorded a school-record 80-yard punt in the fourth quarter, shattering the old record by 13 yards … Euler’s punt traveled 60 yards in the air, before bouncing 20 yards into the endzone.

Sophomore quarterback Brad Iciek completed 17-of-24 passes for 403 yards and four TDs at Northwood. Iciek tied career-highs with his 403 passing yards and four TDs. Iciek also became just the second Grand Valley State quarterback to throw for more than 400 yards twice in a single-season... WR/RB Blake Smolen recorded 206 all-purpose yards at Northwood. Smolen rushed for 50 yards and a TD on six carries, caught three passes for 74 yards and returned two kickoffs for 82 yards. Smolen averaged 18.7 yards per touch... Sophomore defensive lineman Dan Skuta tallied eight total tackles, two quarterback sacks (-16) and two tackles for loss at Northwood... Senior WR Atnione Trent has 15 receptions this season, seven of which have gone for TDs... Grand Valley State has won a school-record 35 straight games overall, setting the NCAA DII all-time mark for consecutive wins. The Lakers’ current winning streak is the longest active streak in college football. GVSU’s last loss was Nov. 27, 2004 at North Dakota in the NCAA Northwest Regional final. The Lakers’ last regular season loss was 10/23/04 to Northwood (35-14).

Saturday’s wild 42-33 Hillsdale win over Mercyhurst held significance for the Chargers in many ways, in this season and historically…The Chargers have scored 30 or more points in nine straight games, dating back to the 2006 season finale at Saginaw Valley…The win was Hillsdale’s sixth of the season, clinching a winning season for the Chargers for the first time since 1999…The win also snapped a two-game road losing streak for the Chargers…Senior quarterback Mark Nicolet had his six game streak of 300 or more passing yards snapped…Nicolet did throw his 24th touchdown pass of the season, tying him for second place on Hillsdale’s single-season touchdown pass list with Kyle Keefer’s 1999 mark…Junior wide receiver Aaron Waldie caught his 12th touchdown pass of the season, tying him for first place on Hillsdale’s single-season touchdown reception list…He now shares the record with Dave Mifsud, who set the record in 1985…Tom Korte had two interceptions in the game, giving him a team-high four for the season…Hillsdale has scored 40 or more points in three straight meetings with Mercyhurst, and has scored at least 40 in four games this season…The Chargers’ four road games have had final scoring margins of one, three, four and nine points, with the team going 2-2 in those games…Hillsdale has allowed at least 34 points in all four road games this season…Hillsdale is now 7-3 all-time against Mercyhurst.

The Greyhounds posted a season-high five turnovers in taking a 34-28 loss to Wayne State on Saturday… UIndy was also penalized a season-high eight times for 84 yards … The Hounds were held to just 126 yards on the ground (a season low) in the loss … David Link posted his third 100-yard rushing effort of the season, running for 106 yards on 20 carries … Linebacker Josh Kimbowa racked-up five pass break-ups on the game … Casey Gillin notched his fourth career 300-yard passing game, completing 21-of-39 for 315 yards and a score … He was picked-off three times, however, for the second time this season (both UIndy losses) … After not forcing a fumble in the first five games combined, UIndy has forced three in the past two games, running one in for a score (20-yard TD by Alex Byrnes) … The Greyhound defense held WSU’s Trent Pohl to just nine completions (of 25).

Junior running back Richard Stokes had 150 yards rushing and two touchdowns as the Lakers lost to Hillsdale 42-33 Saturday. It was Stokes’ fourth game this year with at least 150 yards on the ground and gives him 952 yards on the year, the second highest single-season total in program history. With 2,195 career rushing yards, he also needs just 120 yards to become the school’s all-time leader…Theo Hall averaged 30.0 yards on four kick returns, including two that went for more than 40 yards…QB Mitch Phillis threw three touchdowns, giving him 50 for his career … Linebacker Tim Herbener had 17 tackles, 10 solo, and a forced fumble. He also added 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sack…Mercyhurst picked off Hillsdale quarterback Mark Nicolet three times. He had thrown just two interceptions prior to the contest.

Despite last Saturday’s (Oct. 20) loss, Michigan Tech is 5-2 in its last seven meetings vs. Northern Michigan … The Wildcats earned just their second win in six Miner’s Cup games all-time. Tech won four of the first five affairs … True freshman Phil Milbrath (Norway, Mich.) tallied the second 100-yard rushing game of his career with 128 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries at Northern Michigan. Milbrath turned in 86 of those 128 yards in the fourth quarter as Tech nearly overcame a 20-point deficit. Milbrath’s other 100-yard game came at Wayne State on Sept. 1 (118 yards) … Quarterback Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) improved his total offense total for the season to 2,213 yards with 318 at Northern Michigan last Saturday (Oct. 20). The 6-0 sophomore passed for 271 yards and rushed for 47 more in the contest. Short owns 1,846 passing yards for the season and is within reach of breaking the school season records for total offense (2,703) and passing (2,163).

The Miner’s Cup is back in Marquette with the 34-27 win over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday thanks to a defensive stand at the end of the game…It is only the second time in the history of the Miner’s Cup the ‘Cats have won it, the last time was in 2003…NMU will host Mercyhurst on Saturday for the home finale for 2007…Buddy Rivera had 229 yards passing with three touchdowns for 229 yards and rushed for 26 yards on 10 carries and in the process set new NMU career records for total offense (7,038 yards) and touchdown passes (47)…Anthony Leandri leads the ‘Cats with 42 points as he is perfect in extra points 21-21 and is 7-10 in field goals, he connected from 49 yards out against MTU at the end of the first half for a career-long…The past three games NMU has had under 400 yards of total offense, but are 2-1 in those games…The Wildcats had three interceptions against MTU for a season high…Three receivers have 12 of the 14 touchdown catches on the season, Fred Wells (4), Zach Nichols (5) and Dan Elmore (3)…Nicholas Bloch led the defensive effort against the Huskies with 11 total tackles (four solo and seven assisted) and forced a fumble, he leads the team with 69 total tackles (39 solo and 30 assisted), 6.5 tackles-for-loss (-29 yards) and 3.5 sacks (-22 yards).

Northwood fell to 3-4 on the season with a 51-20 loss to No. 1 Grand Valley ... the Timberwolves hung around for much of the game, with the score beign 17-13 and 30-20, but the Lakers scored the final 21 points of the game to earn the victory ... the Timberwolves finished with 416 yards of offense for the game, including 294 yards on the ground ... senior Antoine Ivy (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) had 100 yards rushing on the game on just four carries ... his first two carries of the game went for 38 and 55 yards, respectively ... for the season, Ivy is averaging 12.7 yards per carry, having gained 406 yards on 32 carries ... senior LB Asa Jenkins (Saginaw, Mich.) led the defensive effort with 13 tackles.

Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) accounted for all five WSU touchdowns with a school-record tying four rushing touchdowns (third time this season) along with a 68-yard TD completion to Travis Campbell (Gahanna, Ohio/Westerville North) … Bell’s game-winning 90-yard touchdown run marked WSU’s fifth scoring drive of the season of at least 90 yards … the run also tied the WSU mark for longest touchdown run set by A.J. Vaughn on Sept. 30, 1967, against Wisconsin-Milwaukee … Bell’s third TD run (he had one in each quarter) was set up by Bruno Shkreli’s (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) 77-yard kickoff return to the Indy two … it was the fourth longest non-scoring kickoff return in school history … place-kicker David Chudzinski (Belleville, Mich.) tied the school mark for career PAT attempts (78) set by Matt Fishburn (1994-97), while eclipsing Fishburn’s mark for career PAT made (71) … WSU has won its last three games at Indy and the road team has won the last seven in the Warrior-Greyhound series … Bell currently leads the GLIAC in rushing (145.0 yards per game), all-purpose yards (179.9), rushing attempts (219) and scoring (15.8 points per game), is 10th in total offense (153.5) and eighth in total plays (221) … with his two interceptions at Indianapolis, sophomore Brandon Cooper (Detroit, Mich./St. Martin de Porres) moved into a tie for second in the conference with four picks.
